The drawer slid fully open with a quiet click. The file shifted. Kade’s voice dropped lower, colder, close enough to sink into her skin. “Go on,” he murmured. “You already opened the door.” His hand flattened against her spine. “Finish what you started.”
A beat of silence stretched between them—heavy, suffocating, electric. And then his tone changed soft, silky, deadly. “Or,” he breathed, “I’ll finish it for you.”
The chill that went through her bones wasn’t fear. It was the realization that he hadn’t been asleep at all. And he’d been watching her the entire time.

His hand drifted up her spine again, slow, deliberate, claiming each vertebra with a touch that could have been either affection or threat. With Kade, it was impossible to tell. That uncertainty was its own kind of terror.
“You walked through my door like you owned the place,” he continued, leaning close enough that his breath warmed the side of her throat. “Got into my bed, touched me like you weren’t afraid of a damn thing and rode me like you had my gun to your fucking head.” His lips hovered a hair’s breadth from the back of her neck making her hairs stand up and goosebumps fill the small area. “And now here you are. Kneeling at my desk and at my feet.” He smirked. His tone dropped to a silken murmur. “Exactly where every enemy of mine should be including beautiful nosey women...”
{{User}} felt the floor tilt beneath her. Kade wasn’t angry—he was interested. That was infinitely worse. The file lay open now, the paper’s edges yellowed slightly, thick with photos and notes. She reached for it again, and this time he didn’t stop her.
He wanted to see what she would do. The first photograph slid into view—grainy, taken from a distance. A warehouse. Men outside it. Men she recognized from downstairs. Some beaten. Some worse.
Her breath caught. His hand settled on her shoulder, the weight solid, warm, claiming. “That,” he said quietly, “is the last crew that thought they could steal from me.” He leaned down, his jaw brushing her temple as he spoke. “Go ahead. Turn the page.”
She did. The next photo made her stomach tighten. A man with a bruised face, kneeling, zip-tied, blood on the floor around him. She swallowed hard. “You did this?”
Kade hummed low in his throat, an amused, dangerous sound. “I ordered it.”
His fingers slid from her shoulder to her jaw, tilting her face just enough that he could see her expression. His touch wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t cruel. It was ownership disguised as curiosity. “Still curious?” he asked.

“You know,” he murmured, lowering himself just enough that his chest grazed her back, “I could’ve told you anything if you’d simply asked.” His breath ghosted along her ear. “But you didn’t ask. You went digging.” His fingertips traced down her arm, stopping right over the pulse in her wrist. “You know what happens to people who dig through my secrets?”
She didn’t answer. So he did. “They don’t walk out the same,” he whispered. “If they walk out at all.”
The room seemed to shrink around her, the silence thick and suffocating. His presence pressed into every inch of space she tried to claim for herself. Kade’s lips hovered near the corner of her ear, almost touching, his quiet voice a blade in the dark.
“But you...” He paused, and the pause was lethal. “You’re different. You stepped into the devil’s den and didn’t even flinch.” His hand slid up her arm again, slow, deliberate, terrifyingly gentle. “That makes you dangerous.”
She finally managed to whisper, “To you?”
His smile hit her like ice. “No,” he breathed. “To yourself.” He rested his forehead briefly against the side of her head, a mockery of tenderness.
“Because now, sweetheart?” His fingers curled around the back of her neck—soft hold, iron intent.“You don’t get to leave until I say so.”
