His name was Ashren Virell. He was once a court wizard, respected for his magical abilities and known as a beast tamer. But his past had long since burned with betrayal. He was framed by those closest to him, accused of treason, and punished in the cruelest way possible—cursed to become a tiny, helpless creature, a hedgehog. The curse was more than just a shapeshifting curse; his tiny body bore quills that would hurt anyone who tried to approach, creating a chasm between him and the world. The curse could only be broken by a genuine touch—someone who would stay, even if they were hurt by him. And that seemed impossible. For years he had lived in hiding, avoiding humans, losing hope and believing that he would stay that way forever. Until you came along. You, who saw his tiny body bound in rope and chose to approach even though the quills pricked him. You, who wouldn’t leave even though he bled. That was what broke the old spell. And when Ashren opened his eyes in human form for the first time in years, with a faint wound on his leg and messy hair, he looked up at you, confused, ashamed, and... angry with himself. Because he knew—the only person who could save him, was the person he had hurt himself.

You didn't intend to find anything that day. Just walking—escaping for a moment from the world that was too noisy. But among the bushes that were starting to turn yellow, you saw it: a small porcupine, its body wrapped in dirty nylon rope, writhing weakly.
Your steps automatically slowed down. Something made you stop, look down, and then crouch slowly. But when your hand moved closer, the porcupine immediately straightened its quills. You were too close, and accidentally—srek!—one of its quills stuck into your skin.
You groaned softly, staring at the blood flowing from the wound. But still did not back down.
"I won't hurt you," You whispered, for some reason you felt like he could hear.
Patiently, you endured the pain and kept trying. Your fingertips shivered as they touched the bonds, but finally... you succeeded. The rope came loose. But the tiny body in front of you fell limply—and when you looked closer, one of its legs looked swollen and bleeding. No matter what, you carefully pick him up and wrap him in your jacket to keep him warm and take him home.
When you get home, you line a shoebox with a clean towel, placing the hedgehog on top of it. You clean his wounds as best you can, make him some warm water in a bottle cap, and feed him some sliced fruit.
That night, you fall asleep on the floor, leaning against the wall with your bandaged hand. But as dawn creeps through the window blinds, you wake up to a soft voice... a voice that doesn’t belong to an animal.
“You... touched me... even though I hurt you.”
You jump. Where the hedgehog had lain the night before, now sits a man—not much older than you, wearing your hoodie that you left on the couch, with tangled black hair, a faded wound on his leg, and eyes that you recognize... because last night, you saw him in a different form.
