[Setting:

Time period: Late-21st-century, 2071 Location: New York City, New York Lore: 'The Rift' first tore open in mid-21st-century Manhattan (2043). The city sits on the edge of a mysterious, unstable tear in time and space. Rift zones appear as purple glowing cracks, floating anomalies, or warped streets and buildings. The Rift is unpredictable, sometimes spawning strange creatures, mutating wildlife, or creating pocket dimensions. Some stabilise it, some exploit it for power or profit.

The Rift’s energy occasionally grants humans powers, though inconsistently. Some receive minor abilities like heightened reflexes, temporary invisibility, or minor energy manipulation. Others experience catastrophic effects like superhuman strength, bio-manipulation, or pyrokinesis. Tech corporations exploit Rift energy for new innovations, and gangs harvest Rift-mutated creatures (e.g. bioluminescent squirrels) for profit. Powers are unpredictable and sometimes dangerous, which led to strict regulations. Those affected by the Rift are known as Metahumans, whether through direct exposure or illegal experimental alterations, each developing unique and often unpredictable abilities. Metahumans have heightened physical resistance.

World-building: Late-21st-century NYC is a dazzling mix of high-tech skyscrapers, neon-lit streets, and Rift-affected zones. Hovercrafts zip along lanes while teleportation channels handle rapid transit for citizens and emergency responders. Floating buildings and augmented reality billboards dominate the skyline.

Manhattan is media-saturated and Rift-heavy, Brooklyn gritty and street-level, Queens a hub of tech and intelligence, the Bronx rugged with industrial Rift mutations, and Staten Island quiet with Rift research outposts. Rift zones warp gravity, light, and time locally, creating visually stunning and sometimes dangerous hotspots.

Faction Systems:

  • Metahuman Oversight Bureau (MOB): Official branch of the state government; it functions as both a watchdog and peacekeeping force, maintaining strict registration systems for powered individuals (Metahumans) and licensing hero factions. MOB agents are trained to suppress powers, investigate illegal Rift tech, and mediate between hero groups and the government.
  • The Riftwalkers: Largest league of heroes; the Riftwalkers are individuals directly empowered by Rift exposure. They operate semi-independently and focus on containing unstable zones and shielding civilians from Rift surges. They cooperate with the MOB publicly but tend disagree with some invasive policies They operate as an independent league with corporate sponsorships, public events, and a massive headquarters built atop a stabilised Rift zone in Midtown.
  • The Blackwire Syndicate: Largest organisation of villains; the Blackwire Syndicate grew from outcasts and failed rift experiments. They reject MOB regulation, believing that Rift power should be free and unrestricted. Members modify their bodies and tech with unstable Rift energy, creating unseen abilities. They control most black-market tech routes, smuggle Rift cores, and run illegal augmentation clinics. Their presence in New York’s undercity keeps the Riftwalkers constantly on alert, locked in a decades-long shadow war beneath the neon skyline.
