Roman kicked his feet up on his desk, taking a long drag from his cigar before exhaling. “That last one was actually pretty funny! Hey! Do a doodle of Red slippin’ on a banana peel with you pointing and laughing!”
Neopolitan smirked, rolling her eyes as she flipped over her writing pad and quickly began to doodle. About a minute later, she flipped the pad over showing a childish doodle of Ruby Rose slipping on a banana peel with a pack of Grimm descending on her to boot. Doodles of Neopolitan and Roman were drawn off to the side pointing and laughing. The words “There. Happy now?” were written under the sketch.
Roman burst out laughing. “Ahahaa! Ahhh yeah that’s goo-”
A knock on the door to Roman’s office interrupted them. With a sigh, Roman snuffed out his cigar on the ashtray on his desk. “Enter!” he yelled.
A second later, one of his men entered into the small, unassuming office. He glanced between Roman and Neopolitan before clearing his throat. “B-boss...”
Roman held out his hand to silence him, his eyes flicking towards his underling’s empty hands. “No. No. No. No! Why the fuck are you here empty-handed!? Where’s the Dust?!”
The underling’s mouth opened and closed several times before he found his. “Boss, we had it! B-but someone got the drop on us! By the time we realized what was going on, three of our men were already on the floor and the cops were on the way!”
Roman’s eyes flashed with pure rage as his fist slammed against his desk. “FUCK!” he shouted, causing Neopolitan to flinch. “This is the third fucking time this fucking month! And you sorry fucks come back empty handed again?! You let some chump—some nobody upstart run your pockets and you got nothing?! No name, no face, nothing?! The hell am I paying you all for?”
The underling was at a loss for words, shrugging helplessly. “It’s like we’re dealing with a ghost, boss! We cover our bases, got guys on every corner—”
“And you still got shit to show for it,” Roman snarled as he stood up from his desk. “Get the fuck out!”
His underling quickly spun on his heel and moved to escape his boss’s wrath. Roman’s voice caused him to stop dead in his tracks, his hand just inches away from the door knob. “Wait,” Roman said, his tone strained. “Tell the boys we’re raising our protection fees to make up for their losses. And I’m docking their cut until we catch our little phantom thief. Now go!”
The underling quickly scrambled out of Roman’s office, leaving Neopolitan and Roman alone once more. Neopolitan shifted a little, eyeing Roman with a frown. After a moment, Roman took a deep breath and looked at Neo. “Get in touch with Adam,” He murmured. “We got too many questions and not enough answers.”
Neo raised an eyebrow, giving him a quizzical look before scribbling something on her writing pad and showing it to Roman with her response written on it: “And if it’s one of Adam’s boys?”.
Roman smirked as he grabbed his hat and cane. “Then you and I are going to go on a little Faunus poaching spree.”
The streets of Vale were hushed and chilly tonight. Too frigid for honest folk to be out, and too silent for the unruly. Nevertheless, Blake Belladonna was crouched on a rooftop, overlooking the aftermath of an interrupted burglary.
Blake’s eyes narrowed from her shadowed vantage point as she observed the Vale PD going through their procedure. Her eyes flicked towards the back of their squad cars. Three men wearing black suits sat in the back of one.
’Roman’s thugs’, Blake thought to herself as she continued to observe. ‘Another Dust heist disrupted, and more questions...’
Blake knew she was too late to find what she was really looking for; a glimpse of the rumored Phantom Thief. Word on the street was that a ghost was stalking the streets of Vale. A ghost with a particular interest in Dust and vigilantism. And no matter what she heard, it was always the same...
“No one knows their name or face,” Blake murmured to herself as she slipped away from her vantage point, leaving the crime scene behind. As she sprinted and leapt across the rooftops, her mind kept wandering back to the mystery player that had came out of nowhere. ‘Not even a calling card for style points. Are they all business? Or are they laying low?’ Blake silently wondered. ‘And why Vale?’
Just as Blake was about to make her way back to Beacon Academy, something made her stop in her tracks. Was it a feeling? Pure instinct? She couldn’t tell. Blake closed her eyes and listened as intensely as she could with both sets of ears. Nothing, save for the sounds of the city and the wind.
Blake scowled, taking a deep breath as she closed her eyes. She reached within herself drawing upon the connection between her Aura and her Semblance, straining the limits of her Semblance and senses to feel the nearby shadows themselves...
And then she found it. Something lurking in the darkness. As if in a trance, Blake silently descended from the rooftop and into an abandoned alleyway below.
The grime and debris in the alleyway was as natural as it could be. A rat scurried away from Blake as she crept into the alleyway, her eyes scanning the shadows around her. Nothing out of the ordinary. The alley was a dead end at that, meaning that it was unlikely that anyone had passed through.
’No one here but the rats and my paranoia...’ Blake thought to herself as she let out a sigh.
Just as Blake was about to turn and leave, she saw something out of the corner of her eye, a flicker of movement in the darkness to her left. Blake’s hand immediately went to Gambol Shroud. “Who’s there?” She called out.
