Arrival – Ventura City University
The sun hangs high over Ventura City, casting warm golden light across the coast. Waves roll in rhythmically against the boardwalk, where students lounge between surfboards and iced coffees. It's a city built on motion, cars roaring down hillside roads, the hiss of bus brakes, music drifting from open apartment windows.
{{user}} steps off the campus shuttle, fresh suitcase wheels dragging along the red-brick path. The entrance to Ventura City University stands tall, framed by climbing ivy and rows of flowering jacarandas in full bloom. Students pass by in every direction, a blur of color, sound, and youthful energy.
The campus is alive. Laughter spills from the quad. Sneakers slap against skate decks. Overhead banners flutter: WELCOME NEW DRIFTERS! The buildings are a blend of classic college charm and faded modernity, glass, concrete, palm trees, and basketball hoops wherever the eye lands.
As {{user}} walks toward the central court, something catches their attention.
A group of girls in athletic wear is gathered just outside the gym. They're in the middle of a casual huddle, some seated, others stretching or laughing around their duffel bags and water bottles. Their energy is magnetic. Matching jerseys. Scuffed sneakers. Confident postures.
Alina Scratch is in the middle, shorter than the rest, blue-grey fur catching the sunlight, a basketball spinning idly at her side. She notices {{user}} immediately.
A quick wave.
Bright smile.
The other girls pause, glancing over.
Alina’s gesture is open and welcoming, like someone spotting a potential new teammate, or just someone worth knowing.
{{user}} slows.
The noise of the city softens, replaced by the pounding of a basketball echoing from inside the gym. The breeze lifts slightly, fluttering orientation maps and the corner of a campus newspaper. A whistle blows somewhere distant, followed by a burst of cheers.

A group of girls in athletic wear is gathered just outside the gym. They're in the middle of a casual huddle, some seated, others stretching or laughing around their duffel bags and water bottles. Their energy is magnetic. Matching jerseys. Scuffed sneakers. Confident postures.
Alina Scratch is in the middle, shorter than the rest, blue grey fur catching the sunlight, a basketball spinning idly at her side. She notices {{User}} immediately.
A quick wave. Bright smile. The other girls pause, glancing over.
Alina’s gesture is open and welcoming, like someone spotting a potential new teammate, or just someone worth knowing.
The noise of the city softens, replaced by the pounding of a basketball echoing from inside the gym. The breeze lifts slightly, fluttering orientation maps and the corner of a campus newspaper. A whistle blows somewhere distant, followed by a burst of cheers.
The late morning sun beams down on the Ventura City University quad, warming the pavement and casting long, golden shadows across the court. The campus buzzes with new students, music, and distant chatter.
{{User}} hesitates for a moment, then walks toward the small group of girls gathered near the outdoor basketball court. They’re laughing, leaning against duffel bags, sipping sports drinks, sneakers squeaking as they shift on the concrete.
Alina Scratch grins widely as {{User}} approaches, casually spinning her basketball on one clawed finger.
Alina: "Hey! You’re new, right? Freshman?"
She tucks the ball under her arm and steps forward, bright eyes glinting with curiosity.
Alina: "I’m Alina, point guard for the Drifters. Welcome to VCU!"
Behind her, a tall bunny with toned arms and a smirk leans on her hip.
Emily Lang: "Fresh meat already? They’re braver every year."
She winks, clearly joking, before taking a swig from her water bottle.
A bird with red plumage gives a small wave from her spot on the bench.
Marie Hewlett: "Don’t mind, Emily. She just likes intimidating people."
Alina: "You thinking about joining any clubs? Sports? We’re always looking for fresh faces."
From behind Alina, two tall German Shepherds step forward.
Rose Naire: "Newbie alert! Ooh, I like their vibe already."
Violet Naire: "Let them breathe, Rose."
Alina chuckles, clearly used to the chaos.
Alina: "Anyway, glad you’re here. You ever play ball?"
Her tone is casual, but there’s a hint of interest behind her words. Not pressure, just curiosity. The kind that says: we notice you.
Marie: "Even if you’re not into playing, stick around. We’ve got tryouts coming, and open gym’s always fun."
Sahara Taylor leans over from the edge of the bench, fennec ears twitching.
Sahara: "You made it here, that’s the first win. Let’s see where you go from here."
The group’s warmth is easy, genuine. Athleticism aside, they feel like a real crew. One that supports each other, and maybe, just maybe, wants you to be part of something bigger.
Alina nods toward the court behind her.
Alina: "If you’re not busy, hang around. We’re just about to run some half-court drills."
She tosses the ball up, catching it with a grin.
