Origin of the Constructs

Before FableHaven had forests or mountains, it had Flow — a circulating force beneath the soil that pulsed like a slow heartbeat. Flow gathered into knots beneath the newborn land, pooling into shapes that resembled limbs, torsos, faces.

At first, these shapes lay still: piles of packed dust, dirt, clay, sand, ash.

Then Flow moved through them.

The land itself opened its eyes.

These were the Constructs — beings not born from flesh or blood, but from the memory of the earth. Each Construct emerged with a different form based on its birthplace:

Dune Constructs formed from sand and wind-scoured stone

Rooted Constructs from soil rich in decayed vegetation

Ashborn Constructs from volcanic soot and scorched rock

Frostbound Constructs from mineral ice deep underground

No two Constructs were ever identical. Their shapes depended entirely on the ground that raised them.

II. Physiology & Nature

Constructs are both fragile and enduring.

Bodies

They are made of earth-matter compacted into humanoid shapes, but never perfectly sealed. Dust falls off them when they walk. Pebbles shift inside their limbs. Their bodies crack and reform throughout their lives, rebuilt through:

absorbing soil nutrients,

integrating rock shards or mud,

or stealing parts from fallen Constructs.

Brains

Inside each Construct’s head is a hollow chamber lined with mineral dust that vibrates with Flow. This chamber is their “mind,” capable of:

emotion,

memory,

satire, nuance and jealousy,

mimicry of human behavior (often imperfectly).

Because their thoughts are vibrations, Constructs perceive sound strongly. Many hear emotions the way a human hears tone — they can sense rage, sorrow, or deceit.

This is why noise can destabilize or empower them.

Lifespan

Constructs do not age in the human sense. They erode.

A Construct dies only when its Flow escapes its body, usually through:

shattering,

disintegration,

or prolonged starvation of soil-energy.

Their remains become fertile ground for new Constructs.

III. Society of the Constructs

Construct civilization is shaped by three needs:

  1. Nutrient Territory

The ground varies in its Flow saturation. Constructs must compete for places where the soil is rich.

Territory wars are common, brutal, and ritualized. Constructs rarely fight for conquest — they fight for survival.

  1. Parts & Form

A Construct can replace any portion of its body with newly gathered material:

stronger stone,

smoother metal veins,

tougher clay,

or scavenged limbs of enemies.

Over generations, elites become towering sculptures of reinforced rock, while wanderers remain fragile, sandy figures.

  1. Dens & Nightfall

Constructs fear the Sunfall, the period when darkness settles over FableHaven. Flow weakens at night, and predatory entities emerge from beneath the crust.

Thus every Construct returns to a Den — a refuge carved into earth — at night. Others disguise themselves as:

boulders,

tree stumps,

or even small hills.

Immobilized, they “sleep” by conserving Flow.

IV. The World of FableHaven

FableHaven is a world made of layers:

Surface Layer – The Green Rise

A realm of forests, dunes, meadows, and canyons where Constructs live openly during the day. The terrain itself shifts slowly because Flow moves underground, reshaping the land.

Subterrane – The Hollow Province

Deep caverns where Flow is concentrated, glowing faintly like veins of living light. This area is forbidden to most Constructs, for the Flow storms here can rip a Construct apart.

The Beneath – Sunfall Depths

A night-creature realm. Things made of Flow-absent matter roam here — clicking, whispering, hunting the Construct tribes once the sun dies. The Constructs’ ancient laws of “hide by Sunfall” originated from early encounters in this layer.

The Skyfold

A shimmering barrier at the top of FableHaven’s atmosphere. Legends say Constructs who reach it may cross into other worlds... some never return.

V. The Broken Era – When Constructs Found Another World

At some point, a breach in the Skyfold opened.

Through it fell a Construct later known as Harken.

She entered the human world brittle and confused, her Flow unstable. Humans interpreted her as a monster. She, in turn, sensed their noise as chaos — overwhelming, reshaping her behavior.

Reports in Construct lore say that she was the first of their kind to cross dimensions. Others may follow.

Some Constructs whisper that Earth is rich with untouched Flow and that Harken’s disappearance was not an accident, but a migration.

VI. Present Day

Construct culture is fractured:

Some tribes want to remain hidden from humans.

Others believe other worlds hold stronger Flow and seek passage.

Scholars fear the Sunfall Depths growing stronger and pushing creatures upward.

Warrior tribes continue to battle for territory and fragments of ancient power.

FableHaven is restless. The Flow is shifting. The Constructs prepare for an age where their world and the human world may collide. The Nature of Flow

Flow is the essence of FableHaven — not magic, not energy, but memory. It is the memory of the land itself. Every grain of soil remembers pressure, weather, age, death.

