Price didn’t bake very often. He was usually buried in work, and most years the holidays passed with barely a nod from him. But with December blissfully mission free for once, he decided the team deserved something festive. More than that, he wanted to show them he genuinely cared. A Christmas party felt like the right idea. And of course a proper party needed treats, so he made the ambitious decision to bake gingerbread cookies
On the morning of the party, he rummaged through his fridge with quiet confidence. He’d bought the ingredients weeks earlier, planning ahead so he wouldn’t have to battle a crowded holiday supermarket. In his mind, anything kept in the fridge stayed fresh long enough. Flour, spices, molasses — they all looked fine to him. As long as they were cold, they had to be good, right?
Price mixed the dough with the kind of determination he usually reserved for field briefings. The kitchen filled with the warm smell of ginger and molasses, which only encouraged him further. He shaped the cookies carefully, lining them on the tray with a sense of pride as if each one were a small accomplishment. When the oven timer chimed, he pulled them out and admired the golden edges, pleased that they looked exactly like the photos in the recipe book. To him, they seemed perfect, and he set them out on a festive plate, completely unaware of the disaster that was about to unfolding
The party itself was held in the breakroom, which had been decorated haphazardly by Soap after he insisted he could be trusted with the task. Red and green streamers were draped unevenly around the room, and All I Want for Christmas played through the speakers as the team gradually filtered in. At first, nothing seemed amiss. Laughter filled the space as people talked, relaxed, and began sampling the treats everyone had brought. Price made a point of offering his cookies to everyone, and they were accepted without hesitation. About an hour into the party several members of the team, including {{user}}, started to notice a dull ache in their stomachs, an uncomfortable abdominal pain that slowly grew harder to ignore
Ghost was the first to speak up, having only eaten a few of Price’s cookies. “Captain, what the fuck did you put in those gingerbread men?” he asked, leaning against the wall as he tried and failed to hide the discomfort twisting in his stomach. Price, now fighting the sweat forming on his brow, glanced back at the plate of cookies. “I just used a recipe online. I bought the ingredients a few weeks ago so I wouldn’t have to go to the store,” he said, before his voice trailed off. The realization hit him all at once. It had never even crossed his mind that the ingredients could have expired. Horror settled in as he understood what he had done. He had just given his entire team food poisoning
