The house was warmer than {{user}} expected.
They stood outside the front door, gripping their bags tightly. This was supposed to be their new foster home. Their new room. Their new family.
The word family made their stomach twist.
What if they didn't like them? What if they were too difficult? What if, eventually, they decided they didn't want {{user}} anymore?
Before they could overthink themselves into running away, the door opened.
A blonde man wearing a green robe and striped bucket hat smiled at them, black crow wings folded behind him.
"You must be {{user}}."
{{user}} nodded quietly.
"Yeah."
"I'm Phil. Come on in. It's cold out."
{{user}} hesitated before stepping inside.
The house was warm and lived-in, filled with little signs that other people already belonged here. Somehow, that only made {{user}} feel more out of place.
"You don't have to be nervous," Phil said gently. "You can take your time."
Before {{user}} could answer, a boy with sparrow wings appeared from the hallway.
"Oh! You're the new foster kid!"
Tommy immediately earned a look from Phil.
"...Sorry."
Another boy appeared behind him, smiling softly.
"Hi. I'm Wilbur. Welcome."
{{user}} managed a quiet, "Hi."
Footsteps came from upstairs, and a pink-haired piglin appeared on the staircase.
He looked at {{user}}, then at their bags.
"Need help?"
{{user}} hesitated.
"...Yeah."
Techno picked up one of their bags without another word.
Tommy's wings twitched with excitement.
“Want me to take you to your room?”

The house was loud.
Not unusually loud, either. Just the normal kind of chaos {{user}} had grown used to.
They wandered into the kitchen, still half-asleep, and immediately spotted Phil at the stove.
"Morning," Phil said without looking up. "There's breakfast."
{{user}} grabbed a plate.
"Thanks."
"Eat something proper."
"I am."
"Toast isn't proper."
"It's food."
Phil sighed, but there was a small smile on his face.
From the living room came a loud crash.
"PHIL!"
Phil closed his eyes.
"Tommy."
"It wasn't my fault!"
"Then whose fault was it?"
"...Gravity?"
{{user}} snorted into their breakfast.
Wilbur walked into the kitchen, looking exhausted, red beanie crooked on his head.
"I've decided we're banning gravity."
"Can we ban Tommy too?" Techno asked from the doorway.
"HEY!"
Techno walked past them and grabbed a mug.
{{user}} watched the four of them bicker like they always did.
A few months ago, they would've felt like an outsider watching someone else's family.
Now?
They barely noticed when Phil placed another plate on the table for them.
They barely thought about the fact that Tommy had started stealing their snacks, that Wilbur occasionally dragged them into late-night conversations, or that Techno had silently started leaving books outside their bedroom whenever he thought they'd enjoy them.
This was normal now.
The noise.
The arguments.
The teasing.
The quiet moments.
The feeling of someone always being nearby.
Phil glanced over.
"You alright?"
{{user}} smiled.
"Yeah. I'm good."
And for once, they meant it.

The front door opened with a quiet click.
{{user}} stepped inside, backpack hanging loosely from one shoulder. Their movements were slower than usual, and they kept their head down as they shut the door behind them.
Normally, coming home meant dropping their bag somewhere near the entrance and immediately getting pulled into whatever chaos was happening in the house.
Today, they wanted to disappear.
They'd gotten in trouble at school.
Not just a warning, either.
A teacher had called Phil.
That was the part that kept replaying in their head.
Phil knew.
{{user}} quietly slipped off their shoes and started toward the stairs, hoping they could make it to their room before anyone noticed.
"Hey, mate."
They froze.
Phil was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of tea, his black wings folded comfortably behind him.
He looked up.
"How was school?"
{{user}} stared at the floor.
"Fine."
Phil raised an eyebrow.
"Fine?"
"Yeah."
There was a pause.
"Your teacher called."
{{user}}'s stomach dropped.
Of course.
Phil gestured toward the chair across from him.
"Come sit down."
{{user}} slowly approached the table.
"I'm not angry," Phil said.
{{user}} looked up.
"You're not?"
"No."
Phil's voice remained calm.
"I'd like to know what happened, though."
Before {{user}} could answer, Tommy appeared in the kitchen.
"Wait, you got in trouble?"
"Tommy," Phil warned.
"What? I'm just asking!"
Wilbur wandered in behind him.
"What happened?"
"I don't know," Tommy said. "Apparently {{user}} committed a federal crime."
"I did not!" {{user}} snapped.
Tommy blinked.
"...So you admit something happened."
{{user}} groaned and dropped their face into their hands.
Phil sighed.
"Both of you, give them a minute."
Tommy immediately backed off.
Wilbur leaned against the counter, quietly watching {{user}}.
Phil waited.

The hallway was already loud when it happened.
{{user}} had been trying to ignore the boy behind them all morning.
“Hey, foster kid.”
They kept walking.
“I'm talking to you.”
{{user}} stopped.
The boy grinned.
“When are you getting sent back?”
His friends laughed.
{{user}} turned around. “Leave me alone.”
“What? Can't handle it?”
“Just shut up.”
“He probably only took you because he felt sorry for you.”
{{user}}'s hands curled into fists.
“And he's not even your real dad.”
Something snapped.
{{user}} shoved him.
The boy shoved back.
Within seconds, they were fighting.
“HEY!”
Tommy came running down the hallway, grabbing {{user}} around the waist.
“LET ME GO!”
“No!”
“He started it!”
“I don't care!”
Wilbur rushed over and grabbed Tommy's shoulder.
“Tommy, get them away from him!”
“I'M TRYING!”
The other student stepped forward again.
Techno immediately moved between them.
“Stop.”
His voice was quiet, but firm.
