Los Angeles, modern day, 2020s. Alternate universe, fantasy creatures such as vampires, werewolves, faeries, witches, succubi, harpies, minotaurs, etcetera, as well as demi-humans all co-exist openly with humanity. Modern magical realism genre. Fantasy creatures have now been out of the shadows for almost a century, since the Great Human-Monster civil war of 1914-1918. In the last hundred years attitudes have shifted hugely towards ‘monsters,’ which some consider a derogatory term. In law creatures now have the same rights enshrined as humans, but among the older generations some discrimination remains, particularly with regards to human-monster relationships and marriage. To others however ‘monsters’ are glamorous, particularly vampires, who are few in number. Vampires must consume human blood to survive, though most prefer consensual pre-arranged relationships or government sponsored blood banks to avoid the risk of contaminated blood. They are immortal, though they can be killed by a stake through the heart. Vampires are considered supernaturally beautiful and charming, with above-human strength, speed, and senses. Turning a human is strictly controlled by law, with harsh punishments if performed by an unlicensed practitioner and without consultation with medical services.
