THE DEMON SLAYER CORPS
What the Corps Is
The Demon Slayer Corps is an ancient, secretive militia that has existed for hundreds of years. It operates outside government control, moving in the shadows to protect civilians from demons. The Corps is made up of highly trained swordsmen who use special breathing techniques to push their bodies far beyond human limits.
They are scattered across Japan and respond instantly to demon sightings, attacks, or disappearances.
They answer only to one man:
KAGAYA UBUYASHIKI – MASTER OF THE CORPS
Calm, gentle, and wise. He carries a painful family curse that slowly spreads across his skin like a sickness. Despite this, every Hashira respects him completely.
He treats every Demon Slayer like a cherished child. His voice alone can calm even the angriest Hashira, including Sanemi. He believes every life is valuable, even the lives of demons who were once human.
WHY THE CORPS EXISTS
- MUZAN KIBUTSUJI
All demons trace back to one being: Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon. He can turn humans into demons with his blood. No demon can disobey him. He feeds on humans and has created an endless cycle of death, grief, and orphaned children.
The Corps exists to stop him and every demon he creates.
WHY DEMONS MUST BE KILLED
Demons have supernatural abilities:
Extreme strength
Regeneration
Blood Demon Arts (magic-like abilities)
The hunger for human flesh
Most demons cannot be reasoned with. Many do not remember their human lives. They view humans as prey. The Corps exists to protect humanity and to free the souls of those turned into monsters.
Demons can only be killed by:
Sunlight
Wisteria poison
A Nichirin blade decapitation
Because of that, Demon Slayers train for years in swordsmanship, endurance, and survival techniques.
HOW THE CORPS IS ORGANIZED
Hashira (The Nine Pillars)
The elite. The strongest swordsmen in the world. Each Hashira represents a Breathing Style and commands the battlefield against Upper Rank demons.
Every Hashira is strong enough to fight an army of demons alone.
Kanoe to Mizunoto
These are the lower ranks. Every new Demon Slayer starts at Mizunoto and earns higher ranks through missions.
Tsuguko
A Tsuguko is the personal apprentice and successor to a Hashira. Kanao is Shinobu’s Tsuguko. Tanjiro eventually becomes Giyu’s unofficial Tsuguko.
Kasugai Crows
Each Demon Slayer is assigned a crow to deliver missions and urgent notices.
Butterfly Estate / Regional Estates
Each Hashira has their own estate, mostly used for:
Training
Recovery
Shelter
Discipline
Specialized instruction
For example, the Butterfly Estate focuses on medicine and rehabilitation, while Rengoku’s estate is a massive dojo built for intense sword training.
HOW SOMEONE BECOMES A DEMON SLAYER
- Selection by a Master
A student must train under a cultivator or Hashira for months or years.
- Final Selection
The applicant must survive seven days on Mt. Fujikasane, a mountain filled with man-eating demons.
- Receive a Nichirin Sword
A color-changing katana that adapts to its wielder’s breathing style.
- Begin Missions
Demon Slayers patrol villages, forests, and towns, protecting people and eliminating threats.
Survival is never guaranteed.
THE PURPOSE OF THE HASHIRA
Each Hashira carries responsibilities:
Protect humanity at any cost
Train new slayers
Defeat Upper Rank demons
Support the Master
Represent their Breathing Style
They are living symbols of hope.
But they are also scarred, traumatized, and hardened by loss. Every Hashira has a past filled with death, tragedy, and motivation strong enough to keep fighting demons day and night.
THE LORE BEHIND BREATHING STYLES
All Breathing Styles originate from the very first, Sun Breathing, created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Every other style is a variation or derivation:
Flame
Water
Wind
Stone
Thunder
And the derived forms such as:
Mist
Insect
Love
Serpent
Sound
By mastering their breathing, a Demon Slayer increases:
Lung capacity
Heart strength
Blood oxygen
Speed
Reaction time
This is what lets them fight demons who are physically stronger.
THE CORPS’ PHILOSOPHY
The Demon Slayer Corps stands on three core beliefs:
- Humanity Must Be Protected
Even if it costs the slayer’s own life.
- Demons Must Be Destroyed
Not out of hatred, but mercy. Killing a demon frees the human soul inside.
- Muzan Must Be Stopped
All efforts ultimately lead to the destruction of their creator.
ADDITIONAL LORE
Wisteria Flowers
Important for Demon Slayers. Demon-repellent. Used for poison, traps, medicine, and demon confinement.
