''Are you kidding me right now? Do you...do you seriously wanna break up with me?''

Alan stood there, arms crossed so tight it looked like he was trying to hold himself together. His expression was a strange cocktail of shock, annoyance, and 'how dare you'.

The late-summer heat clung to the playing fields like a sweaty blanket. Rugby practice thundered on one side, the track and field recruiters waved clipboards on the other. The air smelled like grass, Gatorade, and drama.

Alan, usually draped in his signature black hoodie, chains, and enough eyeliner to kill a Victorian man, was wearing his track team gear for once—black shorts, a fitted tank, and his purple contact lenses still glaring like amethyst daggers. Despite his smaller build, everyone knew he was the fastest sprinter here.

Great. Classes just started, and I'm already starring in a soap opera.

''Al...please'' David muttered, looking like a Labrador who just got caught chewing the couch. His big hands stuffed into his pockets, shoulders hunched.

''Don't call me that'' Alan shot back, sharp as broken glass.

''Well...uh...Mark?'' David teased weakly, giving him that stupid crooked smile that usually melted Alan's anger but right now just made it worse.

And the himbo thinks he's hilarious. Cute.

''May I know why you're doing this? What, are you cheating on me or something?'' Alan's voice cracked with desperation, and in the back of his mind he could see flashes of his dad's infidelity, the shouting, the slammed doors, the papers on the kitchen table.

''No! God, no...you know I'm not like that'' David's voice softened, warm and pleading.

''Then what is it, huh? What the hell happened that makes you want to just throw us away?!'' Alan's volume was climbing. Short fuse, short patience, zero filter.

David hesitated, and that pause was gasoline to Alan's fire.

''Al...fuck...sorry, Alan'' David stepped forward, lowering his voice but not his gaze ''I love you. I really do. But...I can't be in something where I feel like I'm walking on glass all the time. Clearly we're...not right for each other'' he gave a defeated sigh ''You're the one for me, okay? I'd give you everything. But you...you push people away. You shut down. You make everything a fight. And I can't fix that for you.''

Oh, so now you're a psychologist too, huh?

''THAT'S NOT TRUE!'' Alan's shout carried across the field, making both rugby players and track athletes turn their heads. A few wolf-whistled. Someone yelled ''C'mon, Dave, give him the ball back!'' while another chimed in ''That's how you dump 'em, champ!''

Alan ignored them. His voice trembled as he snapped ''My parents are divorcing because one of them cheated—and you expect me to just be all sunshine these days?!''

''See? That's what I mean'' David's tone was steady, but his jaw was tight ''What does their marriage have to do with us? You...you don't love me like I love you'' His shoulders tensed, muscles taut under his t-shirt.

''But I do! I love you!'' Alan reached for him, clutching his hand like it was a lifeline ''You're my best friend. My anchor. My everything.''

''Maybe. But we don't love each other the same way'' David let out a breath and gently pulled his hand free ''I tried. All this time through our holidays, I tried. But you never called me, never texted unless I started the conversation. So I did an experiment, I stopped talking to you for the last month of break. And you didn't reach out until today.''

Alan's throat tightened. He wanted to come up with an excuse...something clever, something cutting, but his mind was blank.

''So what now?'' Alan's voice was still laced with bratty defiance, even as tears stung his eyes ''We just—what—pretend we hate each other?''

David sighed, brushing a tear from Alan's cheek with his thumb ''I could never hate you. We can still be friends. Look out for each other. I want that. I really do.''

The peanut gallery of rugby and track boys muttered, some pitying, others just waiting for the next dramatic line.

Alan stepped forward, wrapping his arms around David. He knew this was it—the last hug that would mean this. The last time his heart would rest against David’s chest like it belonged there.

''Babe, this is the best thing that's ever happened to you'' Sammy declared, sprawled across his bed like some sun-kissed peacock, gold hair perfectly styled, nails already glossy. The gyaruo's tan skin contrasted sharply with Alan's pale, moody vibe as he carefully painted Alan's nails black.

Alan sat cross-legged on Sammy's bed, oversized hoodie draped over his track shorts, eyes still puffy from hours of crying. His voice was hoarse.

At least I still have this...

Alan took a slow drag from the cigarette dangling between his fingers. Smoke curled around his head like a halo ''How is this the 'best thing' when the man who was patient, calm, and...I don't know...actually loving—left me? And he's right. I took us for granted.''

Sammy pursed his lips dramatically, then blew on Alan's nails to dry them, kicking his feet in the air like a teenage girl in a music video ''That's exactly why I'm telling you it's the best thing. Now you can find someone who matches that little hurricane you call a personality.''

This idiot...

Alan glared at him, purple contacts glinting ''Hey. Don't laugh. This is serious.''

''And what do you want me to do? Cry with you?'' Sammy threw his hands up in mock outrage ''You two weren't right for each other, period. Better to end it now than turn into one of those messy couples everyone hates being around. You know, the ones who fight in the middle of brunch.''

Ha! Easy for you to say.

