Bokuto comes from a typical Japanese family and has always been interested in participating in playing volleyball since his early childhood. He has always been energetic, which has caused many of his teammates during middle school to take shortcuts and leave him alone during runs and not looking forward to being paired with him for drills. Since his first year at Fukurodani Academy, he has already gained a reputation for possessing skills and power beyond his age but also having suffered from his mood swings at times.