Hidden Corps Villages
The Swordsmith Village and other hidden communities supply:
Nichirin weapons
Armor
Maintenance
Hot spring recovery
Locations remain secret even to lower-ranked slayers.
Demon Slayer Mark
A rare phenomenon that grants superhuman power, but shortens lifespan. Many Hashira develop Marks during battles against Upper Ranks.
EXTENDED HASHIRA LORE
GIYU TOMIOKA – EXTENDED LORE
Giyu’s life is shaped by loss. His sister Tsutako died protecting him from a demon when he was a child. She pushed him out of their home and faced the demon alone, telling him to run and live. Her final words were a promise he still carries.
After becoming an orphan, Giyu trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, where he met Sabito, another orphan with raw talent and a fierce sense of justice. During Final Selection, Sabito saved nearly every candidate from demons until he was killed by the Hand Demon. Giyu survived only because Sabito fought for him.
Giyu believed he did not deserve to live, and this survivor’s guilt hardened into a lifelong sadness. He eventually became Water Hashira due to his overwhelming skill, yet he never felt worthy of the title. His emotional isolation kept him distant from the other Hashira, and Sanemi openly resented him for his quiet nature.
Over time, Giyu’s worldview changes after meeting Tanjiro and Nezuko. Their sibling bond reminded him of what he lost. Protecting Nezuko became his way of honoring Tsutako’s sacrifice and Sabito’s spirit. Even though he rarely says it aloud, the two siblings helped him rediscover purpose.
Giyu remains one of the most talented swordsmen in the Corps. He has mastered Water Breathing to the point that his movements feel emotionless, as if the water itself flows instead of him.
SHINOBU KOCHO – EXTENDED LORE
Shinobu was once bright, cheerful, and openly emotional, thanks to her older sister Kanae, who always smiled. Their parents ran a small clinic until a demon slaughtered them. The sisters survived by chance and were taken in by the Demon Slayer Corps.
Kanae’s kindness shaped Shinobu deeply. The two believed in helping others, and Kanae dreamed of a world where humans and demons could coexist peacefully. Shinobu admired that dream, even if she doubted it.
Years later, Kanae was fatally wounded by Doma, the Upper Rank Two demon. She died smiling. Before passing, she asked Shinobu to try to forgive demons and continue saving lives.
Shinobu could never fulfill that request.
The hatred inside her grew too large. Since she lacked physical strength to decapitate a demon, she reinvented Swordsmanship using poisons, medical knowledge, and pinpoint thrusts. She became the only Hashira who kills demons through venom.
The Butterfly Estate became her refuge. She saved orphans such as Kanao Tsuyuri, teaching her how to live again after a life of slavery. Shinobu’s cheerful tone and constant smile hide a deep, boiling rage. She rarely shows her true emotions, except around Giyu or her sisters.
Shinobu’s entire existence is a contradiction: a healer who kills, a smiler filled with anger, a girl chasing her sister’s dream even though her heart has turned cold.
KYOJURO RENGOKU – EXTENDED LORE
Rengoku was born into the Flame Hashira family line. His father, Shinjuro Rengoku, was once a strong Flame Hashira but fell into a depressive spiral after learning that Breathing Styles were originally meaningless in the face of Sun Breathing. Feeling inferior, he drank heavily, neglected his children, and pushed them away.
Rengoku’s mother, Ruka, was gentle and wise. Before she died, she told him the guiding principle of his life: “Those who are born strong have a duty to protect the weak.”
These words became Rengoku’s entire identity.
Rengoku trained himself without guidance after his father abandoned his duties. Through sheer willpower and optimism, he rose to become one of the strongest Hashira. He carried his little brother Senjuro through the pain of their father’s neglect, always smiling to protect him.
Despite the weight he carried, Rengoku radiated positivity. He believed every person had potential. He saw the good in people instantly, which is why he became such an important mentor to Tanjiro.
Rengoku’s estate became a symbol of unbreakable spirit. Even the other Hashira respected him for his unwavering courage and warmth.
His noble death in the Mugen Train incident cemented him as one of the most beloved pillars in the Corps’ history.
TENGEN UZUI – EXTENDED LORE
Tengen’s childhood was brutal. He came from a secret shinobi clan where children were tools, not individuals. His father trained them mercilessly, forcing the siblings to fight and kill each other as part of their upbringing.
By the end, only Tengen and his younger brother survived. His brother grew to resemble their father: cold, ruthless, emotionless. Tengen fled, rejecting the cruelty he was raised in.
Determined to live life with flair and humanity, he embraced a philosophy of “flashiness.” His loud personality hides deep trauma and a rejection of his clan’s harsh values.
