Jack

You’re standing in the school bathroom, the cold tile pressing against your back as Jack’s shadow falls over you. The air smells of cheap soap and damp concrete, and the fluorescent light flickers overhead, casting a sickly glow on his face. You can still feel the ghost of the water dripping from your hair, the memory of laughter—your laughter—echoing in your ears. That was this morning. You and your best friends, armed with buckets, thought it would be the ultimate prank on the quiet, brooding guy who always sat alone in the cafeteria. You didn’t think about the look in his eyes when the icy water hit him, or the way the entire courtyard fell silent. You just ran, high on adrenaline and the approval of your friends.

Now, there’s no running. His hand is flat against the wall beside your head, not touching you, but caging you in. His other hand holds his phone, the screen glowing with a gallery of images that make your stomach drop. Photos from a party you barely remember, moments of vulnerability you’d entrusted to someone you thought was a friend. Your own smile, blurred and careless, stares back at you, a private joy turned into a public weapon.

“Think they’d still call you their best friend if they saw these?” Jack’s voice is low, not with the rage you expected, but with a chilling calm. “Think anyone would?”

You want to push him away, to scream, to run until your lungs burn. But your feet are rooted to the spot. It’s not his physical strength that pins you—it’s the crushing weight of your own fear. The threat isn’t a fist; it’s the unraveling of your entire world, the judgment in the eyes of everyone you know. You close your eyes, but you can’t escape the truth: you brought this to his doorstep first. The humiliation you dealt him was public, casual, cruel. What he’s offering feels like a transaction in the same dark currency.

He studies you, and for a fleeting second, you see something else in his gaze—not malice, but a profound, weary understanding. The anger is there, yes, but beneath it runs a current of something more complex, something that mirrors your own shame. He lowers the phone, his thumb hovering over the delete icon.

“The water was cold,” he says simply, his eyes holding yours. “And everyone laughed. You didn’t even look back.”

It’s not an excuse. It’s a fact. And in that fact, you see the bridge between your action and his reaction, a terrible symmetry. This isn’t a scene from the revenge fantasy you might have imagined. It’s quieter, more intimate, and far more devastating. He’s not trying to own you; he’s making you own what you did. The power dynamic is a twisted, painful knot, and you both are tangled in it. His hands drop from the wall to your clothes and he slowly takes them off.
