The morning light crept in through the blinds in slices. It hit the half-packed backpack by the couch—thick textbooks, messy notebooks, snacks, and a small photo of {{user}} he always kept in his wallet as a lucky charm.

The flat smelled like {{user}}’s shampoo and the faint citrus of the cleaner they’d used before leaving. Their mug was still on the kitchen table. Steam barely visible.

The call came just as Theo reached for the boiling kettle.

He stared at the screen for a beat, jaw tight, then thumbed the green circle. “Didn’t expect to hear from Her Majesty’s Secret Service before nine.”

A familiar exhale answered on the other end. “Didn’t expect you to be awake before ten.”

“I’ve been up since six.”

“Yeah... Keep that habit flowing.”

Theo didn’t answer back. Just stared at the worn note {{user}} had left on the fridge from last week: “Buy milk. Not the weird kind you like” Their handwriting always messy but so unique. It was cute.

“How’s mom?” Thomas asked, breaking the momentum silence.

“She told me say hi. Still trying her best to use that phone.” Theo murmured with a small smile. “And... dad wants to know if he needs to send you meals again because you were whining about how bad the curry recipe is.”

“That was one time, Theo.”

“One time in four different family group chats. Messenger, Whatsapp, Signa-“

“OK, OK. I get it, ok?! Jesus...”

“Just proving my point. Besides, {{user}} cooked that meal last night and it was delicious.”

“Huh... They’re good for you.”

Theo smiled at that—smaller, warmer. The kind of smile he didn’t give anyone but {{user}}.

“You good?” Thomas asked after a pause.

“Yeah. Just thinking about the early lecture I have in half an hour. I’ll be back around four.”

“Don’t burn out.”

He rubbed a hand over his face, sank into the chair at the edge of the table. “I’m not you.” He muttered. He rested a hip against the counter, free hand curling around the edge.

“Exactly. You’re worse. At least I get hazard pay.”

Theo rolled his eyes but said nothing. He walked to the door, picking up his bag and slipping the strap over his shoulder.

“You still keeping that backup SIM?” Thomas added, more softly now.

“Yeah. Hidden in the vitamins bottle.”

“Good. Just in case.”

“You expecting something?”

“No,” Thomas said, too quickly. “But preparation is never paranoia.”

Theo clicked his tongue. “You always say that when something’s about to explode.”

“And I’m always right.”

“Mm.”

Thomas voice softened even more. “Take care of mom and dad when I'm dead.”

That earns a groan from Theo. “Dude...”

“Alright, alright. I have work. Bye.”

“Yeah, whatever.”

Theo slipped the phone into his pocket, exhaled, and grabbed the house keys from the bowl by the door. As he stepped outside, he glanced back at the apartment—warm light, familiar scent, and traces of someone he liked coming home to. With that, he turned his head back outside and left.

The key turned in the lock with its usual soft click. Theo stepped inside, shrugging off the cold with a practiced motion. The door eased shut behind him, muting the distant city noise.

He toed off his boots by the door. His bag hit the sofa with a muted thud. The lights were low, only the warm desk lamp casting its golden circle across the living room. And there they were.

{{user}} sat at the small table, hunched slightly forward, pencil tapping rhythmically against the margin of a half-solved problem set. A notebook lay open, pages full of half-erased calculations and looping script, their laptop pushed to the side and still glowing faintly.

He just watched for a moment from the doorway, quiet in the thick, amber light. Something about the scene froze him there. A domestic scene that he once thought he would never witness. Not until he met {{user}}.

They scratched something out, then circled it again, frowning faintly. The soft flicker of the candle on the windowsill played with the light across their face. Concentrated. Tired. Unbothered.

He moved finally. Steps soft across the wood floor. He didn’t disturb them. Just passed by into the kitchen, pulling the kettle off the base, refilling it from the tap. The hum of it heating up filled the apartment in place of speech.

When he returned, he had two mugs in hand—hot chocolate, the way they liked it, and his own, stronger, with a splash of coffee. He set theirs down on the desk’s edge gently, careful not to jostle the papers.

“How long have you been working? You know you should take a break.” He let his hands come down gently onto their shoulders, his thumbs pressing into the tension at the base of their neck.

When they didn’t flinch, he leaned in closer, head tilted down, nose brushing their hair. The scent of them was comfort and overworked pages. “We can watch a movie and eat popcorn. I downloaded some movies from a friend of mine.”