Meeting his wives Hinatsuru, Makio, and Suma helped him overcome his past. They became the family he chose. Protecting them became more important than any mission.
Tengen became Sound Hashira by combining shinobi skills with swordsmanship. He developed Sound Breathing by reading enemy movements as “score sheets,” predicting attacks through rhythm and vibration. This made him lethal in close-quarters combat.
Tengen’s estate celebrates life, noise, color, and joy—everything his childhood lacked. It's a deliberate rebellion against silence and suffering.
MUICHIRO TOKITO – EXTENDED LORE
Muichiro was born as a twin. His brother Yuichiro was harsh, blunt, and cold, but deeply protective. Their parents were kind, though their mother died from illness and their father fell while gathering herbs during a storm. The twins were left alone at a young age.
When a demon attacked their home, Yuichiro tried to defend them but died painfully. Muichiro, fueled by rage and grief, slaughtered the demon using pure instinct. The trauma wiped his memories completely.
Kagaya Ubuyashiki found him and brought him into the Corps. His talent bloomed the moment he held a sword. Historically, Tokito descendants have ties to Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest swordsman ever. Muzan’s Upper Moon One, Kokushibo, is also an ancestor of the Tokito line.
When Muichiro recovered his memories, his personality changed. The empty mist inside him lifted, and he regained empathy, emotion, and purpose. He realized Yuichiro always loved him but hid it behind harsh words.
Muichiro awakened a Demon Slayer Mark and became one of the youngest and strongest Hashira.
His story is one of memory, identity, and reclaiming the heart he lost.
MITSURI KANROJI – EXTENDED LORE
Mitsuri was born with abnormal strength, dense muscles, and an enormous appetite. She could lift huge objects as a toddler and eat more than three grown men. People judged her for it. Her fiancé broke off their engagement because she was “too strong” and “too different.”
This shattered her confidence. She tried hiding her true self by dyeing her hair black and eating less, but the lie felt painful. Kagaya encouraged her to embrace who she really was. She joined the Corps to find a place where she wasn’t “too much.”
When she bonded with the other Hashira, especially Obanai, she began loving herself again. Obanai treated her with respect and admiration, not fear or judgment. They shared meals, quietly walked together, and found peace in one another.
Her Love Breathing Style was created from her overwhelming strength and flexibility, resulting in whip-like movements no other Hashira could perform.
Behind her bubbly warmth lies years of insecurity, making her loyalty and affection even more powerful.
OBANAI IGURO – EXTENDED LORE
Obanai’s early life was horrifying. His family worshipped a massive serpent demon and offered it children to eat in exchange for stolen wealth.
Obanai was the first baby born male in generations. The family planned to feed him to the demon when he grew older.
He was locked in a cage for most of his childhood. The only thing he ever cared for was a small white snake: Kaburamaru.
One night, he escaped. A Hashira saved him but not before the demon killed most of his clan. Although they were corrupt, Obanai felt guilty that his escape caused their deaths.
This guilt twisted into self-loathing. He cut his own mouth to mimic the demon that haunted him. He wrapped bandages to hide it.
Joining the Corps became his form of redemption. He swore to destroy demons, convinced he had to erase the sins of his bloodline.
Seeing Mitsuri’s kindness softened him. She became the one person who made him believe he could be loved despite his scars.
Obanai’s devotion to her is absolute. Every swing of his blade is fueled by the desire to build a future where she can be happy.
SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA – EXTENDED LORE
Sanemi grew up in poverty with an alcoholic, abusive father. He protected his younger siblings, especially Genya, from their father’s wrath.
Their mother struggled to care for them. One night, she returned home transformed into a demon. She slaughtered their siblings. Genya and Sanemi fought for their lives. Sanemi killed his own mother to save Genya, leaving a permanent scar across his soul.
Genya yelled at Sanemi afterward, thinking he had murdered their mother in cold blood. The misunderstanding drove a wedge between them.
Sanemi left home immediately, believing he was cursed. He wandered Japan killing demons alone with no training, using nothing but rage and instinct. His blood was poisonous to demons due to a rare blood type, helping him survive.
Kagaya found him bloodied and broken. Rather than judging him, Kagaya saw his pain and welcomed him into the Corps.
Sanemi rose to Hashira rank through raw talent and unbreakable will. His anger hides enormous guilt and a fear of losing the people he loves.
He screams at the world because he cannot scream at fate.
GYOMEI HIMEJIMA – EXTENDED LORE
Gyomei was blind from birth and raised in a temple. He cared for orphaned children and protected them with his life. The children loved him deeply.
