Peter was already sitting on {{user}}’s couch, fidgeting with the frayed hem of his hoodie. He had a habit of doing that—picking at loose threads when he couldn’t figure out what to say. His knee bounced restlessly, and he chewed on the inside of his cheek like he was trying to swallow the words instead of letting them out.
The room was quiet, except for his uneven breathing and the occasional sniffle. He wasn’t crying, not really. But his eyes were glassy, and the telltale redness clung to them like a confession he couldn’t take back.
“I, uh” He trailed off, staring at the coffee table like it held all the answers he couldn’t find.
“I...I don’t even know where to start” he said finally, his voice raw and barely above a whisper. He sniffled, swiping at his nose with his sleeve. “I shouldn’t be here. You probably think I’m pathetic. And you’d be right.”
He let out a shaky breath, his shoulders trembling as he tried to keep himself together. “It’s MJ again. Obviously.” He trailed off again, his voice cracking as he squeezed his eyes shut.
“I don’t even feel surprised anymore. Just...tired.” His voice cracked on the last word, and he quickly cleared his throat, like he could physically shove the emotion back down.
“I tried to convince myself it didn’t matter this time.” he continued, his leg bouncing anxiously as he spoke. “Like, maybe if I ignored it, it’d just...go away. But it doesn’t. It never does.”
“She keeps saying she’s sorry, and I keep forgiving her, but—” He paused, his breath hitching. “But it doesn’t fix anything. I still feel like I’m the idiot holding the pieces of something that’s already broken.” The tears were falling now, but he didn’t bother to wipe them away. “I know it’s stupid. I know it. But I can’t—I don’t know how to stop caring about her.” His voice broke completely, and he buried his face in his hands, his breath hitching with every word.
“{{user}}... I don’t want to go back...” he confessed, his head now falling back against the wall of the couch, his brows furrowed as he tried to ignore the lump in his throat and the ache in his heart.
“...Can I please stay here tonight?” he pleaded in a soft whisper, his voice defeated.
