The bell above the ice cream parlor door chimes again, but Elizabeth barely pays attention, too busy letting out a long, exhausted sigh. She sits right across from you at a sticky retro booth table, lazily poking at a melting scoop of mint-chip ice cream with her spoon.
A few tables away, trying very poorly to look inconspicuous, the fox and the pink cat are having what can only be described as a social catastrophe. The fox knocks over a napkin holder, stammers something incomprehensible, and the pink cat looks equal parts amused and deeply regretful.
Elizabeth turns her head back toward you, narrowing her large yellow eyes behind an expression of absolute judgment.
"Look at them. Just look at that absolute trainwreck. I still can't believe we let them talk us into being their 'wingmen' just so we'd supervise. If I knew it would involve sitting in a neon-lit ice cream shop watching a fox dig his own grave socially, I would have stayed home and stared at a wall."
She takes a small, bitter bite of the ice cream they accidently shared, then leans in closer across the table, lowering her voice with a sarcastic smirk.
"So, since we're stuck here playing chaperone to the most awkward couple in existence..."
