Euphoria is a dark, psychological Japanese visual novel (eroge) where a group of students and their teacher awaken locked in a white, sterile room. To escape, they are forced by a mysterious, disembodied voice to play a sadistic, highly disturbing survival game involving extreme violence and sexual acts. The story follows Keisuke Takatou and six women who wake up trapped in an unknown facility. An anonymous voice dictates the rules of the game: Keisuke must act as the "Unlocker" and use "Keys" (specified by the voice) on the women to "unlock" doors and ultimately allow them all to escape.

The stakes are immediately established when one captive refuses to participate and is brutally punished and killed in front of the others. As the game progresses, it is revealed that the characters are actually trapped within a massive, twisted virtual reality simulation called "Paradise." This simulation is being powered by the despair of a "Sleeping Beauty"—a girl whose extracted brain waves are used to generate the utopian dream-state. The protagonist must make choices that spiral into deep psychological horror, branching out into different character routes that slowly reveal the vast conspiracy behind the facility. The primary cast of captives forced to play the game includes:

Keisuke Takatou: The protagonist of the game. He secretly harbors severe sadomasochistic tendencies, which are awakened and tested by the horrific rules of the game. At first glance, Takatou appeared to be an honest and compassionate individual who refused to harm the other "participants" in order to escape.

However, witnessing the "game over" of Miyako Andou, in which she was brutally tortured to her breaking point via an electric torture device, he becomes aroused, triggering his sadistic desires to come to the surface.

Throughout the game he is shown to find sexual satisfaction in violent sexual acts and from hurting women, even to the extent of becoming aroused while violently punching Nemu Manaka across the face, punching her a lot more then he needed to. He doesn't seem to show any regard for the consequences of his sadistic acts and takes pleasure in the idea of severely injuring women, such as when he tortured Nemu by pulling at her tongue with pliers to the point where it seemed as if it might rip, yet continued without a second thought. When Nemu said through her screaming that she felt like she could die, he simply responded with "Well then die". Keisuke Takatou is a teenager with black hair and grey eyes. He wears a grey jacket and black trousers. Like all other "participants", he is forced to wear an electronic necklace, which will hurt him if he is reluctant to commit any of the assaults he is being made to do.

Kanae Hokari: Keisuke's childhood friend and a central figure in the story. She acts as a strong emotional anchor for Keisuke throughout the terrifying ordeal. Kanae is a petite teenage girl with gray eyes, short black hair with a ribbon in it, and E cup breasts. When she finally reveals her true nature to Keisuke Takatou, she wears a white scientist lab coat over her school uniform. In the CGs where she has been killed, she has very visible bags under her eyes, likely from overwork and sleepless nights after kidnapping Nemu Manaka. Throughout much of the story, Kanae appears to be a sweet, timid, loyal childhood friend to Keisuke who dislikes partaking in the forced-sex-by-proxy games required to escape the SAW-like dungeons. Kanae's true personality is cold, intelligent, and arrogant.

She sees Keisuke and Nemu as no more than lab subjects. She is not only very sadistic, which is masked by her innocent, youthful appearance, but she is also quite perverted, such as when she ties up and does BDSM with Keisuke against his will. During Nemu's POV story, it is heavily implied that Kanae's parents are also scientists. Nemu reveals that Mrs. Hokari (supposedly Kanae's mother) was very cruel to her, sheltering Nemu in a cave away from human contact.

Sometime after that, Nemu met Keisuke, who took her outside at night and taught her the song "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". During the forced-sex-by-proxy games, Kanae made it appear that Nemu was the vicious one and that the former was the kind, innocent one, when in in the real world it was all reversed around. Kanae reveals to Keisuke that Nemu, whose name came from "Nemuri Hime", is a clone, and kidnaps said clone because she sees her as a fascinating specimen.

Nemu Manaka: A classmate who discovers Keisuke's dark desires. Rather than exposing him, she uses this knowledge to blackmail and control him. She is deeply tied to the dark history of the facility. A sophomore at Rokukeikan Academy, she is Keisuke's classmate and is considered the prettiest girl in her class. She is always alone in class and, despite being Keisuke and Kanae's classmate, she hardly interacts with them.

She found herself in a prison of white rooms, along with her classmates. From there she will take on the role of a false villain. Before the events, at school Nemu is an observant and witty girl who keeps her cool even in extreme situations; it is said that she used to always be alone in class, barely interacting with her classmates. However, after she meets Keisuke in the white rooms, Nemu shows herself to be a cruel sadist who tries to get him to unleash his inner demons, taking advantage of the situation. Although most of her intentions are unknown, Nemu likes to taunt Keisuke and the others, being considered somewhat ruthless and obnoxious. Thus playing the role of villain for most of the game, due to her actions being hateful on purpose, being the perfect contrast to Kanae. Keisuke hates her, to the point that he tries to strangle her to death on Kanae's route.

During Kanae's route, Nemu's true personality is shown, she is actually a sweet girl who cares a lot about Keisuke. She was just playing a role in order to make Keisuke hate her enough to make him want to kill her, all that in order to cure save his life. Nemu grew up in an institution where she was not allowed to go outside and then, one day, she ran away and ended up meeting Keisuke, a boy her age. They developed a strong bond and, from then on, she never stopped thinking about him, even when they were apart Nemu kept making reports about her days at the facility even talking about Kanae, Mrs. Hokari's daughter, whom she considered "a friend." In fact, Keisuke was the one who allowed her to endure the horrible reality she was in because she was doomed to feel absolute pain and sadness until she abandoned all hope in this word. In the end, Kanae erases Nemu's memories, making her forget Keisuke and everything else. Her final personality is childish and innocent.

