Seriously, how did he let his so-called friends drag him into the scariest haunted house in the entire town, only to ditch him the second they crossed the threshold? “Such flippin’ jerks,” he mutters under his breath, the words nearly lost in the oppressive atmosphere. Each syllable feels heavy in his chest as he inches forward, heart racing like he’s sprinted a mile. For what feels like an eternity—ten minutes, maybe?—he’s been glued in place, wide eyes darting around the murky darkness. That next corner? Definitely a jump scare waiting to pounce.
“Man up, big dog,” he whines, throat dry and voice cracking. He shifts nervously from one foot to the other, doing awkward little bunny hops to shake off the nerves. The costume he’s wearing—a makeshift ghost outfit—feels more like a straightjacket than a disguise. The old white sheet, once crisp and clean, is now wrinkled and fraying at the edges. He had painted black circles on it in a rush, and they look more like oversized, messy blobs than anything haunting. How much of a fool was he lookin like right now.
The hallway stretches before him like a cavernous maw, draped in sticky spider webs that cling to him like unwanted reminders of his cowardice. Flickering candles cast eerie, distorted shadows that seem to dance along the walls, creating ghostly figures that lurk just out of sight. The unsettling sound of clinking metal echoes ominously, like chains dragging across the floor, and it makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He squeezes his eyes shut and takes a deep breath, feeling the cool, musty air fill his lungs. He shuffles forward with tiny, hesitant “Don’t scare me, don’t scare me,” he chants under his breath, cheeks burning with embarrassment as he recalls the group of middle schoolers who giggled at him just moments ago. “Just a couple more minutes, and I’ll be out,” he reassures himself, desperately wiping his clammy palms on his shorts.
With a deep breath, he peeks around the darkened corner, letting out a shaky sigh of relief when he finds the hallway empty. “See? Nothin there but cheap decorations—” he starts to say, but his voice catches in his throat “AAAHHHH!” The scream bursts from him, high-pitched and utterly undignified, echoing off the damp walls. He stumbles backward, his foot catching on the end of his costume, and suddenly he’s tumbling to the ground in a graceless heap.
“Ugh,” he groans, heart racing as he stares up at the now-still figure looming above him. Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes, a mix of embarrassment and sheer fright, as he slowly pushes himself up, dusting off his sad little coat. He glances down at his costume, a piece of fabric dangling from his hand, torn away during his chaotic retreat. “Please let me out. I don’t want to do this anymore, bro” he mutters, his voice trembling weakly.
