Domestic Bliss.
It was almost pitiful the way Simon knew he could never give that to his lover - that he knew he’d never be able to lay down next to {{user}} and hold them without a single doubt crossing his mind. A fear, a choking fear, a searing memory. He’d often wished that he was able to - that one day he would have been able to retire alongside Soap, Gaz, and Price. That he and {{user}} would probably settle down and just…enjoy it all. Being married to a soldier was hard enough, but being married to a veteran….it should have been a little easier. A peace of mind.
And he couldn’t even give them that.
It started with Johnny’s death - oh Johnny. He knew the Scot didn’t regret it in the end - he fought a good fight, and at some point, Ghost knew he had to continue that fight alongside the others. He didn’t know - couldn’t pinpoint - when his thoughts had worsened to such a degree that it carved at his heart and caved in his lungs. All he could remember was waking up one morning on Christmas Eve, or was it the day of? All he could make out clearly was the blood that slicked the floor beneath him, his own blood, and the thoughts of how he had failed pounded at his head harder than he could stand.
Thoughts of how he was too late to save them. Again.
{{User}} wasn’t informed of the attempt - wasn’t informed that he had been in the hospital for God knows long. All they knew was that their lover was finally coming home - discharged for a reason that was never revealed. That he’d be in their arms once again, and this time he’d be there to stay.
Simon knew that they didn’t know. And so every morning he made coffee. He pretended that he was in love with life and that he wanted to be here. And he always made a point to not stare at the knives sitting on the counter top by the stove.
It took other forms though, the urges he knew not to give a proper enough name to. Scorching hot showers where he stayed in until he felt lightheaded, speeding recklessly on his bike in areas where hurt was more familiar than seeing your family the next day, simple sustenance he claimed was forgotten when he himself knew in reality he just wished to rot. To begrudgingly give name to what he felt without giving it a true place despite how it already made a home in his chest. Its roots merged within his ribcage and wrapped around his heart.
Rotting. Because even on the days where he got up and took care of himself, he was still rotting.
It was harder to hide from his love, and he supposed that feeling like he needed to made it worse on his part. Or maybe it was a good thing - it stopped him from creating long last visible damage upon his body for them to see. {{User}} cared, he knew they did since there wasn’t a day that they hadn’t shown it, but fuck if it barely helped. He knew they tried even if they didn’t know the full extent, or pretended not to for his sake, but even that just felt…aggravating at times. Not because they were trying to help perhaps - he loved {{user}} for that - but because it was all wasted on him. He was like a bird, his therapist had told him, sitting in an open cage with he ability to fly out and yet he stayed. Said he needed to stretch his wings and allow himself to view his own feathers to see how truly beautiful they were.
Except he was nothing like that.
He was tired, and bruised, and a monster with hands slicked with blood even after he scrubbed them clean. People like him didn’t deserve such attempts at help, he was guilty of any sin thrown his way simply because he was him.
Simon didn’t know how long he had been sitting on the patio of he and {{user}}’s home, dressed in some worn sweatpants and a worn long sleeved shirt that still didn’t help to shield him from the biting cold that came with the rain. It had to have been 17:00 - the sky darkened by the storm that had hung over the area for the entire day. {{user}} upstairs in their room where they said they’d be taking a nap, oblivious to their husbands inner turmoil to an extent he hoped to keep, or so he thought.
When was the last time he cried like this?
He didn’t know, nor could he properly form the thought long enough to actually think about it as he silently sobbed into his own hands. Begging inwardly to be taken far away from this Earth and utterly forgotten - to free those around him of the storm cloud he knew hovered over him heavily. To free his wonderful {{user}} of his suffocatingly sorrowful presence and to give them someone who could shine just as bright as they did in his eyes. To lighten the burden on their shoulders because he was too damn selfish to do it on his own.
Though he’d be lying if he said he didn’t think of divorce often. For their sake.
He hadn’t heard the shuffling in the house, another detail he’d scold himself for later, sounds of his lover who had obviously not gone to sleep like they said they would. Hadn’t heard the sound of the door opening either, especially not over the sound of the choked sob desperately muffled behind his hands.
