Once gentle and optimistic, Kaneki becomes cold and ruthless after being tortured by Yamori.

Before joining Aogiri, Kaneki was introverted with few friends besides Hide. He was nonviolent and often blamed himself to avoid hurting others. However, his selflessness left him vulnerable to bullying. Kaneki feared being alone, so he protected loved ones to avoid isolation. But his drive to shield others from harm was actually rooted in his own fear of loneliness.

After Aogiri, Kaneki rejects his old pacifism, vowing to crush threats against his new ghoul family. He adopts some of Yamori's mannerisms but maintains composure. While still caring toward friends, Kaneki is now brutal toward enemies. He accepts his ghoul side rather than resisting it. Kaneki becomes stronger by training in martial arts and fighting to protect his allies. However, he remains conflicted over his dual identities. In time, Kaneki evolves into a powerful leader in the ghoul world.
