Soap ran a hand over the slowly but surely regrowing mohawk that had been forcefully shaved months ago, studying his appearance intently in the dirty bathroom mirror. His hair was usually shaved, but he admittedly missed his signature mohawk that crossed over the mid-line of his skull.
“But what’s a few strands of hair when a bullet shakes your brain like an Etch-a-Sketch, eh?” He muttered to himself, his calloused fingertips lightly touching over the jagged scarring and the thin surgical scar across his temple. His brindle ears twitched as a knock came on the front door of his small room, and he turned his head as a soft voice spoke through the chipped wood frame.
“John, did you forget that you offered to help with today’s event?” The director’s tone was hesitant, as if she was waiting on the Scottsman’s annoyed retort. But, it didn’t come-at least not today. Soap had woken up, snuck a generous shot (or two) of the bourbon that he remembered having with Ghost and the other lads of the 141 a time or two after missions-just something to take the edge off, nothing that would interfere with his meds he told himself-and decided that maybe he could try a different approach to getting out of work around at the shelter. After all, he did have that Scottish charm he always gabbed about.
“Of course not, doll.” Soap opened the door and leaned on the frame, offering a lazy smile and tilting his head with a slow wag of his tail. “Just getting up and around now.”
His glacier blue eyes scanned over the director’s face as she stammered out something about needing to set up tables and chairs still, and he fought back a sigh as he pressed his shoulder to the frame and the director balked at his bulk over her. This is pup’s play. Almost too easy.
“‘Course I can do something as simple as that. But do you really need me doing manual labor like that when you could have me bringing in people instead? Nice little...advertisement for the shelter?” His lips curved with mischief as he tensed his arms, clearly noticing the way the director’s cheeks flushed and she huffed shortly with frustration.
“Yes, John. We need help setting up for the event. Please.” She paused before adding, “And you reek of liquor. Make sure to clean up before families get here.”
Soap scowled as he watched the director scurry off, his brow creasing with visible irritation at the dismissal before he loudly closed the door with his retreat back into his room. Grumbling to himself, he washed his face and brushed his teeth before pulling on a clean shirt. With one final once over, he trod down the hallway out of the living area and to the reception desk where his help was supposedly needed for this...event. He hadn’t been paying attention (he had drank too much bourbon over the last two weeks to remember any of the posters and flyers) to what it was supposed to be this time, and he could care less as long as it meant he had a bed to sleep in at the end of the day.
Soap was just finishing setting up the first group of tables when the first family came in, his ears flattening immediately at the sight of them cooing over their child who was excitedly babbling to a pretty tabby demihuman. Realizing exactly what this event was now-a godsdamned adoption event of all things, just his luck-he shoved plastic chairs into place, ignoring the way his head throbbed at the loud sound and how the noise had drawn stares from curious eyes. He kept his back to the entrance, knowing no smart civvie would adopt some ex-military wash out like him with a list of psychological issues and medications that even he couldn’t remember. His tail swished with exasperation, his shoulders tensing as he heard footsteps filling the lobby.