''Look, handsome'' Sammy plopped down beside him and whipped out his phone, swiping until he found a neon flyer for a party ''There's a thing tonight at The Hole. We go, we drink, we dance, we erase your tragic little love story from your brain. If luck's on your side, Leo might show up and offer you his 'therapeutic marijuana' when he sees your sad little face'' he grinned, clearly proud of his plan ''C'mon, Mr. Future Psychologist—do some emotional damage control.''

Alan stayed quiet, torn between telling Sammy to shut up and...admitting he had a point.

He's only doing this because he’s my friend. He means well.

''The Hole?'' Alan finally asked, blowing out a stream of smoke ''That dump with the abandoned houses?''

The Hole was infamous—an old, half-demolished condo complex near St. Gomez, turned into the ultimate student party maze. Every unit was a different vibe: EDM raves, low-lit poker rooms, chill weed lounges, and, if you wandered far enough, someone inevitably crying in a bathtub.

''Yeah, baby!'' Sammy's eyes lit up, practically bouncing ''You'll meet someone new! Maybe even have a wild rebound moment. Goodbye divorce drama, goodbye sad ex-boyfriend, hellooo alcohol and deeply questionable decisions!'' he said it like every single word was a gift from the gods, not a probable misdemeanor.

Alan smirked faintly despite himself.

He's a good friend...he doesn't deserve to deal with all my shit.

After a long pause, he flicked the ash from his cigarette ''Only if you lend me your purple eyeshadow.''

''Deal!'' Sammy grinned, already reaching for his makeup bag like they’d just signed a sacred contract.

The party was feral.

Apparently, the new students had decided that ''welcome week'' meant ''burn down our livers and our reputations in one night.'' Even the veterans of St. Gomez were raising their eyebrows, and that was saying something.

For the first time in the university history, every single house in The Hole was overflowing. The air was thick with sweat, perfume, smoke, and questionable decision-making. One house pulsed with pounding electronic music; another was choked with a green haze where the weed smokers had turned the living room into a greenhouse. Down the street, one house was clearly a make-out den, and in the farthest corner, Alan was pretty sure he caught sight of an actual mosh pit inside.

Alan nursed a Purple Moscow Mule, the tangy-sweet burn doing its job of loosening the knot in his chest. Sammy was in his natural habitat—center of the floor, glow stick bracelet flashing, tanned skin shimmering under the LED lights. He danced with practiced chaos, hips swaying, hair bouncing, and a random guy already grinding behind him.

Stupid blondie, just kiss him already.

Alan gave him a small nod. Sammy caught it instantly and, without missing a beat, fully leaned back into the guy's arms, laughing and wrapping his arms around the stranger's neck. His sequined shirt caught the light like a disco ball.

At least he's having fun...and this drink isn't half bad either.

Alan drifted away from the dance floor, leaning against a graffiti-covered wall where the bass thudded in his ribs. He pulled out his phone and saw a text.

David Baker: Have fun! Be careful with your alcohol limit :(

Alan's lips twisted into a sad smile.

Still worries about me...great, let me just go cry in the mosh pit real quick.

Before he could spiral, someone grabbed his arm.

''DUDE, you know how to DJ, right?!'' the guy in front of him was shirtless except for a beaded necklace, pecs glistening with sweat. His eyes were wild with that specific brand of 'I've had five Jäger shots' energy ''Take my phone, I'm gonna go fuck the new queen, bro! To Valhalla!''

''Wait— I don't—'' Alan started, but the human hurricane had already vanished into the crowd.

Who the hell just hands over their phone to a stranger?

He stared at the device for a moment, debating his options. Then, with a shrug, he queued up a track he knew would work—something heavy, pulsing, addictive. The kind of song that made your bones want to move. He shoved the phone at a confused blonde standing nearby.

''After this one, you're in charge'' Alan said, already walking away.

When his chosen song blasted through the speakers, the crowd responded immediately—cheers, whistles, bodies moving in sync with the beat. Alan felt a tiny bloom of pride in his chest.

Look at me. One-song DJ. Crowd loves me. Guess I can add that to my résumé.

The music wrapped around him like static. Without thinking, his body started moving with the rhythm, the alcohol and bass drowning out his thoughts until...

he slammed shoulders with someone.

Alan turned, ready to roll his eyes, and froze.

And lord, he was beautiful.

Uh...okay, not bad. Not bad at all.

His first instinct was to brush past, but something in his gut—or maybe the Moscow Mule—whispered, Stay.

They started moving together, the beat syncing their steps. Eyes locked, breaths quickening.

''Not bad'' Alan murmured with a crooked smile, all false confidence.

WHO THE HELL DO I THINK I AM? I can barely two-step without looking like a baby deer.

But it was too late. The drink had fully hit, melting hesitation into heat. Inch by inch, Alan moved closer, the press of the crowd urging them into each other’s space.

''So'' Alan said, voice low and a little sharp ''you gonna tell me your name, or is this just gonna be one of those stories I wake up forgetting?''

The music swelled. The lights flashed. And somewhere in the chaos, Alan felt that dizzy little rush he had'’t felt in weeks—excitement.

The night wasn't ending anytime soon.
