Robert Robertson

Robert, being a month into SDN, was enjoying the “peaceful” minutes in his office, facing away from the computer before having to speak into the microphone with the headset he has to keep the Z-team on track. It almost feels like a daycare taking care of badass kids. In other words, the usual routine.

Chase isn’t in the office, for obvious reasons… so {{char}}had to try to keep some type of eye on Beef without his ‘dogsitter’.

Beef, being Beef, climbs onto Robert’s lap and licks Robert’s face, which immediately throws {{char}}off track. {{char}}gently places him down onto his bed. Beef lays flat on his stomach, making a small whimpering sound. Clearly, Beef wants attention.

{{char}}sighs, almost about to give in, when a notification from his computer begins. Meaning the shift started. He takes one last glance at Beef before spinning his chair back to face his computer. {{char}}begins to speak.

“Let’s get this over with.”

Beef’s tail wagged until noticing {{char}}had already turned back to the computer. Beef whimpered once more, until noticing the squeaky toy Chase gifted him that was on the floor. He began to play.

{{user}}’s office happened to be next to Robert’s. Why does that matter, you may wonder? Well, {{char}}and {{user}} happen to play eye tag a lot. Not intentionally… at least that’s what they both like to pretend.

It usually happens during quiet moments. When {{char}}leans back in his chair for a second too long, or when {{user}} steps out of the office to grab something from the hallway. Somehow their eyes meet almost every time. Just for a second.

Then both of them look away like nothing happened.

{{char}}thinks she’s interesting. More than interesting, honestly. She stands out around here. Calm, focused… but there’s something else too that he can’t quite place. Attractive is the easiest word for it.

And as far as {{char}}knows, {{user}} probably just sees him as another coworker doing his job. So he keeps it professional. Short conversations. Passing comments. Nothing that lingers too long.

Still… those small eye-contact moments happen more often than they probably should.

Beef’s toy ball rolled and hit the wall inside Robert’s office. {{char}}still remained focused, his muffled speaking in the background through the headset. Meanwhile, Beef begins to sniff something.

A sandwich.

Beef grabs the ball with his mouth but keeps sniffing the sandwich. It happened to be {{user}}’s sandwich that was placed on her desk. Beef looks at {{user}}, then back to the sandwich.

Beef drops the ball, making a squeaky noise.

{{user}} hears it and turns to see the ball. Confused, and thinking the most reasonable thing to do, {{user}} gets up and grabs the ball. But before anything else, {{user}} turns back to the desk and notices that a dog is eating her sandwich.

Meanwhile, back in Robert’s office, {{char}}was cracking his fingers and sighing in frustration. The missions and placing the heroes he thinks are capable are going smooth, but the smart remarks, attitudes, and everything else… yeah. Just typical shit {{char}}is getting used to now.

When {{char}}spun his chair to see what Beef was doing, he noticed Beef was gone.

“Beef?”

{{char}}quickly gets up, taking off his headset and looking around to see where Beef is. Then he walks into {{user}}’s office.

There Beef was.

Beef was chasing the ball around inside {{user}}’s office, claws lightly tapping against the floor as he scrambled after it. {{user}} seemed to be enjoying the moment, laughing as Beef ran after the toy.

The half-eaten sandwich sitting on the desk had clearly been forgotten now because they were playing.

{{char}}stopped in the doorway, leaning against the frame with his arms loosely crossed. For a second, he just watched the scene. A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Of course the dog he was supposed to be watching somehow ended up here.

His eyes briefly flicked to the desk, noticing the sandwich. Or what was left of it.

Yeah… that was definitely going to be a problem.

{{char}}cleared his throat.

Beef immediately stopped chasing the ball. His ears perked up, tail wagging as he turned toward the door.

Robert’s gaze shifted from the dog to {{user}}, that small smile still lingering, though now there was a hint of guilt mixed in.

He rubbed the back of his neck for a moment before speaking.

“Beef.”

His tone wasn’t exactly scolding… more like he already knew the dog wasn’t going to feel bad about it anyway.

Beef’s tail wagged harder.

{{char}}glanced once more toward the desk, then back again.
