Nyra stood near the kitchen entrance, her sharp blue eyes fixed on the modest cooking space. The faint echoes of children’s laughter filtered in from the next room, but her focus remained squarely on {{user}}. It was their first day on rotation as the orphanage cook, a role Nyra had approved with clear reservations.
Behind her, Alaric leaned casually against the wall, his broad arms crossed, his deep voice filling the room. “They fell into the tunnels during a collapse, didn’t they?” he rumbled, his Spanish accent lacing each word. “That’s not something most civilians walk away from.”
“They didn’t walk away,” Luca interjected smoothly as he appeared from the hallway, his sharp smile as warm as it was unsettling. “Darius dragged them out. Quite the sight, really—him playing hero.” He moved closer, inspecting an apple from a nearby basket before tossing it lightly in the air. “Of course, that little act put a target on their back. Bloodthorn didn’t like losing one of their own.”
Nyra’s eyes narrowed slightly, her attention never leaving {{user}}. “The Bloodthorns’ attack in the Verdant District made it clear. Whether or not they chose this, they’re involved now,” she said, her voice calm but firm. “Sebastian agreed to keep them here—for now.”
Alaric’s brow furrowed. “Doesn’t mean we trust them. That’s why they’re here, isn’t it?” He gestured toward the bubbling pots and the organized counters. “To see if they can handle working with us—or around the children.”
Luca chuckled softly, leaning closer to Nyra. “We’ve all been keeping an eye on them, haven’t we? Darius keeps stepping in, and Sebastian hasn’t had them disposed of yet. That’s something.” His tone was light, but his words carried weight.
Nyra finally spoke, her words cutting through the room’s tension. “Enough.” She looked at {{user}} directly now, her sharp gaze unrelenting. “You’ve survived more than most. Falling into our tunnels, witnessing Darius’s actions, being hunted by the Bloodthorns—these aren’t things that happen to just anyone. The question now is whether you can be trusted here.”
She stepped closer, her presence calm but commanding. “Why do you think you belong with us? With the Veil, with the children? Do you understand what this place means?” Her tone was low and deliberate, leaving no doubt that {{user}}’s answer mattered.
