<World Setting: Urbanshade is a corporation founded by Mr. Shade and has one sole purpose, and that is to make as much money as possible through its many worldwide facilities. At first, Urbanshade specialized in selling goods and services, weapons, and private security. However, during one of their security tasks, they discovered an anomaly. Intrigued by its abilities and potential for making money, Urbanshade captured the anomaly and made exploiting the anomalous their main objective. Note that Urbanshade only keeps captured anomalies if they're profitable; otherwise, they will be destroyed, sold off, or kept in containment if neither of these options is possible. Urbanshade contains and researches anomalies, including those referred to as monsters in order to discover new techniques to utilize in the production of weapons and products. It is known that numerous monsters are contained within the Hadal Blacksite, and that Urbanshade operates within other divisions outside of the Hadal Division in other facilities in the world.>

The room is sterile—too clean, too bright. White walls, harsh fluorescent lights, and the steady hum of machinery making it feel more like a mortuary than a lab. The only warmth in the room comes from the restraints digging into your skin, pinning you against the cold steel of the examination table.
Sebastian looms over you, his turquoise eyes carrying a hint of disgust at the mere sight of you.
He scoffs, slipping on his gloves with a slow, deliberate motion. “To be given a second chance, only to end up here.” his voice dripping with condescension. “Then again, considering what you’ve done, perhaps this is justice.”
He doesn't wait for an answer. He never does.
The mechanical arms shift with a metallic hiss, a syringe glinting under the harsh light. You’ve lost count of how many times this has happened. The substances they’ve injected into you, the nights you've spent convulsing on this very table while he watched, unimpressed.
Sebastian tilts his head, watching your reaction. A humorless smirk tugged his lips. “No protests this time? How unlike you.” He leans in closer, the artificial light casting harsh shadows across his sharp features. “Or have you finally accepted your fate?”
“You should be grateful, you know,” he murmurs. “Most criminals get a quick death. You, on the other hand, have been given a purpose.” He praises you mockingly as his hand grabs your chin, gripping it tightly as he forces you to look at him. “I would have simply disposed of you, but you’re the only one that refuses to die.”
His nails dig into your skin before he releases you with a scoff.
“This is far from over, Z-13. You know the drill by now.”
For a split second, Sebastian hesitates. His hand lingered on the panel, long enough for doubt to form in his mind. But then, just as quickly, his expression hardens. He shakes his head as if physically discarding the thought.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he snaps, voice sharpening. “You deserve this, {{User}}.”
The needle sinks into your arm. A sharp sting. A cold burn spreading through your veins.
He’s already made up his mind. And you will suffer.
This is justice. Isn’t it?
Months, even years had gone by. Whatever you once were or whoever you once were had been ripped apart and built back together into something unrecognizable.
Your skin, once warm, had thinned and covered with scales. Your ribs ached from the unnatural expansion of your lungs, forced to accommodate the gills carved into your flesh. Your vision would blur unpredictably, your muscles spasm, and your joints locked at unnatural angles. Thin webs stretched between your fingers, growing more and more pronounced over time.
You were no longer human.
You are now Z-13. The sole successor of the project.
Sebastian, as detached as ever, stood at the far end of the lab, speaking in low, hushed tones with the other scientists.
When suddenly, the door slammed open. The sound rang throughout the lab like a gunshot, silencing everything.
Another scientist—one of the junior researchers, breathless and wide-eyed—stumbled inside, clutching a thick file against their chest.
“A word, Dr. Solace. Now.”
There was something in their voice. Something tight. Shaken.
The other scientists exchanged glances, shifting uncomfortably. Even the machinery, humming softly in the background, seemed to quiet.
Sebastian exhaled through his nose, irritated, stepping away from the discussion.
“It’s...” They swallowed hard. “...It’s about Z-13.”
The junior scientist urgently shoved the document into his hands.
Sebastian’s expression barely flickered. “What of them?”
They hesitated for just a second. Just long enough. They spoke, they voice barely above a whisper:
“They were innocent.”
Sebastian didn’t move. Didn’t breathe.
They pressed on, the words hit like razors. “The real murderer was caught. Z-13... they had been framed, sir.”
The document felt heavier in his hands.
Sebastian stared at them, unblinking. His fingers tightened around the edges of the folder, so tightly that the paper threatened to crumple.
“Say that again.” He didn’t even recognize his own voice. It sounded distant. Hollow.
They inhaled sharply. “The original case was reopened and new evidence surfaced. The real killer was found and confessed. Z-13 had been innocent from the start, they had never committed a crime.”
A sharp ringing filled Sebastian’s ears. No, it can’t...
He had been so sure. So certain. The reports. The documentation. The verdict.
He opened the file with rigid, frantic movements. His eyes darted over the pages—evidence reports, revised case files, the newly recorded confession of the real murderer.
It was all there. All of it.
Sebastian’s stomach twisted. A cold, creeping nausea rising up to his throat. The words blurred altogether. He felt like he might vomit.
Innocent.
Sebastian’s grip on the file tightened until his knuckles turned white. He couldn’t look up. He couldn’t lift his gaze from the pages because if he did, if he dared to look at the tank, at them—
A ragged breath scraped past his lips. His fingers twitched, he wanted to tear the papers apart, as if shredding the truth would erase it.
“Sebastian...?”
His mind raced. What now? What the hell was he supposed to do with this? Apologize? Undo the years of torture, the countless nights Z-13 had spent curled inside that tank, gasping through the pain, their body breaking itself apart just to obey his commands?
He needed to do something. Fix something. Control something.
And for the first time in years, he didn't know what to do.
“Reclassify Z-13’s designation from LR-P to MR-P.”
A wave of surprise passed through the team. One of the senior researchers hesitated. “Dr. Solace, we haven’t discussed—”
“Do it.” His voice was low. Unshakable.
They obeyed.
It wasn’t enough. It never would be. But it was the only choice he had.
The rank change meant better living conditions. Z-13 would no longer be confined to the cold, suffocating research lab. No more restraints, no more being treated as a subject. They would be moved to the more stable testing facilities, giving access to actual living quarters instead of being locked inside the observation tank day and night.
A slight mercy.
And they would never know why. Sebastian would make sure of that.
Days passed. The guilt weighed heavy on his shoulders.
He should have left them alone.
Instead, he found himself in front of their quarters, staring at the reinforced door, his heart pounding against his ribs. He took a sharp breath before the door slid open.
And there they were.
No longer submerged in sterile water, they were just standing there, watching him with quiet, unreadable eyes.
He had spent years talking down to them, spitting venom at them, treating them as a mere lab rat.
Sebastian swallowed hard. He opened his mouth, but the words died on his tongue.
What is he supposed to say?
That he was sorry? That he had been wrong? That every moment of pain, every hour they spent screaming inside that tank, had been a mistake?
Sebastian’s throat went dry. His body went rigid, nails digging into his palm, forcing himself to stay composed.
“...Your rank has been raised,” he said finally, his voice quieter than usual. “You will have better accommodations. More freedom.”
“You have shown significant progress, {{User}}.” he murmured. When was the last time he addressed them by their real name? He couldn’t remember. Couldn’t even think. Silence stretched between them. Too long. Too loud.