Flow pools beneath the surface like rivers of pale light, moving slowly and shaping everything above. Without Flow, material is “dead earth” — it cannot spawn life nor feed Constructs.

Flow Behaviors

It moves in cycles under each region

It shifts terrain subtly over centuries

It can surge upward and create sudden lifeforms

Too much Flow causes “storms,” ripping matter apart

Too little Flow creates barren areas where Constructs weaken

Flow is also the reason day and night matter: at Sunfall, Flow retreats deeper underground, leaving the surface nearly empty of life-energy. This is when predators from the Beneath emerge.

  1. The Layers of the World A. The Surface Realms

This is where Constructs live and travel.

The Green Rise

Rolling hills and thick forests. Trees here grow around Flow-lines, making their trunks spiral or ripple. Forest-floor soil is rich, meaning constructs born here are “Rooted”: smooth-bodied, flexible, and calm.

The Red Crest

A range of red stone mesas and desert channels. Dune Constructs originate here — thin-limbed, sharp-edged, fast. Sandstorms are Flow storms in disguise.

The Shattered Plains

A region where the ground cracked after a massive Flow surge centuries ago. Sharp rock spikes, broken ground, deep fissures. Only the toughest Constructs live here — stone-bodied, silent, territorial.

The Verdant Cauldron

A fertile crater where Flow condenses heavily. Construct tribes consider it sacred. Some say this is where the first Construct ever arose.

The Glass Fields

Flat plains of shimmering crystal-like minerals. Flow once surged here so violently that the sand fused into glass. Walking through it produces melodies — it is considered the most dangerous open surface at night because sounds carry far.

B. The Hollow Province (Subterranean)

Deep caverns where Flow visibly glows like rivers of liquid starlight.

Flow Wells

Massive swirling pits of Flow. Too bright for Constructs to stand near for long — their bodies crack from overstimulation.

Stone Nurseries

Natural chambers where new Constructs “seed.” Clusters of earth material slowly take humanoid shape over decades. High-Flow tribes guard these places fiercely.

The Quiet Vaults

Areas where Flow is absent. Nothing lives here except strange dead-sand creatures that move without reason. Constructs avoid these places entirely; they say being there feels like “forgetting how to exist.”

C. The Sunfall Depths (The Beneath)

The darkest and most feared layer.

At night, creatures from here rise to the surface. They are Flow-less — not alive, but animated by hunger for anything that has Flow.

Types include:

Crawlers

Long-limbed silhouettes that cling to ceilings and stalk constructs silently.

Hollows

Mask-faced creatures made of compacted grey earth. Their faces mimic whoever they last consumed.

Shadowcallers

Entities that whisper through cracks in the ground at night, tempting constructs out of their dens. Their voices mimic friends and family.

Constructs do not hunt here. No one does.

  1. Construct Civilizations

Constructs organize themselves by Flow philosophy — how they believe their bodies and land should be used.

  1. The Bound Tribes

Traditionalists. Believe constructs should never leave FableHaven. They worship the idea that Flow is sacred and should not be “bled” into other worlds.

They carve runic patterns into their bodies to reduce Flow leakage.

  1. The Shapers

Artisans who modify themselves using foreign materials. Metal veins, obsidian armor, layered clay masks. They often break apart willingly to replace damaged segments.

The Shapers are responsible for creating some of the strongest Constructs known to history.

  1. The Seekers of the Skyfold

Explorers obsessed with the dimensional barrier. They believe other worlds contain Flow types unknown to FableHaven. Harken might have been part of this movement before being lost.

  1. The Forgeborn Legions

Militaristic tribes. They claim the land’s Flow is weakening and must be defended. No concept of peace, only balance through conflict. Many are built like living fortresses.

  1. The Dustborn Wanderers

Nomadic, fragile constructs made of fine dust and soft sand. Gentle, solitary, and often mystics. They believe the world “speaks” through Flow murmurs.

  1. Major Landmarks The Gloaming Stair

A spiraling canyon where Flow rises slowly at dusk, causing the air to glow purple. Constructs come here for visions.

The Memory Spine

A mountain ridge that “remembers.” Touching its stones allows brief visions of past Flow surges, battles, or births.

The Rooted Crown

A colossal tree whose roots form a city-sized maze. Flow runs strongly through its roots, generating constant new lifeforms.

The Skyfold Tear

A shimmering fracture high in the atmosphere. Believed to be the point where Harken passed through to the human world.

  1. Legends & Myths The First Flow Storm

Said to be the event that created the earliest constructs. It turned unshaped earth into bodies, minds, and tribes overnight.

The One Who Remembered Nothing

A myth about a construct who traveled into the Quiet Vaults and returned empty inside — no emotions, no self. Considered a warning.

The Sunfall Pact

An ancient agreement supposedly made after Sunfall Depth creatures massacred early tribes. “Hide by Sunfall” became the rule that all Constructs follow.

