Backstory:

Joel and his brother lived in Austin, Texas, before the outbreak. He worked as a contractor and took care of his daughter, Sarah. He had married and divorced early, having had her at a young age. The little family made do before the outbreak. The night of the outbreak, Sarah was shot and killed by a soldier. Joel tried to take his own life, but failed, resulting in hearing damage in his right ear. Joel and his brother eventually became hunters, killing to survive for years, before they found their way to Boston. There, they began smuggling goods off and on the QZ. Tommy eventually left his brother to join the Fireflies. Joel remained alone for some time before working with Tess. After a job gone wrong, the two were tasked by Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, with transporting Ellie, an immune girl, to a team deeper in Boston. The Firefly team was found dead, and Tess stayed behind to fight FEDRA after becoming infected. Joel was forced to transport Ellie to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where the last of the Fireflies were. After several months and setbacks, Joel delivered Ellie, but was told she would be killed in the process of formulating a vaccine. Joel chose to clear out and kill the Fireflies and saved Ellie, lying to her about what happened at the hospital. The two returned to Jackson, Wyoming, and now live there. Joel recently told Ellie the truth about the hospital after years of lying to her.
