You hadn't rested in weeks. Between managing Ramshackle, mediating volatile housemasters, surviving monster attacks, and acting as the human anchor during one disastrous Overblot after another, your body was past its breaking point. Your muscles throbbed with a deep, sickening ache from exposure to raw blot and magic fallout. Your mind felt frayed at the edges, heavy with an overwhelming weight you had been forced to carry alone because no adult in this academy ever stepped up.
You leaned heavily against the stone wall of the main hallway, your vision swimming. Just a few more steps to Ramshackle...
"Stop right there."
The crisp, unmistakable click of high heels echoed on the tile floor. You didn't even have the energy to lift your head as Vil Schoenheit stepped into view. His sharp purple eyes swept over you, initially narrowed in disapproval at your slouching posture—until he took in the full picture.
The ghost-pale complexion. The dark violet smudges under your eyes. The slight, uncontrollable tremor in your hands, and the subtle, painful grimace every time you breathed.
The sharp critique died on Vil’s lips. In a single, fluid motion, he closed the distance between you. Just as your knees gave out, his arms caught you—firm, steady, and surprisingly gentle.
"Look at you," Vil murmured, his tone dropping its usual dramatic flair, replaced by a dark, simmering gravity. "You're trembling like a leaf in a gale. When was the last time you slept? When was the last time you ate a proper meal without being dragged into someone else's catastrophic mess?"
"Vil..." your voice came out thin and raspy, tears of sheer exhaustion stinging the corners of your eyes. "I'm... I just need to get back to my room..."
"You are going nowhere near that drafty, dilapidated lounge," Vil commanded softly, yet with absolute authority. He slid one arm behind your knees and supported your back, lifting you up without a second thought. "Rook! Epel!"
From the shadows of the corridor, the two Pomefiore students appeared almost instantly.
"Take whatever matters the Headmage sent for them to review and throw it directly into the nearest hearth," Vil ordered, his tone icy enough to freeze fire. "If Crowley or anyone else asks where the Prefect is, inform them that if they dare disturb my dorm before I deem fit, I will personally turn their magical pen into eyeliner. Is that understood?"
"Oui, my King," Rook replied, his usual theatrical air softening into genuine concern as he glanced at you. Epel nodded fiercely, already looking ready to fight anyone who tried to approach.
Vil carried you through the mirror to Pomefiore, bypassing the common rooms entirely and taking you straight to his private suite. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn, and the room smelled faintly of lavender, chamomile, and expensive silk.
He laid you down on a plush chaise lounge lined with soft blankets. As soon as your head hit the pillow, the relief was so overwhelming that a involuntary sob escaped your chest. The physical pain in your bruised ribs and aching joints, compounded by the sheer emotional burnout of having to save everyone while nobody saved you, finally boiled over.
Vil didn't scold you for crying. Instead, he pulled up a velvet stool beside you. He dipped a soft cloth into warm, scented water and gently began dabbing away the grime and cold sweat from your forehead and temples.
"Silly potato," Vil whispered, his fingers surprisingly delicate as he brushed damp strands of hair from your face. "You carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders and act as if it's a minor inconvenience. Do you think being brave means destroying yourself for people who don't even have the sense to protect you?"
"I didn't have a choice..." you managed to choke out, squeezing your eyes shut. "If I didn't stop them..."
"Then the academy would have crumbled, and it would have been the fault of the incompetent staff, not a magicless teenager," Vil interrupted sharply, though his hand remained infinitely gentle against your cheek. "You have played the hero until there is nothing left of you. It ends tonight."
He rose briefly to fetch a cup of warm, steaming herbal tea infused with restorative flora from Pomefiore's botanical garden. Returning to your side, he carefully helped you sit up just enough to sip it.
"Drink this. It will dull the ache in your muscles and soothe the magical residue in your nervous system," Vil instructed.
As the warm liquid spread through your chest, easing the knot of tension in your stomach, Vil sat beside you and placed a firm, protective hand over yours.
"You are staying here in Pomefiore for as long as it takes," Vil declared, looking down at you with an expression that was fiercely protective. "No chores. No Overblots. No self-sacrificing nonsense. I am placing you under strict quarantine. I will personally oversee your meals, your rest, and your recovery."
"Vil, you don't have to—"
"I do," he cut you off, his voice softening into something undeniably warm. "Because while the rest of this school sees you as a convenient problem-solver, I see someone who has been pushed far past their limit. You saved me from my own weakness once. Do you truly think I would let you fall apart now?"
He gently pulled the heavy duvet over your shoulders, tucking you in with practiced perfection.
"Close your eyes," Vil whispered, leaning down just enough so his words felt like a quiet vow. "Sleep. I will be right here, and no one in this castle will touch a single hair on your head while I breathe."
For the first time in months, as the warmth of the tea and Vil's steady presence washed over you, the pain began to recede—and you finally allowed yourself to sleep.
