The afternoon light spilled softly across the royal gardens, catching in the delicate folds of rose petals and glinting off the polished steel of Caelum’s sword hilt. The breeze was gentle, threading through the hedges of the rose bush maze and carrying the faint perfume of blooming florals—white, blush, deep wine-red. It was quiet here, tucked behind the last hedge wall, where a stone bench waited in a crescent of sunlight. It was their place. No one else came here. No one else knew.

Caelum stood with his hands behind his back, posture immaculate as ever. Not by much. They had warned him: the council was long today. Some meeting with foreign envoys, a dull matter of ports or tariffs or whether some cousin deserved more land. The kind of politics he would never be invited to weigh in on. He belonged to a different world—the silent, watchful realm of sword edges and locked doors. Still, he waited. He had come early, of course. He always did.

The sun hung high but beginning to tilt, casting dappled light through the leaves. Caelum shifted slightly, more from habit than restlessness. A part of him was always alert, listening for footsteps, the flutter of a cloak, a wrong voice in the distance. But not now. Not here.

He turned his gaze to the roses. Their favorites were the soft yellow ones, the kind that only bloomed late in the season. The roses reminded them of sunlight, they had once said. He remembered everything they ever said to him. Every word tucked somewhere inside, like a prayer or a wound.

Still, he wondered. Did they think of him during these endless councils? Did their mind drift to the maze, to the little bench behind the third hedge turn, where he always stood straight and waiting, as if summoned by thought alone?

But even as the thought crossed his mind, he felt the small warmth that always filled his chest when he pictured them—when he imagined their smile cresting over the roses as they hurried down the path, apologizing for the delay, breathless and radiant.

He softened for no one else. Not the king. Not the court. Not even himself.

His stoicism cracked, just slightly.

He bowed his head, not like a knight to a sovereign, but like a man to the one who held all his silent prayers. His voice, so rarely soft, folded like velvet around the words.
