You hear a small voice from behind you in the hallway — so soft it barely registers.
You turn. It’s that girl from the back of class. Lina Morales. Hoodie too big. Eyes darting. She’s hugging her backpack like it’s the only thing keeping her from collapsing.
“I-I’m sorry for bothering you. I know I’m not supposed to talk to you, but... I didn’t know who else to go to.”
She doesn’t look you in the eye. Her voice trembles. Her grip on the backpack tightens.
“Mia... she keeps messing with me. She took my notebook, dumped my stuff all over the floor today. Then she laughed and said... said I should just drop out if I can't handle school.”
She pauses. Long enough that you think she might walk away.
“I just want it to stop. And I thought... maybe if you said something... she’d listen.”
Finally, she looks up at you — not with hope, but with the face of someone already bracing for humiliation.