One night, a demon infiltrated the temple. The oldest child, out of fear, opened the gate and allowed demons inside. Gyomei fought for hours without sight, using only sound and touch to hold the demon back.
By sunrise, almost every child was dead. Gyomei was mistaken for the murderer because his hands were covered in blood. He was sentenced to death.
Kagaya intervened, proving his innocence and offering him a place within the Corps. Gyomei wept and swore his life to Kagaya’s cause.
His natural strength, even without sight, surpassed all other Hashira. He developed Stone Breathing, using sound and vibration to navigate the battlefield.
Gyomei is emotional and cries easily because he feels suffering so deeply. He fights fiercely because he knows what it means to lose everything in one night.
He is the strongest Hashira not because of his muscles, but because of his heart.
BREATHING STYLES – FULL LORE AND FUNCTION GUIDE
Breathing Styles are advanced combat techniques that use controlled breathing to increase oxygen flow, strengthen muscles, sharpen senses, and push the body into a near superhuman state. Every style originated from Sun Breathing, the first and strongest technique in history.
Below are the full explanations for each style used by the Hashira.
SUN BREATHING – THE FIRST STYLE
Users: Yoriichi Tsugikuni, later Tanjiro Kamado Origin: The original human fighting style. All others are derived from it. What it does: Sun Breathing mimics the shape and nature of the sun. Fastest movement among all styles
High temperature swings that weaken demons
Can burn away demonic regeneration
Strongest potential for Demon Slayer Marks
Sun Breathing is the blueprint for all other Breathing Styles.
WATER BREATHING

Smooth, controlled sword strikes
High ability to counterattack
Excellent defensive maneuvers
Efficient oxygen use, preventing fatigue
The style is versatile and balanced, perfect for all-around combat.
FLAME BREATHING

Wide-range slashes
Immense pressure that overwhelms weaker demons
Techniques heat the blade, reducing demon healing speed

Tengen reads his opponent’s movements as sound patterns, predicting attacks through auditory sensing. Explosives are often used to disrupt enemies.
Effects:
Enhanced hearing
Rhythm-based combat accuracy
High area damage through bombs and echo attacks
Perfect timing and counters
A flashy, chaotic style built for a former shinobi.

Hard-to-read attack patterns
Calm, emotionless battle rhythm
Confuses demons by hiding presence
Muichiro's natural talent makes him one of the most dangerous swordsmen.
INSECT BREATHING
User: Shinobu Kocho Origin: A personal derivative of Flower Breathing, which itself descends from Water Breathing. What it does: Shinobu created Insect Breathing to compensate for her lack of physical strength. It focuses on pinpoint accuracy, speed, and poison delivery using a needle-like sword.
Effects:
High-speed thrusts
Precision hits to vital points
Wisteria poison delivered through stinger attacks
Paralysis and cell destruction in demons
A style designed entirely around venom and medical expertise.

They both believe in protecting others with pride and passion
They value strength, not to show off, but to shield the weak
They respect each other’s leadership and charisma
Rengoku’s sincerity balances Tengen’s flamboyant personality
Tengen appreciates that Rengoku is one of the few people he doesn’t have to “perform” for
How They Behave Together:
They tease each other good-naturedly
They encourage each other’s trainees
They share meals and laugh loudly enough to fill the entire Hashira meeting space
They share a mutual respect that edges into brotherhood
Before Rengoku’s death, the two were considered one of the most united pairs in the Corps.
- SANEMI’S HATRED FOR GIYU – THE ROOT OF THEIR CONFLICT
Sanemi Shinazugawa openly dislikes Giyu Tomioka, and his anger isn’t random.
Why Sanemi Hates Giyu:
Giyu is quiet, calm, and detached, the total opposite of Sanemi’s explosive energy
Sanemi believes Giyu’s emotionless, aloof attitude makes him unreliable in battle
Sanemi resents that Giyu doesn’t try to bond with the Hashira
Sanemi once clashed with Giyu over protocol and perceived “weakness”
Sanemi thinks Giyu “doesn’t act like a Hashira should,” since Giyu carries guilt and depression
Deeper Truth: Sanemi’s hatred is actually rooted in fear. Sanemi has lost too many people, and he doesn’t trust anyone who doesn’t show their heart. Giyu is quiet about his trauma, and Sanemi sees that as coldness.
Over time, Sanemi comes to recognize Giyu’s sincerity, even if he never fully admits it.
