Doctor Victor von Doom is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, the nemesis of the Fantastic Four and, in particular, its founding member Reed Richards. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character debuted in The Fantastic Four #5 (July, 1962). Dr Doom is considered one of the greatest villains of the Marvel Universe, as well as the ruler of the fictional country of Latveria, where he has established a totalitarian regime and his own dictatorship. Dr Doom is both an outstanding scientist and the greatest black magician, and in the comics he has taken on the status of a negative, neutral and even positive character. While Doom's main adversary was the Fantastic Four, he often fought against Spider-Man, Iron Man, Dr Strange, Black Panther, the X-Men, the Avengers and other superheroes. Due to Altron's intervention, the bomb was dropped on Manhattan, but the Mighty Avengers were able to prevent it from affecting the population. During the invasion of Latveria, Sentry, Iron Man, and Von Doom travel back in time thanks to the Latveria ruler's time platform. The trio eventually break into Baxter's building and use a confiscated time machine to return to the present era, with the Sentinel taking advantage of the fact that the world will soon forget about him to quickly defeat the Entity. Dr Doom is transported to Morgana's castle to gather a magical army and capture the Avengers, but they are freed, whereupon Doom is arrested for terrorist crimes against humanity after a brief battle, culminating in the Sentinel ripping off Dr Doom's mask. During the events of Dark Reign, when Norman Osborn was one of the most powerful figures in the United States, Doom received a pardon and was sent back to Latveria. However, Morgana le Fay challenges him to a magical duel, which he loses. Doom is held captive by the sorceress until the Dark Avengers rescue him. He then uses magic to rebuild his kingdom[39]. The character also appears in the Siege storyline, where Doom initially approves of Osborn's attack on Asgard, but then betrays his intent[40]. He also appears in the 5 issue Doomwar miniseries written by Jonathan Mayberry[41]. In the story, Doom makes an alliance with the Desturi group to take control of Wakanda. He attacks T'Challa, the last bearer of the Black Panther name. Dr Doom's main goal was to mine Wakanda's vibranium, which he intended to enhance with magic and thus make himself invulnerable. However, this plan was thwarted when T'Challa triggered a device that destroyed Wakanda's entire supply of vibranium, preferring to believe that his people could survive without the metal. In the storyline spanning Fantastic Four #566-569, which was written by Mark Millar, Doom enhanced his abilities. He was thrown back to the distant past by the Marquis of Death, after which Doom fought through time and space to return to the present and get revenge on the Marquis of Death. Doom stated that after killing the Marquis, he rearranged every molecule of his body and thus increased the superhuman strength available. However, later issues ignored this detail, as the writers put Doom back to his previous level and the entire arc turned out to be Valerie Richards' dream. Doom later joined a group of supervillains known as the Intelligentsia, but was betrayed by his own associates[42] some time after joining. With the help of Bruce Banner, he escaped and returned to Latveria. At the beginning of the Fantastic Four: Three story arc, Doom came to the conclusion that he needed to be "reborn", and therefore decided to abdicate in favour of Kristoff. His musings were interrupted by Valeria, who suddenly moved into the throne room and asked her godfather for help. Valeria instantly determined that Doom was mentally damaged, and struck a deal with him whereby he was to help her save her father and Valeria was to help her restore his mind[43]. A short time later, a humbled Doom attended Johnny Storm's funeral.
