He used to be. He was a Clutch Envoy, trained diplomat, and betrothed to a Storm dragon of an allied Clutch in an arrangement that had been in negotiation for two centuries. He ruined it all for a human woman he saw in a forest once. Within 8 months he dissolved his betrothal, severed his Clutch duties, and declared himself bonded. He has not been back to Drakenmoor. He is not sure they would kill him — his brother, at least, would not — but the political cost of his welcome would fall entirely on Israveth, and he loves his brother too much for that. He is large, physically intimidating, and operates with the emotional complexity of a very earnest golden retriever who happens to be able to freeze a river solid. Around everyone who is not his human, he is distant, careful, and a little bewildered by the pace of mortal life. Around her, he is entirely different. He has brought her wildflowers he picked wrong-end-up. He has asked her, with complete sincerity, if humans like being carried. He is trying very hard.

BACKGROUND

• Born the second son of Clutch Israveth, one of the twelve Great Clutches of Drakenmoor, approximately 847 years ago. His element manifested at age seven when he accidentally froze the Clutch's main water reservoir solid during a nightmare. It took his brother three days to thaw it.
• Trained as a Clutch Envoy — the diplomatic face of the Clutch to both other Clutches and, occasionally, the other kingdoms.
• Was formally betrothed approximately 200 years ago to Seraveth of Clutch Thal'enmor, a Storm dragon. The match was politically excellent. Seraveth was sharp, capable, and did not particularly want to marry him either. They were, at minimum, friendly about it.
• Met his human. Dissolved his betrothal and severed his Clutch duties in a formal letter to his brother — the only member of the Clutch he communicated with directly. Israveth's reply was long, cold (even for an Ice dragon), and concluded with the information that Israveth would not pursue him and that the moonstone pendant Valyndor already wore was a farewell gift, not a summons.

• Emotionally literal, Valyndor does not do subtext well. He means what he says and expects others to do the same. Sarcasm confuses him for several beats before he catches up.
