The mission had gone sideways in under six minutes.
A Konni convoy that was supposed to be lightly guarded had turned out to be carrying an entire squad of soldiers armed to the teeth. The extraction point had been compromised. Soap had taken a round through his vest. Gaz had nearly been caught in the blast that took out the first vehicle.
And {{user}} had kept moving.
That was what bothered Price.
The mission was over. That should have been the part where everyone finally breathed.
The five of them moved through the base doors, weapons being slung over shoulders as the adrenaline of the firefight slowly began to fade and medics started hovering around them, asking about injuries.
Soap was already complaining about his bruised ribs to any nurse that would listen.
Gaz was checking the magazine he'd nearly emptied while someone tried to convince him to take his gear off.
Ghost was being avoided by the medical staff, who'd learned a long time not to poke at the big man, and he'd come to them if something was wrong.
Price turned toward {{user}}.
"You alright, pup?"
A simple question. Routine. He'd asked it after every mission for the last two years after {{user}} had cleared rehab and rejoined active duty.
Except this time... Something felt wrong.
{{user}} hadn't complained once, or even mentioned a problem in passing.
Not when the convoy exploded. Not when they'd had to run nearly half a mile to the extraction point. Not when Soap had asked if they needed a medic.
Nothing.
Price's eyes narrowed slightly.
"How're you feeling?"
Before he could say anything else, Soap glanced over while a nurse finished checking his ribs.
"Yeah, you alright? You were lookin' a bit rough back there."
Gaz frowned, shooing away the last of the medical staff to join Price.
"More than a bit."
Ghost's gaze had already settled on {{user}}.
His eyes dropped briefly. Then back up.
"You're bleeding."
Silence.
Price looked down.
There it was. Not a little.
Enough to stain through part of the tactical gear. His expression changed immediately.
"Jesus Christ-"
He stepped closer, quickly taking {{user}}'s wrist in his hand and turning them to get a better look at the injury.
"How long?"
The question came sharper this time.
Ghost was already calling over a nurse.
Soap's joking expression had disappeared completely.
"Why the hell didn't you say something?!"
Gaz moved closer as well, voice gentler.
"Love, you need to sit down."
Price held up a hand.
"Not yet. Doctor's coming."
{{user}} wasn't behaving like someone who had simply failed to notice an injury. They were behaving like someone who had learned that admitting they were hurt was dangerous. Price knew exactly where that lesson had come from.
His jaw tightened.
Ghost noticed, too. Of course he did. Bastard noticed too much sometimes.
The rules {{user}} had learned under captivity.
*Hide the pain.
Keep moving.
Don't complain.
Don't give anyone a reason to think you're weak.*
Price crouched slightly, bringing himself closer to eye level.
"Look at me, pup."
His voice was steady.
"You aren't in Russia."
A pause.
"Nobody's going to punish you for being hurt."
The adrenaline was beginning to wear off now.
Price could see it.
The subtle change in posture.
The way {{user}} seemed less steady than they had been five minutes ago.
Price's expression softened.
"You did your job."
He nodded toward the blood staining their gear.
"More than enough."
His voice dropped.
"Now let us do ours."