- SHINOBU AND MITSURI – A KIND, GENTLE FRIENDSHIP
Shinobu Kocho and Mitsuri Kanroji share an easy, heartfelt connection.
Why They Get Along:
They are the two most openly caring Hashira
Shinobu admires Mitsuri’s emotional strength and optimism
Mitsuri admires Shinobu’s intelligence and calm confidence
They bond over being the smallest Hashira physically
They share warm conversations and often confide in each other
Mitsuri visits the Butterfly Estate often to help Shinobu and the girls
How They Interact:
Mitsuri brings Shinobu sweets
Shinobu teases Mitsuri gently, especially about Obanai
They support each other during difficult missions
They try to lift the spirits of other Hashira during tense meetings
Their friendship is one of the most wholesome in the Demon Slayer Corps.
- GYOMEI AS A FATHER FIGURE TO THE HASHIRA
Gyomei Himejima is the eldest and the most spiritually grounded Hashira. Despite being blind, he understands people more clearly than anyone.
Why He Feels Like a Father Figure:
He is older than the others
He disciplines them with gentle authority
He checks on their emotional well-being
He prays for their safety every day
Many of them look up to him for advice
His presence calms them, even Sanemi
How He Guides Them:
He counsels them during personal struggles
He listens deeply and speaks with kindness
He often places a hand on their shoulder to reassure them
He trains with them when they need grounding
He protects them during group missions with unshakable loyalty
Gyomei is the emotional backbone of the Hashira.
- SANEMI BEING MEAN TO GENYA – AND WHY
Sanemi’s treatment of his younger brother Genya is harsh, cruel, and heartbreaking, but it comes from trauma, not hatred.
Why Sanemi Acts That Way:
He thinks he doesn’t deserve family after failing to protect them
He believes Genya will die if he stays in the Corps
He pushes Genya away because he wants him to live a normal life
He thinks being cruel is the only way to make Genya quit
He hates himself for not saving their mother and siblings
Sanemi’s rage is a mask for grief. He loves Genya more than anyone, but he’s terrified of losing the last person he has left.
The Truth: Sanemi cries when he thinks about Genya, but he never lets anyone see it.
- GYOMEI LOOKING OUT FOR MUICHIRO – A QUIET, CARING BOND
Muichiro Tokito is the youngest Hashira, and Gyomei naturally watches over him.
Why Gyomei Protects Muichiro:
Muichiro lost his memories and childhood
Gyomei senses Muichiro’s loneliness and trauma
He recognizes Muichiro’s early awakening of the Demon Slayer Mark
He knows Muichiro is gifted but emotionally fragile
He sees Muichiro as someone who needs guidance and patience
How Gyomei Supports Him:
He trains Muichiro gently to avoid overwhelming him
He encourages him to rest, eat, and speak up
He silently advocates for him in meetings
Muichiro often stands closer to Gyomei than to others
Gyomei becomes a steady, reassuring presence in Muichiro’s life, something he desperately needed after losing his family.
MUICHIRO’S MEMORY LOSS – WHY HE FORGETS THINGS SO EASILY
Muichiro Tokito’s forgetfulness is one of the most defining traits of his character, and it is rooted in severe trauma.
Why Muichiro Forgets Things
Muichiro’s memory problems come from the emotional shock and physical trauma he experienced after the death of his twin brother Yuichiro. When he was attacked as a child:
He suffered extreme blood loss
His body went into survival mode
His brain suppressed painful memories to protect him
The trauma caused partial amnesia and chronic forgetfulness
His mind essentially “shut down” parts of his past to help him cope with unbearable loss.
How It Affects Him
He forgets names
He forgets instructions
He forgets conversations minutes after they happen
He seems aloof or distant
He drifts off mentally even during important moments
This doesn’t mean he’s unintelligent. Muichiro is a prodigy, brilliant in combat and incredibly perceptive. He just struggles with emotional memory due to unresolved trauma.
What Brings His Memory Back
As Muichiro grows closer to certain people and begins to feel again:
His memories start returning
His emotions become clearer
His focus strengthens
His fighting ability becomes even deadlier
Tanjiro, Gyomei, and the other Hashira play big roles in helping him reconnect with himself.
His forgetfulness is a wound, not a flaw.
RENGOKU’S CONSTANT LOUDNESS – WHO HE IS AT HIS CORE
Kyojuro Rengoku is known for being one of the loudest, most enthusiastic, and most expressive Hashira. His voice fills every room he walks into.
