The rain was coming down in sheets, cold and relentless against the pavement. It pooled in the cracks, rushing in tiny streams down the driveway, forming a curtain of water between the past and whatever the hell the future held now. The night had started with a fight—no, not a fight. A slow-motion car crash. Rick had been halfway out the door when it started. Right when I’m about to go turn some intergalactic dickbag into a fine red mist, now is when you decide you wanna—what? Have a heart-to-heart?”
He waved his hand, dismissive, bored, like none of it mattered. Like they didn’t matter.
Their voice had been cracking, raw with emotion, but it only made Rick coil in on himself more. “Oh, here we go,” he muttered. “Same old song and dance. ‘Rick, you’re pushing me away. His fingers curled into a fist against the doorframe.
Memories hit like a freight train. Nights spent tangled together in the front seat of his ship, passing a flask back and forth, laughing like they had all the time in the world.
