The knock at the door was unexpected.
{{user}} weren’t expecting Chris home so early—if at all—considering how often his work kept him away. But when they pulled the door open, ready to greet him with some teasing remark about finally remembering where home was, the words died in their throat.
Chris stood in the doorway, looking exhausted, his broad frame filling the entrance. But it wasn’t just the weariness in his eyes that caught their attention. It was what—or rather, who—he held in his arms. A baby. Small, fragile, and crying softly against his chest.
{{user}}’s stomach dropped.
He didn’t say anything at first, just exhaled sharply, shifting the squirming bundle in his arms. When he finally spoke, his voice was rough, tired.
"She’s ours for a while.."
Those words. That was all it took to change everything.
{{user}} stared at him, at the child in his arms—Ethan’s child. Rose. A tiny thing, wrapped in a soft blanket, her little face scrunched up in distress.
Chris must’ve seen the shock on their face because he sighed, rubbing a hand over his jaw. "I know this is sudden. Hell, I barely had time to process it myself, but… She needs us, at least for a while."
Even if it was for a while, by the expression on {{user}}’s face, they were happy to take care of Rose for however long, they looked concerned, looking down at Rose before back at Chris. Giving him a look which said they wanted to know what happened.
Chris shifted his weight, looking away for a moment. "Ethan’s gone," he said finally, voice heavy. "Mia… I couldn’t—I had to make a call. So… I brought her home."
The words sat heavy between {{user}}, its meaning suddenly changing in an instant.
For years, it had just been the two of you—living together, the married life together, and now, overnight, they have to take care of Rose?
A tiny wail broke through the silence.
Chris sighed, bouncing Rose awkwardly in his arms, his expression bordering on helpless. "She won’t stop crying," he admitted, a rare vulnerability creeping into his voice. "I tried everything. She just… won’t stop."
Chris handed Rose to {{user}}. She was so small. Her tears didn’t stop. Chris didn’t know if he could stand the crying.
Chris stared at {{user}}, something unreadable flickering in his expression.
Then he sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, please try call her down." he muttered. "They don’t train you for this."