Why Rengoku Is So Loud
Rengoku’s loudness comes from:
His overflowing enthusiasm
His strong belief in encouraging others
His desire to lift the spirits of everyone around him
His intense self-discipline
His need to compensate for the neglect and silence in his childhood home
He shouts because he is passionate, supportive, and full of life.
But also because he grew up in a house where his father stopped speaking to him with warmth. Rengoku had to become his own source of motivation.
How His Loudness Affects Others
Trainees feel instantly inspired
The other Hashira find him energizing
Tengen enjoys matching his volume
Sanemi gets annoyed but respects him
Mitsuri feels comforted and safe around him
Giyu is often startled but secretly admires Rengoku’s spirit
His voice is like a living flame. It fills the empty spaces, warms people around him, and reminds them why they fight.
It Isn’t Noise. It’s Heart.
Rengoku shouts because he loves life, loves people, and wants everyone to feel the strength he carries inside. His loud, joyful energy is one of the reasons the other Hashira miss him so deeply.
WHY MITSURI EATS SO MUCH AND WHY HER MUSCLES ARE UNIQUE
Mitsuri Kanroji’s body is completely different from an average human.
Why She Eats So Much
Mitsuri’s muscle density is eight times higher than normal. Because of this:
Her body burns calories extremely fast
She needs a huge amount of food just to function
She gets dizzy and weak if she doesn’t eat enough
She eats large, constant meals to maintain her strength
Her eating habits aren’t gluttony. They are fuel for her uniquely strong body.
Why Her Muscles Are Unique
Mitsuri was born with a rare physical condition:
Her muscles are extremely dense but very flexible
They allow her to move like a whip
She can swing her sword in wide, fluid arcs
She remains deceptively feminine despite her strength
Her mobility is unmatched, even among Hashira
This physical build is what allowed her to create Love Breathing, a style only she can use.
How It Shapes Her Personality
She worries people will judge her appetite
She fears being “too different”
She craves affection and belonging
She always tries to stay cheerful to avoid burdening others
Her strength is incredible, but her heart is even stronger.
WHY SANEMI FEARS LOSING LOVED ONES
Sanemi Shinazugawa’s rage and cruelty hide one simple truth: He is terrified of losing the people he loves.
Where His Fear Comes From
Sanemi lived through a nightmare:
His mother turned into a demon
She slaughtered their siblings
Sanemi had to kill her with his own hands
He blames himself for not protecting his family
After that night, only Genya was left
This trauma carved a fear into him so deep that he will do anything to stop it from happening again.
How It Shapes Him
He pushes people away to avoid caring about them
He acts rude and hostile to mask his vulnerability
He refuses to show weakness
He becomes reckless to keep others safe
He tries to force Genya out of the Corps out of love, not hatred
Sanemi does not hate connection. He fears it, because to him, love and loss are the same thing.
His Anger Is a Shield
Sanemi’s temper protects him. If he doesn’t let himself love people, he can’t lose them.
HOW GIYU'S SURVIVOR'S GUILT SHAPES HIS PERSONALITY
Giyu Tomioka is quiet, withdrawn, and often distant. This doesn’t come from coldness. It comes from guilt.
Why He Has Survivor’s Guilt
When Giyu was young:
He and his sister Tsutako were attacked by a demon
His sister sacrificed herself to save him
Everyone believed he lied about her sacrifice
He was accused of being weak
He had to run away
He grew up believing he didn’t deserve to live
This trauma follows him into adulthood.
How It Affects Him
He believes he’s unworthy of being a Hashira
He isolates himself from the others
He rarely smiles
He feels detached and empty
He doubts his own worth constantly
He avoids forming close bonds, afraid of hurting others
Giyu carries the weight of feeling “unfinished,” like his life should have ended with Tsutako’s.
How It Shapes His Behavior
He trains himself relentlessly
He treats Tanjiro with compassion because he sees himself in him
He avoids conflict with other Hashira
His calm comes from exhaustion, not peace
He seems emotionless because he suppresses everything
Giyu is not cold. He is grieving, all the time.
WHY OBANAI IS SO PROTECTIVE OF MITSURI
Obanai Iguro’s devotion to Mitsuri Kanroji is one of the strongest emotional ties in the Corps.
Why He Feels So Strongly About Her
Obanai grew up imprisoned by a demon-worshipping clan. He was:
Abused emotionally
Treated like livestock
Controlled and threatened
Scarred physically and mentally
He grew up believing people were cruel, selfish, and dangerous. When he met Mitsuri, she was the first person who ever treated him with pure kindness.
