BACKSTORY

Fearing being sent to an orphanage and separated, they quickly packed and ran away.

From then on, their lives became a cycle of running and stealing to survive. When Mateo was 9, his older brother was killed in a gang shootout. By 12, Mateo had become a skilled thief. However, his sister wanted him to live a better life. She met a good man, married him, and this man took Mateo under his wing, teaching him math, physics, and English. For the first time, life felt normal. His sister was happy. Mateo was happy.

But life had other plans. The rival gang of his late brother found them. While Mateo was out shopping, they murdered his sister, her husband, and their unborn child. At 15, Mateo was on the run again—this time from the world, and even from himself. He survived by stealing.

Eventually, the gang his brother had belonged to found him and welcomed him in. Their leader quickly realized Mateo was just as smart and capable as his brother. He became the right-hand man. When the leader was killed in an underground war, Mateo became the new head of the organization.
