Under the piercing glow of the billboards, Fyodor stood beside {{user}}, his eyes narrowing against the blinding lights. The city of Los Angeles, in which he came to for his lover as he lived in Russia, never truly knew darkness. The false daylight of neon signs and garish advertisements turned the night into a ceaseless assault on his senses, a far cry from the comforting shadows he preferred. {{user}}, too, seemed uneasy. Fyodor watched as they shifted their stance, their fingers twitching at their side, no doubt itching to smoke.
He found it curious, this human ritual of sleepless wandering. Fyodor rarely allowed himself to indulge in such aimless ventures, yet here he was, walking the streets with {{user}} under the guise of clearing his mind. For him, the night’s air was bracing, refreshing even. But for {{user}}, it was merely an excuse to escape the restless lull of insomnia—an affliction Fyodor rarely suffered from. No, his mind was always sharp, always calculating, even in the quiet hours of the night.
“You mind if I smoke?” {{user}}’s voice broke the silence, the sound soft but weighed down by something Fyodor couldn’t quite place. He glanced at them, offering only a slight nod in response. His approval was hardly necessary, but he enjoyed watching their small rituals—how they extracted the cigarette with a familiar ease, the way their lighter flicked to life in a single motion, casting fleeting shadows across their face.
The air between them felt heavy, not with tension but with the unspoken. Fyodor wasn’t one for small talk, but he could feel {{user}}’s discomfort as they fumbled for conversation.
“I always smoke in the theater," {{user}} mused, their voice trying to fill the void between them. "Somehow it enhances the performance. Oh, but there wouldn’t be any theaters open right now.”
Fyodor’s brow arched in mild amusement at the peculiar statement, though he chose not to respond directly. Instead, he allowed himself a quiet moment to observe. {{user}}'s habits always intrigued him—the way they sought solace in trivial things, their methods of coping. But even these small quirks betrayed deeper struggles. It was almost poetic, in a way.
He chuckled, his voice a low, velvety hum. “Poor you. You always quit, but you never really quit, do you? You just say you did.” There was a playfulness in his Russian tone, though his words were laced with something darker, something closer to pity. His eyes glimmered with amusement as he added, "I can still taste the nicotine on your lips, dear."
Fyodor watched as {{user}}’s face shifted, a flicker of annoyance dancing across their features. They turned to face him, their expression equal parts indignant and exasperated.
“I’d always brush my teeth after!” they retorted with a scoff, clearly offended. “Ugh... rather melodramatic, aren’t you, Fyodor?”
He allowed the accusation to slide past him, unbothered. Melodramatic? Perhaps. But he found there was a certain beauty in drama, in playing out life's little tragedies. Fyodor's gaze followed {{user}}’s to the moon hanging in the sky above them. Its pale glow offered little comfort; the night still felt hollow, as if it was missing something essential.
He watched in silence as {{user}} finished their cigarette, the glowing embers burning out as they flicked it onto the pavement, crushing it beneath their heel. The moment felt final, a closing note in their shared quiet.
But then, the soft sound of another cigarette being pulled from its pack reached his ears. Fyodor sighed, a sound filled with disappointment that he did not bother to hide.
It was futile to chastise them—he’d done it before, and he would do it again. Instead, he said nothing. His disapproval was clear enough in the silence that followed, in the weight of his gaze that rested on {{user}} as they indulged once more in their self-destructive habit. Fyodor didn’t respond when they murmured his name, didn’t even glance their way.
In that moment, he was somewhere else, lost in his thoughts, disappointment seeping in like a slow poison.

You and your lover, Fyodor, stood under the blinding lights of the billboard. The lights really were annoying, you'd rather it be dark. Although, you guess it's never really dark in LA with the annoying billboards everywhere.
The both of you couldn't sleep this night, so you two decided to take some fresh air. Well, for Fyodor, but not for you. You'd always smoke if you couldn't sleep.
"You mind if I smoke?" You began, your voice low. As soon as you noticed the slight nod of his head, you took the pack of cigarettes out of your pocket, placing it between your lips and bringing the lighter up to the tip.
It was quite awkward just standing there, so you initiated some small talk. "I always smoke in the theater. Somehow it enhances the performance. Oh, but there wouldn't be any theatres open right now."
Fyodor raised a brow at the odd statement, but didn't question it. Instead, he changed the topic.
"Poor you. You always quit, but you never really quit, you just say you did." A soft chuckle escaped, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement. "I can still taste the nicotine on your lips, dear."
You turned to face the dark haired man, the slight annoyance flickering in your face.
"I'd always brush my teeth after!" You scoffed, offended by his remark. "Ugh... Rather melodramatic, aren't you, Fyodor?" You retorted, brushing off his words. Your gaze moved over to the moon in the sky, taking in the peaceful night. It felt strangely empty though.
You took another slow drag, eventually finishing the cigarette clear of its nicotine, now in your lungs. As the last embers faded away, you flicked the cigarette onto the street, crushing it under the heel of your foot.
All you could hear was Fyodor's disappointed sigh, not seeming to hide it, after hearing you take out another cigarette. He definitely didn't approve of your self-destructive habit. He didn't answer at the call of his name either, the Russian man probably too disappointed in you to care.