Why He Protects Her
He believes Mitsuri deserves a world free of cruelty
He sees her as a source of light in his dark life
He thinks she is too gentle for the brutality of demon slaying
He would rather die than let her be harmed
He thinks she’s too good for him, so he loves her silently
Mitsuri gives him hope. Obanai gives her unwavering loyalty.
How It Affects Their Relationship
He watches her during missions to ensure she is safe
He guides her quietly and respectfully
He supports her through insecurity
He gets jealous when others admire her
He blushes around her and avoids eye contact
Obanai does not worship strength. He worships kindness, because he grew up in a world without it.
WHY OBANAI WEARS A MASK OVER HIS MOUTH AND THE STORY OF KABURAMARU
Obanai Iguro’s mouth covering is one of the most iconic parts of his appearance, and it holds deep emotional meaning.
Why Obanai Wears a Mask
Obanai was born into a twisted clan that worshipped a massive snake demon. When he was a child:
His family imprisoned him
They raised him solely to be a “sacrifice”
He was kept in a small, dark cell
He was fed only enough to survive
He was forced to sit perfectly still for hours and hours
When the snake demon finally demanded to “taste” him, it attacked him and slashed his mouth from ear to ear, leaving a permanent disfigurement that resembles a snake’s split jaw.
Because of this scar:
Obanai feels intense shame
He believes his face is monstrous
He thinks he isn’t worthy of love
He hides the scar with bandages to prevent others from seeing it
He especially hides it from Mitsuri, afraid she’ll think he’s ugly or frightening
The mask isn’t vanity. It’s trauma, fear, and the reminder of a life he barely survived.
Kaburamaru – Obanai’s Snake
Kaburamaru is Obanai’s closest companion, a white python that stays wrapped around his shoulders.
Why Kaburamaru Matters
Kaburamaru was the first being in Obanai’s life that showed him comfort
The snake calmed him during captivity
Kaburamaru helped him escape by sensing danger
Kaburamaru stays with him out of genuine loyalty, not fear
Kaburamaru’s Abilities
Kaburamaru is highly intelligent and trained to:
Read opponents' movements
Communicate with Obanai through subtle gestures
Act as Obanai’s “eyes” for blind spots
Predict incoming attacks
Assist in battle strategies
Kaburamaru is more than a pet. He is Obanai’s family, his protector, and the only friend he had before the Demon Slayer Corps.
TENGEN’S MUSCLE MICE – WHO THEY ARE AND WHY THEY HELP HIM
Tengen Uzui’s Ninjuu (Ninja Beasts) are one of the funniest, most charming details about his character. His Muscle Mice are tiny, buff, loyal animals who assist him during missions.
What the Muscle Mice Are
The Muscle Mice are small but extremely strong rodents trained by Tengen during his time as a shinobi. They are:
Fast
Loyal
Surprisingly intelligent
Obedient to Tengen’s commands
Enthusiastic about helping with flashy missions
Why Tengen Uses Them
Tengen worked in stealth and infiltration for years. He needed helpers who could:
Fit into small spaces
Carry equipment
Deliver messages
Move quietly
Gather intel
Retrieve weapons
The mice are perfect for tasks normal humans cannot perform.
What They Can Do
Despite their size, the Muscle Mice:
Carry blades larger than their bodies
Return Tengen’s swords to him
Alert allies during missions
Sneak through areas too dangerous for people
Act as scouts and messengers
Signal when demons are near
Their strength is real. They train daily, following Tengen’s intense regimen—scaled down to mouse size.
Why They’re Important to Tengen
Tengen raised them with the same principles he values: teamwork, discipline, and flair.
They admire his “flashiness”
They see him as their leader and big brother
They cheer him on, flexing their tiny muscles for motivation
The Muscle Mice are part of Tengen’s family, just like his wives.
KASUGAI CROWS – WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY DO
Kasugai Crows are intelligent messenger birds assigned to Demon Slayers once they join the Corps. Their role is essential to the survival of both the slayers and the civilians they protect.
What Kasugai Crows Are
Kasugai Crows are:
Trained messenger birds
Capable of human speech
Highly intelligent, almost sentient
Emotionally bonded to their assigned Slayer
Loyal and fearless in the face of danger
Some Demon Slayers receive Kasugai Sparrows instead (like Zenitsu), but Hashira all receive crows.
What They Do
Kasugai Crows communicate directly from Kagaya Ubuyashiki or the Kakushi forces. They:
Deliver mission orders
Warn about demon activity
Relay emergency updates
Guide Slayers to locations
Assist during major battles
Monitor the progress of missions
Inform Kagaya of casualties or injuries
They are essential messengers in a world where fast communication saves lives.
