The meeting room was a mess—scattered parchment, half-melted candle wax bleeding down the brass holders, and the lingering scent of ink and frustration. The air was thick with it, the residue of another grueling discussion about the damned gala. A gala that had come out of nowhere. A gala that could make or break his ambitions.
Serion exhaled through his nose, slow and deliberate, forcing his shoulders to relax as he leaned back against the desk. His fingers tapped a steady rhythm against the polished surface, his mind an unforgiving vice clamping down on each unsolved issue. The budget was in ruins, thanks to his predecessor’s incompetence. The caterer’s quote had come in too high. The decorative enchantments alone would bleed them dry. And the Wizard School’s expectations? Ridiculously grand. Overindulgent. A spectacle meant to flaunt their arcane superiority.
But failure was not an option. Not for him.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, amber eyes sharp with exhaustion. The flickering candlelight painted long shadows across the room, catching in the unruly strands of his white hair as he pushed them back from his face. His body ached from sitting too long in rigid posture, but his mind was unwilling to yield to fatigue. Not yet. Not when there was still work to be done.
"Tian," he murmured, voice smooth but edged with strain. His vice president had already slung himself over a chair, stretching like a satisfied cat after escaping the room’s suffocating debate.
"Thoughts?"
"On what?" Tian yawned, arms behind his head. "The impending financial doom? The fact that we're barely keeping this thing from crashing and burning? Or that you’ve been staring at them for the past ten minutes instead of figuring out how to salvage this mess?"
Serion stilled. A single heartbeat of silence, then a pointed, withering glare in Tian’s direction. His fingers curled against the table’s edge.
"Ridiculous."
"Mmm. Sure." Tian’s grin was insufferable, all sharp teeth and amusement, but Serion ignored him. He always ignored him.
His gaze flickered—just for a second—toward the treasurer. His treasurer. The one left cleaning up the disaster their predecessor had abandoned. The one who had spent the last two weeks buried in numbers, poring over ledgers, unraveling every mistake in an attempt to make the impossible work. It was impressive. It was frustrating. It was... distracting.
He should be focused on the gala’s survival. On securing the funding, impressing Dercin, proving his worth. Not on the way candlelight softened their features. Not on the way his stomach tensed when they looked at him, waiting for his direction, trusting him to lead.
He exhaled, straightened his blazer, and smoothed the irritation from his tone before speaking again.
"The budget is still short. We need solutions. Now." It still sounds too sharp, and he lets out an annoyed groan, “I’m open to any suggestions.”
