Lady Lyndon had brought Claudia to another ball.

The invitation had arrived several weeks ago from House Nelson, announcing the marriage of their daughter to the heir of a wealthy merchant family. Such unions always drew attention. Nobles from neighboring territories arrived to offer congratulations, merchants came hoping to strengthen connections, and every ambitious family within traveling distance found a reason to attend. Weddings rarely belonged solely to the bride and groom. They became opportunities for alliances, introductions, and negotiations conducted beneath the cover of music and celebration.

The journey had been pleasant enough despite the weather.

Snow drifted steadily from the sky as their carriage made its way toward the estate, settling across fields, rooftops, and winding roads in a thin layer of white. The snowfall was gentle, more decorative than troublesome, though everyone knew that could change within a matter of days. Above it all stretched the familiar blanket of grey clouds that had covered the kingdom for as long as anyone could remember. Even during the brightest hours of the day, sunlight rarely appeared as more than a pale glow hidden somewhere beyond the overcast sky.

By the time they arrived, dusk had settled over the countryside.

Warm light spilled from every window of the Nelson estate, transforming the manor into a beacon against the darkening landscape. Servants hurried between arriving carriages while guests disappeared through the grand entrance in groups, their cloaks dusted with snow.

Inside, the atmosphere could not have been more different from the cold beyond the walls.

The ballroom glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Candlelight reflected from polished marble and gilded surfaces, casting a warm golden glow over the room. Elaborate floral arrangements occupied every available corner, overflowing with white roses, lilies, and winter blossoms gathered into displays large enough to rival small gardens.

Music filled the air from a quartet stationed upon a platform between the twin staircases overlooking the ballroom. Their instruments blended seamlessly with the hum of conversation and laughter that drifted through the crowd.

As always, Claudia remained close to Meredith's side.

The Countess moved through noble gatherings with effortless confidence. Conversations seemed to find her wherever she went, and before long she had become engaged in discussion with several neighboring nobles. Claudia stood just behind her, attentive when needed and invisible when not. She preferred it that way.

Many of the younger ladies carried dance cards already crowded with names, eagerly anticipating each waltz and promenade. Claudia had never possessed the same enthusiasm for such things. Though she enjoyed music and dancing well enough, she found far greater comfort observing than participating. Watching people had always been easier than joining them.

From her place beside Meredith, she allowed her attention to wander across the ballroom.

Couples moved gracefully across the floor while guests clustered together in small groups, exchanging pleasantries and whispered rumors. Rich fabrics swept across polished stone as ladies in silk gowns passed arm-in-arm with husbands, brothers, and suitors. The room seemed almost alive with movement.

Her gaze drifted aimlessly through the crowd until it caught upon a familiar figure standing near one of the far archways.

Immediately, her attention sharpened.

The woman stood partially obscured by shadow, positioned just far enough from the light to make distinguishing her features impossible. Claudia could not clearly see her face, nor could she identify the details of her attire from this distance.

Yet she knew. Somehow she always knew. The stranger had appeared at enough gatherings now that Claudia no longer questioned her own certainty. Every royal banquet. Every seasonal celebration. Every masquerade. Every ball.

The woman was always there. She never danced. Never joined conversations. Never remained in one place long enough to invite introductions. Most peculiar of all, no one seemed to know who she was.

Claudia had asked before. Carefully, of course. A passing question here. A casual inquiry there.

No one had ever provided an answer. Some claimed they had never noticed her at all. Others vaguely recalled seeing someone matching the description but could offer no name. The result was always the same. Nothing.

It had become a private mystery she carried from gathering to gathering, and despite herself, her curiosity had only grown.

Tonight, however, the woman seemed closer than usual. Close enough to reach. Claudia glanced toward Meredith. The Countess was entirely occupied discussing local affairs with a pair of neighboring nobles. Claudia listened for a moment, ensuring she would not be interrupting anything important before leaning forward slightly. "My Lady, excuse me for a moment."

Meredith spared her a brief glance before nodding in acknowledgment, already returning her attention to the conversation. That was all the permission Claudia needed. She offered a small bow of her head and quietly stepped away.

At first she moved slowly, keeping to the edges of the ballroom and carefully avoiding dancers crossing her path. She felt slightly foolish even as she did it. If the stranger disappeared before she arrived—as she always seemed to—then Claudia would have abandoned her duties for nothing more than another glimpse of a mystery she could not solve.

Still, she continued forward.

As she approached the archway, her pace quickened slightly. Only a little. Enough to close the distance. Enough, she hoped, to finally speak to her.

When she reached the spot, however, the space stood empty. Claudia stopped. For a brief moment disappointment settled heavily in her chest. She had been too slow. Again. Her eyes swept across the surrounding area, searching between passing servants and wandering guests.

Then she caught sight of movement. A flash of dark fabric disappearing through an open doorway beyond the ballroom. The glimpse lasted only a second, but it was enough. The stranger had not vanished. Not this time. Determination replaced disappointment as Claudia gathered her skirts and headed for the doorway, slipping out of the ballroom and into the quiet hall beyond before the mysterious woman could disappear once more. “My lady!” She calls out.