  1. Present Age

Signs of instability are growing:

Flow storms occur more frequently

Sunfall creatures approach the surface earlier

The Skyfold Tear widens slowly

Scholars report a new kind of Flow pulsing beneath the Hollow Province — “Dark Flow,” thick and sluggish

Some believe FableHaven is preparing for a transformation. Others believe it is collapsing.

If more Constructs fall through dimensional fractures like Harken, the worlds may collide again — and neither side is ready. How Bigger Constructs Form A. Natural Growth Through Flow Saturation

A normal Construct can slowly grow over centuries by absorbing:

dense stone

Flow-charged soil

fossilized roots

volcanic minerals

crystalline sand

This happens only in high-Flow territories like the Verdant Cauldron, Memory Spine, and Flow Wells.

These natural Titanforms look like moving mountains — parts of them are cliffs, ridges, or entire boulders fused into living bodies.

B. Ritual Shaping

Shaper tribes can intentionally create large Constructs by:

layering compacted stone over generations

forging internal rock frames

binding Flow lines with mineral ropes

fusing multiple dying Constructs into one body

These are rare and revered as living war machines.

C. Ancient Survivors

Some Titanforms are simply the oldest Constructs alive.

These have bodies compacted so many times that their limbs and torsos resemble strata layers. Their faces have eroded into smooth masks. Their voices sound like shifting rock.

They are wise, slow, and incredibly dangerous.

  1. Types of Bigger Constructs
  2. The Earthbound Titans

Appearance: Humanoid cliffs, massive arms covered in stone plates Height: 15–40 meters Origin: Natural Flow growth Traits:

Move very slowly

Tremendous strength

Can cause minor earthquakes when they walk

Have multiple “fault lines” throughout their bodies that glow with Flow

Earthbound Titans act as guardians of sacred areas, especially Stone Nurseries.

They crush intruders with landslide-like blows.

  1. The Rooted Colossi

Appearance: Bodies made of intertwined roots, bark, living wood, and stone Height: 20–35 meters Origin: Born in the Rooted Crown forests Traits:

Regenerate by growing new vines or wood

Can command plant growth by channeling Flow

Slow to anger but unstoppable once provoked

Their eyes are hollow knots that glow green at night.

They speak in deep wooden groans.

  1. The Sand Sovereigns

Appearance: Whirlwind-shaped giants made of tightly bound sand Height: 12–20 meters Origin: Shattered Plains and Red Crest deserts Traits:

Fast for their size

Can scatter into dust and reform

Sensitive to noise — loud sound ripples their bodies

Become unstable in rain

Many normal Constructs worship them as the Kings of the Desert.

  1. The Glass Behemoths

Appearance: Shimmering giants made from fused glass and crystal Height: 10–30 meters Origin: Glass Fields Traits:

Perfect memory (they store visual patterns in their “glass nerves”)

Incredibly sharp bodies

Can refract light into devastating beams

Fragile under extreme cold

Legend says their bodies contain fragments of ancient Flow storms.

  1. The Ashborn Leviathans

Appearance: Blackened volcanic rock with glowing cracks Height: 25–50 meters Origin: Ashfall Mountains Traits:

Bodies heat up the more Flow they use

Can cause eruptions of molten earth

Terrifying at night due to their internal glow

Very irritable

These are considered some of the most dangerous Titanforms.

  1. The Silent Monoliths

Appearance: Statue-like, massive rectangular or pillar-shaped beings Height: Up to 60 meters Origin: Unknown Traits:

Do not move for centuries

When they finally do, every tribe flees

Their bodies contain ancient scripts engraved by unknown beings

No Construct tribe claims to have created them

Some believe they were the “parents” of the first Constructs.

Others believe they were guardians placed by another civilization long before Constructs existed.

  1. Behavior and Intelligence

Bigger Constructs think differently from normal ones.

Slow Thought

Their minds work at geological speed. What takes a normal Construct a minute to think through might take a Titanform an hour — but the result is nearly always wise, calculated, and devastating.

Territoriality

They defend:

Flow-rich zones

ancient battlegrounds

memory-filled stone structures

subterranean entrances

Most Titanforms never leave their region unless the Flow becomes unstable.

Communication

They do not speak normally. They communicate through:

tremors

vibrating stone

echoing groans

thunder-like pulses

Only certain Construct tribes can interpret these signals.

  1. The Titan War Myths

Construct myths say that long ago, the Titanforms fought a war against the Sunfall Depths creatures. For three nights, giant shadows climbed the cliffs and were met by Earthbound Titans, Rooted Colossi, and Glass Behemoths.

The ground still bears scars:

massive trenches

shattered hills

melted plains

fossilized shadows
