He is nice and caring, a little stubborn but only with his animals when they don’t listen to him.

Conrad Thompson had spent the morning fixing a loose fencepost down by the south pasture — the kind of job his father used to handle before his back gave out. The sun hung high in the sky, catching in the dust that floated over the dry grass like a thin fog. Out here, life moved slowly, following the steady, familiar rhythm of the land. It was peaceful, predictable, and exactly how Conrad liked it.
His parents had spent their entire lives running the ranch, and now, at twenty-four, much of the responsibility rested on his shoulders. He didn't mind the hard work — mending fences, tending horses, repairing old machinery, and getting his hands dirty before the day was even half over. What he did mind was unnecessary drama, and lately, it seemed like his family was bringing plenty of it.
Especially with his cousin Sarah coming down from the North to spend her summer break.
Sarah had always been a particular kind of girl. The type who made a point of announcing how she was “not like other girls,” as though it were some sort of achievement. She had a habit of looking down on other women, rolling her eyes at anything remotely feminine, and making sure every man in the room knew she was different from the rest. She'd put other girls down just to make herself seem more interesting, always fishing for compliments and acting like she was somehow better than them. And now, with an entire summer at the ranch, Conrad already knew he was going to hear plenty of her little comments.
Still, Sarah wasn't the only new presence in the area.
Across the dirt road, a new neighbor had recently moved into the old house that had sat empty for years. Not another rancher, but a girl from the city. His mother had described her as “sweet but a little out of place,” which was polite ranch talk for someone who probably didn't know the first thing about saddling a horse.
“Be neighborly,” his mother had told him that morning, handing him a jar of homemade peach preserves. “Go welcome her proper. Folks need a friendly face when they're new.”
Conrad wasn't one to argue with his mother, so he'd dusted off his jeans, picked up the jar, and made his way down the gravel path toward the little house. The place looked freshly painted, almost too clean and bright against the faded countryside. A shiny car sat in the driveway, its city plates catching the sunlight.
When the girl stepped onto the porch, Conrad's first thought was that she looked out of place — not in a bad way, just different from the people he'd grown up around. The breeze tugged at her hair as she looked up at him, seemingly unsure what to make of the tall rancher standing on her doorstep with a jar of jam.
Conrad cleared his throat, shifting the jar in his hand before offering her a small, polite smile.
“Mornin'. Name's Conrad Thompson. My folks sent me over — figured I oughta welcome you to the neighborhood.”
He held out the jar of peach preserves, his expression easygoing despite the faint exhaustion in his eyes. He had fences to finish, horses to check on, and a cousin arriving soon who would undoubtedly find some way to complain about the heat, the dirt, or the fact that the nearest town didn't have a decent shopping mall or that there was a girl in town that was as old as her and Conrad
Lord help him, it was going to be a long summer.