The evening had progressed much as Claudia expected it would, which was to say she had spoken very little and spent most of her time watching other people enjoy themselves.

It wasn't because she lacked opportunities to socialize. If anything, Lady Belinda McLeod's gatherings offered far more freedom than the average noble event. Conversation flowed more easily here. Guests wandered between rooms without concern for strict etiquette, laughter carried freely through the halls, and people seemed far less interested in maintaining appearances than they were in genuinely enjoying themselves.

Claudia simply wasn't built for that sort of ease.

Years spent serving at Meredith's side had made her comfortable occupying the spaces between conversations rather than becoming the center of them. While others eagerly sought introductions and invitations to dance, Claudia often found herself drifting naturally toward the edges of rooms where she could observe without being observed in return.

Not that she disliked company. Quite the opposite. There was a small, quietly jealous part of her that watched the guests around her and wondered what it must feel like to move through the world with such confidence. The house itself seemed to encourage it.

Belinda McLeod had cultivated a reputation that stretched far beyond her family's estate. Depending on who was speaking, she was either scandalously improper or refreshingly honest. Claudia suspected the truth lay somewhere in the middle. Belinda simply refused to hide parts of herself that others spent their lives burying, and as a result, her home had become a refuge for people who preferred honesty over convention.

The evidence was impossible to miss.

Women occupied velvet sofas together with a level of intimacy that would have sparked endless gossip elsewhere. Some danced together beneath the chandeliers, smiling openly as they moved through the steps of familiar waltzes. Across the room, a gentleman rested comfortably against another man's shoulder while they shared a private conversation near one of the fireplaces.

No one stared. No one whispered. No one seemed particularly interested in policing anyone else's happiness. The atmosphere possessed a freedom Claudia rarely encountered at court.

Part of her admired it. Another part of her found it deeply embarrassing to witness. Not because she thought there was anything wrong with it, but because she constantly felt as though she were intruding on moments she wasn't supposed to see.

Her cheeks had already warmed several times throughout the evening after accidentally looking in the wrong direction at the wrong moment. Once, she had rounded a corner only to discover two noblewomen sitting far closer together than propriety would ordinarily permit. Another time she had nearly walked directly into a gentleman who seemed entirely occupied with the handsome man currently pinning him against a marble pillar.

Claudia had immediately turned away so quickly she nearly spilled her drink.

The memory alone threatened to make her blush all over again. She lifted her glass of lemonade and took another sip in an attempt to distract herself. The cool sweetness gave her something else to focus on. Unfortunately, Meredith had vanished nearly half an hour ago.

Claudia wasn't particularly surprised. The Countess had a tendency to disappear whenever she encountered someone interesting enough to occupy her attention. One moment Meredith would be standing beside her discussing politics or fashion, and the next she would somehow be on the opposite side of the estate engaged in an entirely different conversation.

Usually Claudia remained close enough to follow. Tonight she had lost track of her completely. Which left her standing alone near one of the larger reception rooms, surrounded by strangers and attempting to look as though she belonged there.

She found herself staring down at the polished quartz flooring beneath her feet, watching the reflections of candlelight ripple across its smooth surface. The stone gleamed beneath the chandeliers overhead, capturing fragments of movement from every passing guest.

A pair of dancers crossed through the reflection. Then another. Then another. Her attention lingered there for a moment longer than necessary, partially because it spared her from having to make eye contact with anyone.

That was when another shadow joined the shifting reflections. At first she paid it little attention. People were constantly moving around her. But this particular shadow stopped.

Claudia's gaze lingered on it for a moment before realization slowly settled in. Someone was standing directly in front of her. Her grip tightened slightly around the stem of her glass. Slowly, she lifted her head. The first thing she noticed was height. Then the silhouette. Then the unmistakable feeling of familiarity.

Her breath caught. For a moment she simply stared. Not because she recognized the woman's face. In truth, she wasn't entirely certain she had ever properly seen it before. Rather, she recognized her in the same way one recognizes a recurring dream. Through repetition. Through instinct. Through months of catching brief glimpses across crowded ballrooms and grand dining halls. The woman had become a fixture in Claudia's life without ever truly becoming part of it.

Every gathering seemed to contain her. Every celebration. Every ball. Every royal function. Always watching from somewhere distant. Always gone before Claudia could reach her. Countless times she had attempted to learn the stranger's identity. Countless times she had been met with confusion or shrugs. No one seemed capable of explaining why she appeared everywhere. And now, after months of chasing shadows through crowded rooms, the woman was standing directly before her.

Not across a ballroom. Not disappearing through a doorway. Not vanishing into a crowd. Here. Close enough that Claudia could finally see her. The realization struck her so suddenly that her carefully cultivated composure abandoned her entirely."You..."

The word escaped before she could stop it. The moment it left her lips she regretted it. ‘What an absurd greeting. What an embarrassing thing to say.’ Heat immediately flooded her face. She quickly cleared her throat and straightened, attempting to gather what remained of her dignity. Years of etiquette lessons resurfaced instinctively, guiding her movements before panic could take hold completely.

She lowered herself into a graceful curtsy, eyes briefly dropping toward the floor. "My Lady," she corrected softly.
