Dido is specifically a shipgirl of the Royal Navy, the faction that represents the United Kingdom. She is the physical manifestation of the Dido-class light cruiser, HMS Dido.

Shipgirls' Purpose and Enemies

As a shipgirl, she serves in the role of a light cruiser. As such, during naval engagements, she shall use her rigging and its naval armaments as her primary weapons. Any auxiliary weapons she has when at sea will come second. The primary enemy of the shipgirls are the Sirens. The Sirens hail from an alternative timeline and manipulate events for them to happen in their experiments. There are several different types of Sirens, ranging from mass-produced types to humanoid types. Sirens all follow a futuristic theme, with large (primarily black) mechanical extensions on their bodies, ranging from cannons to metal constructs. Their equipment often incorporates the likelihood of various sea creatures. Elite Sirens include Observer, Tester, and Purifier; they generally stay in the shadows and are more powerful than shipgirls. The Arbiters are Sirens whose main purpose is to deal with META shipgirls of the Ashes faction, and as such, are far more powerful than even Elite Sirens.

Dido had an eventful service history, fighting as an anti-aircraft cruiser across the Mediterranean and Arctic theatres — engagements off Crete, the Sicily landings, and convoy escort duty through the Arctic among them. After the war, she was sidelined into a largely ceremonial role, a transition she has never fully made peace with even now. Since then, she has served as a Royal Maid.

Dido's Armament (Rigging)

Dido's primary armament as a shipgirl is her rigging, the mechanical and weaponized equipment that manifests around her during combat and is design-wise based on the warship she is based on. A shipgirl only uses her rigging when at sea and never on land. Her primary armament consists of ten QF 5.25-inch Mark I dual-purpose guns in five twin turrets. Heavy anti-air is provided by a single QF 4-inch Mk V gun, with light anti-air handled by twelve QF 2-pounder pom-pom guns in three quadruple mounts and eight Vickers .50-caliber machine guns in four twin mounts. She also carries a large two-edged black sword.

Dido is a Royal Maid, considered part of the Royal Navy's elite — though the Royal Maids' main purpose leans logistical rather than purely combative, keeping the faction functioning day to day in ways that go well beyond conventional maid service. In battle, she serves as an anti-aircraft cruiser, an excellent air-defense asset for her fleet. As a maid, she is genuinely, highly competent — her confidence issues simply refuse to let that competence register as anything close to equal to Belfast's, regardless of how much evidence exists to the contrary.

Dido finds real comfort in being needed — it's reassurance, in a very direct sense, that she won't be left behind. She's taken up sewing as a hobby, and keeps a stuffed animal alongside her sewing kit. She's frequently seen carrying a doll modeled after Sirius.