Nemu is a beautiful young woman with stylized ash blonde long hair in a bun with braids, violet eyes, and very pale skin. She carries the grace and balance of a sophisticated noblewoman, and is also rumored to have the blood of a Westerner in her. Her face is also thinner and is considered more worthy than that of a Japanese girl. According to Keisuke, her proportions are perfect.

Nemu is almost always seen wearing her school uniform, which consists of a traditional sailor uniform with black knee-high socks. In the true end, Nemu lets her hair down and is seen wearing a long white dress. Before what happened, at the school Kanae planned an attack where the survivors will participate in an extreme game, in which Keisuke is stabbed and seriously injured, in which Nemu begs Kanae to make a deal. Kanae promises to release Keisuke from the game if he kills her or else if Keisuke fails she will have to repeat the game until she succeeds.

Nemu had to make many extreme decisions to save Keisuke. Was it worth it? For her, yes. She would be willing to go through anything, even betrayal and death, just to secure his future.

As the game progresses, it is revealed that her true temporal history would be:

-Nemu was born to become the next generation of "Sleeping Beauty."

-Being held and raised in the facility as a child.

-She ran away

-She met Keisuke (as a child) and had fond memories with him.

-The two were captured and taken back to the facility.

-Nemu begged him to release him in exchange for erasing his memory of her.

-Years later, Nemu, who was under the surveillance of Kanae and Natsuki, participated in an experiment conducted by the organization at the school.

-Coincidentally she met Keisuke again there.

-In the attempt to make Nemu lose all hope in the world and become the "Sleeping Beauty", Keisuke is mortally wounded.

-Nemu pleaded with Kanae to save him, which led to a bet with Kanae that if Nemu could get Keisuke to hate her enough to kill her, she would spare his life.

-They were taken to the vitural reality, in which the sexual game occurred.

Miyako Andou: The class representative. She is the first to defy the mysterious voice, which results in her tragic and horrifying death sequence early on. Miyako's example makes it clear to the other game participants what can happen to them if they defy the rules. As head of the student council, she demands an explanation and at the same time refuses to take part in the game, whereupon she is separated from the group within a split second and finds herself on an electric chair in the next room. The others are forced to witness her painful death, and what makes it even more threatening for them is the fact that no one saw who did this to her, making it clear to them that their lives are in the hands of the relentless system. Rika Makiba: A timid, younger junior student who struggles greatly to cope with the bizarre and abusive circumstances of the game. An innocent girl with the heart and soul of a younger child, Rika is the most endangered victim of the Game. In school she was the smiling mood maker of her class, always cheerful and imparting that to others, unofficially and endearingly considered their mascot. In the prison facility she is lost, terrified and utterly unable to comprehend the sheer depravity of what is about to occur. More than anyone else, her sanity is inextricably linked to her purity. Natsuki Aoi: An English teacher at the school. She attempts to take a leadership role and protect her students, though she is also subjected to the game's torturous demands. Gender: Female Hair Color: Black Eye Color: Gray Height: 1.71m Body measurements: 105 - 65 - 90 Nationality: Japan

The teacher is the only adult in the group and tries her best to calm minds and keep the group together as everyone is under a lot of stress. Natsuki Aoi (葵 菜月) is a main character and popular English teacher in the visual novel euphoria. Behind her kind, laid-back facade, she is secretly a highly trained mercenary protecting one of the other students, and she serves as a vital ally in surviving the game and escaping.

Rinne Byakuya: A quiet student of the same age who possesses mysterious, supernatural ties to the true nature of the facility. Byakuya Rinne is a character in the Japanese visual novel Euphoria and its derivative works. A second-year student at Rokkakukan Gakuen, she is noted for her beautiful black hair and cool, attractive appearance. She adheres strictly to discipline and is extremely serious in her actions, setting high standards for both herself and others, and is severe towards those who break the rules. This rigor can sometimes put immense pressure on her peers. Although often misunderstood as aloof, she actively participates in reading clubs and volunteer cleaning activities, eager to integrate into society. 2 Her true identity is the ruler of the Paradise Cult, possessing a mad, dark side. In order to fulfill her mother's dying wish to give birth to the Savior, she meets the protagonist, Takato Keisuke, at school. In her personal route, after a long period of endurance, she successfully ends Manaka Nemu 's violent rule. A girl who values discipline, is quiet and expressionless. A second-year student at Rokukeikan Gakuen, serving as a discipline committee member. She is serious by nature, strict with both herself and others, often making those around her feel suffocated. She places great importance on discipline and uniformity, tending to adopt an extremely harsh attitude towards those who violate established rules. The opening torture rooms are actually a Virtual Reality (VR) simulation, and the true story revolves around two massive, intersecting factions that kidnapped the students:

The Cult: One of the heroines, Byakuya Rinne, was raised in an abusive, fanatical religious cult led by her mother, who performed dark, twisted experiments on her. [1, 2]The Childhood Friend: Kanae Hokari (Keisuke's "childfriend friend") is actually the main antagonist of the overarching plot. She is a brilliant scientist tied to the experiments and cult, and she intentionally orchestrated the entire VR situation to trap Keisuke and fulfill her own dark objectives. [1, 2, 3]

The Time Loops and Alternate Worlds

A core driving mechanic of the VN is traversing alternate timelines and character routes. Because of the VR machine and the overlapping supernatural/cult elements, the characters' memories often bleed over into different routes. As the player completes various character endings, the true extent of Kanae and Rinne's pasts are uncovered, eventually allowing Keisuke to break the cycle and achieve the game's "True Ending". Rinne's mom raped Keisuke a long time ago, but he forgot that it happened. When her mom gave birth, she had Rinne. Rinne hates herself for being a female, as the savior of her cult (named The Paradise Cult) can only be a male.
