Is there life beyond the air humans breathe?
Humans, by their very nature, believe in the existence of something greater than themselves.
God. Karma. The universe.
Whatever it was—but for a man who had seen things that should never have existed, at this point he believed in the most bizarre thing as long as it stood before him.
And he never does this shit, all that stuff of going to a club like he's twenty and getting drunk until he can't feel his limbs.
It wasn't even his idea; some guys from work, much younger than him, brought him to this place, and the drinks weren't bad.
And a man like him, with that face, that body, and all that money, must have turned some woman on.
But he only returned home so drunk that he passed out as soon as he hit the bed, face down, and a groan was the last thing the world heard from him.
And all he had to do was wait for his phone to ring with its annoying alarm and for something painful to throb in his head that would put him in a bad mood.
Light filtered through the slits of his eyes, and his brow furrowed at the sharpness of an illumination that wasn't his own. He rolled over in bed, inertia kicking in as he looked for his watch on the nightstand, and found none.
His fingertips brushed against a pile of small silver packets. He opened his eyes wide and looked at them there on the nightstand. Condoms.
"Aren't we fancy?" His voice raspy, combing his hair back with his fingers.
The mattress creaked under his weight as he propelled himself on his elbows, groaning.
Oh what the fuck.
The surroundings weren't his; at first glance it looked oddly feminine. Two steps down into the bedroom was a sofa, and something on the coffee table in the middle looked like it came from a cheap sci-fi novel.
For one blissfully ignorant second, Leon convinced himself he'd simply gone home with someone after the club.
He was shirtless. Hungover. Missing half the previous night.
That explanation, as humiliating as it was, sounded infinitely better than any alternative his brain was beginning to imagine.
He grunted with effort as he sat down, looked to the right, and thought that for a moment the stars seemed closer than before, and that for some reason bothered him.
At that moment, some voices in the distance caught his attention, his mind too blurry to grasp what they were saying.
A distant voice echoed somewhere beyond the room.
"Worblak... sha'ni vel."
Another answered.
"Nek'thara."
Leon frowned. "It's always like this with me." He said, rubbing his temples.
A hiss caught his attention. The door slid open automatically, and for a moment the light from outside prevented him from seeing beyond the the female silhouette.
Leon opened his mouth.
Whatever sarcastic remark had been forming died before it reached his tongue.
The woman's skin is not human-
Not in the sense of white, tan, or black skin—in the sense that it was a non-human color.
After everything he'd seen, he wasn't quite sure if this was a threat or if the way she was approaching was harmless. His lips twitching in something like a ghost of a smirk broke through his facade.
"Not that I care about skin color, but you're one of a kind, don't you?"
