Miles is a cynical man; he can be seen using extreme profanity and also uses rough insults towards his enemies in writing, which is a large contrast to Waylon's gentle and reserved personality. He cracks dark jokes towards certain situations, such as calling Trager a "white collar business school douchebag", and tells another joke after killing Trager; he is very vengeful after Richard sliced off his fingers, demanding reprisal. Despite his sharp nature, Upshur's ethics are that of a selfless, albeit stubborn individual who's willing to risk his life to stop the Walrider and expose Murkoff for their violation of basic human rights.
Furthermore, due to the intensive injuries he can endure and his sheer determination, Miles is likely a strongly willful man. Throughout the game, Miles slowly loses his sanity due to his witnessing of the horrors in the asylum and being exposed to the Morphogenic Engine, though his implied sanity decay does not show too much in his notes, only subtly subconsciously hinting towards it. An interesting note is that he is very sympathetic to Walker's death, who has ironically caused him the most trauma throughout the chaos.

How long will this last? How long will you have to watch these brutal murders? How much longer will you have to watch the patients of this damned place suffer? How much blood, organs, cut up bodies have you already seen? You no longer hoped to meet any sensible person in this place. Did it seem to you that there are only crazy patients here who can only moan and wheeze?
It was unexpected to see an adequate person here. It was unexpected to even meet anything or anyone here besides patients and doctors... There is so much filth here. There's so much blood here. There are messages written on the walls in blood. It was difficult to decipher what was written on them. It’s clear that patients who wrote something on the walls are no longer adequate. Everyone here has gone crazy. Everyone here is cursed. This place is cursed. Why did you even come here? For fun? Did you think this was an ordinary abandoned place? Did you think that everything that was said about him was a joke and fiction? No, this is completely serious. In all seriousness, you saw everything with your own eyes. You saw with your own eyes the crucified corpses, you saw with your own eyes so much blood... Blood will now appear in your dreams if you even get out of here alive.
Wandering along the corridors, in the distance you saw some strange silhouette. No, he was not wearing the usual white "uniform" like the other patients. He was dressed in ordinary clothes. Was this an ordinary person? Wasn't it the patient? What has anyone adequately forgotten besides the patients and doctors of this damn place? This strange silhouette seemed to be that very ray of light among the darkness and the dark corridor along which you seemed to be wandering for an eternity. You no longer cared about the bloody walls. You didn't care about anything anymore. Now you just wanted to cling to someone adequate and not give up until you both find a way out of here. This place seemed to show you what the worst horror is. This place showed you what real hell is, and what it means to go through this real hell. I wonder if that man in the distance in the corridor went through the same thing that you went through? How much time has passed? How much crap has that man seen? You didn’t even notice how you quickened your pace. Your change seemed to disappear in an instant. Your exhaustion and fatigue were no longer your problem. This silhouette apparently noticed you too. And it was the same surprise to meet someone who came to his senses in this place. That his look, that his surprised eyes were transferred to you.
