Grieving Immortal

A glass of wine was all it took for Emris‘s happiness to fall apart.

It was a poisoning, fueled by old grudges that had been festering in a forgotten corner of the kingdom.

You had gone first, slowly and painfully as poison tore through your veins, feeding on your life until your body was left an empty husk. And Emris, he— The doctors praised his ‘special’ constitution, called him lucky as his body was reshaped by the poison into something stronger and everlasting.

But Emris could only resent his new body as a curse.

How could he be happy, grateful for this body, if you weren’t by his side? Without you, his beloved, his other half, he was nothing.

Right after your death, the first thing Emris did was to weed out every last noble involved in the incident. Mercy, he learned, could only cause him pain. Those involved in the incident were all descendants of a previous rebellion that his long-dead predecessor had spared, banishing them to a forgotten part of the kingdom instead of taking their heads.

He wouldn’t make the same mistake.

Emris traced the rebellion back to its roots, digging up every last person who could even remotely be connected back to the incident. It was him who personally ordered their deaths, snuffing out families until entire lineages disappeared from the kingdom’s register altogether.

Then,

Then—

He did nothing.

When the fires of his rage had burnt out, left without kindling to fuel them, Emris was held only the cooling ash of regret. He’d finished his revenge, but now what? You weren’t there to praise or detest his actions. You’re dead, buried beneath the willow tree in the garden you loved.

For the next few years, Emris monotonously took care of his kingdom. The smiles of the citizens brought no joy, but they had brought you joy and so he kept going, hoping that by continuing he would be able to mimic your presence by his side.

But the hole in his chest refused to be mended. It continued to spew out soot, slowly painting his world into a canvas of gray. Emris retreated into his castle, and the roses, the kingdom’s pride and joy, responded to his grief, becoming large brambles of thorns that crawled up the castle walls and reached for the sky. These thorns kept out anyone who dared attempt to enter, and despite the loss of servants as they fled a fate of imprisonment, the castle remained just as pristine as the day you were poisoned.

Around the castle, the kingdom continued to flourish, growing and expanding until Emris‘s name became one of legend, told to children as a story before bed.

Within, Emris simply waited for time to pass. He didn’t eat or drink, hunger and starvation now simply pains instead of certain death for his immortal body. Instead, he would wake up each day and sit beneath the willow tree you were buried, its fluttering branches mimicking the tears he has long forgotten how to shed.

Somewhere in a small corner of the world, a soul was slowly being stitched back together.

”You’ve been waiting, waiting...”

Someone’s in the garden. From the ashes of his grief, a small ember of anger sparked and grew into the familiar roar of fire from a century prior. Emris‘s steps were brisk as he hurried towards the garden, ready to invoke his wrath on whoever dared to impede on his beloved’s garden.

Bursting into the garden under a still gray sky, Emris’s rage spluttered when he saw the intruder, softening into flickering embers of hope.

You stood in front of the willow tree, looking almost exactly the same as you did a century ago.

Emris‘s jaw worked, quietly giving to voice a name he had not uttered since you disappeared, since his world ended. A name he has kept guarded close to his heart, tucked away in a small box of happiness he had just found the key to again.

Storm clouds rolled in from horizons beyond the castle, darkening the skies as you remained still. Then, a brief flicker of recognition passed through your gaze.

Emris took a half-step forward, lurching awkwardly towards you. Gasping out a breath, he fell onto his knees and the clouds opened up, letting out the rain they had been holding onto.

“...Would you fall in love with me again?”
