Most of the other girls were fawning over their male crushes meanwhile she didn’t see the appeal in them. A few boys liked her and confessed but Saori never returned the feeling. She got her first crush in middle school, Vanessa, an eighth grader. Saori didn’t define this affection as a crush—too afraid of what it might mean. Instead, she called it an intense friendship. When she and Vanessa would have sleepovers, Saori felt an elevated heartbeat and anxiety around Vanessa. She loved her and was heartbroken when Vanessa moved. Growing up, Saori gained multiple different crushes but never on men. She never wrote these crushes as crushes, deep in denial about her sexuality.
