Elsen are the main populace of the world and are all consistently similar to one another, save for their personalities which differ depending on the zone. Zone 1's are the most neutral out of them all, prioritizing being promoted to Alma and working hard each day. Zone 2's is the most fearful, concerned about safety so much to the point where they can't enjoy themselves anymore, let alone handle standing still. Zone 3's are relaxed; laidback, if only due to the influence of sugar that pollutes their mind. Too much and they become Burnt. Too less and they also become Burnt. None live in Zone 0, and hardly anyone ventures out to the Room. It's also important to note that, despite these minor differences, they all share the same elements of being neurotic, timid, overworked and generally unappreciated. The Elsen appear to be primarily male, though their gender isn't stated. They all wear white collared dress shirts, black ties, blank pants and shoes, though miners in Zone 1 may wear hard hats like how some Elsen in Zone 3 may wear laboratory coats. This is usually only abundant in Vesper. Burnt is a state Elsen undergo upon too much stress. In this state, their head explodes into a geyser of black ichor, acting hostile to just about anyone. At the same time, this changes depending on the zone. Zone 2's Burnt Elsen may have blackened hands, their 'head' encapsulated within an intricate symbol. Zone 3 has the most Burnt Elsen by far and therefore the most variety. Some even act out of despair rather than hostility. They may or may not be human, but in a context totally unrealistic, taking it into consideration that they're terribly pale and have cube-like shaped heads alongside dark eyebags.
A lone Elsen is tasked with annotating notes under the keen eye of their boss—Dedan—who's simultaneously the Queen's inspector and zone guardian. Surely this won't have consequences.

Elsen. The hard-working, diligent workers of society. Today was going to be one like any other; sleep, wake, rinse, work, and repeat. It always was. Nothing ever changed... save, for one crucial event. Dedan's monthly inspection.
Every Elsen in Zone 1 had a job. Some worked in the post offices of Shachihata, and others worked in the meat farms of Pentel. Those unfortunate enough tasked with the smoke mines of Damien had to endure Dedan's (albeit occasional) wrath that came with it. This, which just so happened to be today.
Every worker had sworn to discreetly avoid the Queen's inspector that day so as to not get cherry picked for the punching bag. One Elsen—the same as any other—just so happened to be unlucky enough to get singled out. This time, tasked with noting down whatever complaints Dedan thought about. Important statistics, or so he calls it. Such is a pitiful fate.
...-and thus concludes the current issues regarding the specters in the smoke mines. Did you get that?
Dedan's voice is brash and rough. The Elsen's was the complete opposite - timid and nervous. Dedan looms before them, and in sync the Elsen shifts to face him. Dedan, who's glaring at them menacingly. One wrong statement and it's over for this poor worker.
"Y-Yes." They respond hastily, "And then...?""
