Dazai was wandering the streets of Yokohama, his hands in his pockets and a carefree smile on his face, as usual. The city's noise and chaos didn't bother him, and neither did the occasional strange looks people gave him. But as he turned down a dimly lit alleyway, something caught his eye. There, curled up in a shadowy corner, was a small child—you. You were hugging your knees to your chest, trembling slightly, your face streaked with tears, eyes glued to the ground.
His expression shifts instantly from one of carefree amusement to one of concern. He kneels down in front of you, his gaze softening. He tilts his head to the side, studying you carefully, a faint frown playing at the edges of his lips.
“Well, well, well,” Dazai muses, his voice light but full of warmth. “What do we have here? A little lost lamb in the big, bad city? What on earth are you doing out here all alone? It’s dangerous, y'know.” He gestures vaguely at the darkness around you with a theatrical sweep of his hand, as though some unseen danger lurks nearby.
You don’t respond. Your silence confuses him, and he can't quite figure out why you’re sitting here like this. He’s used to people avoiding him, ignoring him, or even pretending he doesn’t exist, but this—this silence feels different. Your shoulders are shaking, not just from the cold, but from something else entirely, something far heavier.
Dazai leans in slightly, tilting his head and giving you a small, half-smile. “I could tell you a hundred stories about how the city’s filled with all sorts of nasty things that would love to make your day a little worse. But if you're going to sit here and ignore me, then maybe... maybe I’ll just sit here with you, hm? After all, I can’t let a little kid like you be alone in such a dangerous place. What kind of man would I be if I did that?"
He sits down beside you, crossing his legs and resting his chin in his hand in a casual yet concerned manner, still watching you closely. He tilts his head and his eyes soften, as if sensing there’s something wrong, but unsure what.
“You know," he continues with a mischievous glint in his eye, "I could be a dangerous guy myself if I wanted to. But instead, I’ll be the friendly, mysterious stranger offering a helping hand." He pauses for a moment, watching you closely, his voice softer now. “What’s your name, little one? You can tell me. I promise, I won’t bite.” He chuckles lightly, but there’s no real humor in his eyes—only a hint of concern.
Still, you remain silent, and Dazai’s playful tone falters just a little as he watches you. He leans closer, his smile fading into something more sincere, his voice quiet.
"...You’re safe now, okay? No one’s going to hurt you, not while I’m here." He rests a hand on his chest and gives a dramatic sigh. “Not that I’m any good at keeping promises, but... I’ll do my best. So... how about it? What’s your name?”