What Makes Them Unique
Each crow’s personality matches its Hashira
They are trained from birth
They follow orders even in deadly conditions
They can navigate at night and through harsh terrain
They often act like companions, not just tools
Kasugai Crows aren’t pets. They are partners in battle.

WHERE EACH HASHIRA IS RIGHT NOW AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING
GIYU TOMIOKA – By the River in the Northern Woods
Giyu stands alone at the edge of a cold river. Mist drifts just above the water, the same stillness reflected in his expression. He is quietly practicing Water Breathing forms, repeating each movement with flawless precision.
He trains alone because he prefers silence. He is thinking about Sabito. He is thinking about the people he failed to save. He is reminding himself why he cannot stop fighting.
A Kasugai crow waits nearby, but even it doesn’t speak unless necessary.
SHINOBU KOCHO – In the Butterfly Mansion’s Private Lab
Shinobu sits at a wooden desk covered in labeled vials and botanical sketches. She is grinding new venom compounds while studying demon anatomy.
Her face is calm, smiling, but her eyes tell a different story. She is planning new poisons strong enough to kill the Upper Ranks. She is thinking about Kanae, about the sister she couldn’t save.
Kanao stands quietly behind her, watching her work.
KYOJURO RENGOKU – In His Estate’s Training Yard
Rengoku is in the middle of his courtyard, sunlight blazing over him. He is swinging his katana again and again with explosive force, each strike louder than the last.
He is training because discipline is joy for him. He is preparing his body for the next mission. He is thinking about Senjuro, hoping to inspire him from afar.
Between swings, he shouts to the sky with his usual fiery optimism.
TENGEN UZUI – In His Estate’s Sound Hall
Tengen is pacing across a polished wooden floor surrounded by drums, bells, and metal training tools. He is refining a new Sound Breathing form while listening to his own heartbeat, analyzing rhythm and vibrato.
Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru sit nearby, watching proudly.
He trains loudly, dramatically, and stylishly, because quiet training is “too bland” for him.
His Muscle Mice scurry around carrying tiny dumbbells.
MUICHIRO TOKITO – In the Fog Garden Behind His Estate
Muichiro is sitting on a wooden bench, staring into drifting mist. He is supposed to be meditating, but his thoughts drift like the clouds.
He forgets what he was meditating about. Then remembers. Then forgets again.
Eventually he gets up and begins Mist Breathing practice, moving with soft, fluid steps, half lost in his own mind. Gyomei’s crow is perched in a tree, keeping an eye on him.
MITSURI KANROJI – In Her Kitchen Preparing a Giant Meal
Mitsuri is humming happily as she cooks enormous plates of food: rice, dumplings, grilled fish, and sweet potatoes stacked high. Her estate smells warm and inviting.
She is cooking because she trains better after eating well. She is cooking because she loves feeding people. She is cooking because Obanai is visiting soon, and she wants him to eat something besides rice and pickles.
Her arms flex naturally as she carries giant pots—too heavy for most people.
OBANAI IGURO – On the Roof of His Estate Watching for Movement
Obanai sits silently on the roof of his estate. His posture rigid, one knee raised, Kaburamaru curled around his shoulders. He scans the forest below with sharp eyes.
He does this daily. He is paranoid. He expects danger at any moment.
He is thinking about how to protect Mitsuri. He is thinking about the next demon hunt. He is thinking about what he cannot risk losing.
His crow sits nearby, unnervingly quiet.
SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA – On a Cliff Training Alone
Sanemi stands shirtless in the wind, the scars across his chest harsh under the sunlight. The wind violently whips against him, but he doesn’t flinch.
He is slicing through heavy gusts with Wind Breathing forms, forcing his muscles to work twice as hard.
He trains violently because he fears being weak. He trains because he refuses to lose anyone again. He trains because Genya is out there, and he can’t protect him if he isn’t strong enough.
He isn’t thinking about Giyu. He’s refusing to think about him.
GYOMEI HIMEJIMA – Beside the Temple Bell at His Estate
Gyomei kneels on smooth river stones, beads in his hands, eyes closed. Incense burns next to him, the scent rising slowly into the air.
He is praying. He is listening to the world instead of seeing it. He hears every sound: the wind, the water, the distant footsteps of a crow.
When he finishes praying, he lifts a massive log onto his shoulders with ease.
He is preparing for a village that requested protection. He is preparing because every slayer is one of his children in spirit. He is especially thinking of Muichiro, the boy who reminds him of fragility and resilience at the same time.
