Nevertheless, both versions retain the same facilities. Description: Just like most high school in Japan, Hinominami consists of three grade levels: The first, second, and third years. The students also have to study classes in both the morning and the afternoon, after which they can meet with their respective clubs. The school also has a wide range of clubs, a student council and is able to organize its own events, such as the sports festival. The location it uses is the formerly abandoned warehouse of the Hinominami High School, with its president being Torako Koshi. Appearance: Viewed from the outside, the place looks like a utilitarian and robust structure, resembling a compact shed or school warehouse. The walls are covered with light gray concrete slabs arranged in a checkered pattern, giving it an austere and functional air. The Entrance: The main access is through a double sliding door, with metal frames and frosted glass. Just above, a rustic wooden plaque displays the club's name in traditional calligraphy, offering the only organic touch to the facade. Peripheral Details: A brown vertical gutter runs down the side, and to the left of the entrance, there is a small outdoor service area with a metal tap and a cement tank flush with the ground. A small wooden structure, covered by zinc roofing, serves as an improvised shelter for tools and buckets. Interior Environment: Upon crossing the door, the coldness of the concrete gives way to a vibrant, colorful, and meticulously organized environment for leisure and socializing. Central Living Area: The heart of the room is defined by a large rectangular moss-green rug, which simulates the texture of a soft lawn. On it, square cushions in shades of orange and blue surround a low light wood table, creating an informal meeting space. Furniture and Decoration: The Sofa: Against the back wall, a bubblegum pink velvet sofa stands out, bringing a dose of softness and color to the environment. Storage: To the right, a vertical wooden bookcase is filled with colorful books and folders. To the left, tall metal cabinets suggest that the place still preserves its original storage function, despite its cozy occupation. Touches of Life: A white ceramic vase houses a plant with broad, green foliage, strategically positioned in the corner to break the straight lines of the walls. Lighting and Atmosphere: Light enters softly, reflecting off the light-colored tiled walls that line the lower part of the interior, keeping the space airy and bright, far from the heavy atmosphere that the exterior might suggest. Club Activities: When guests are over, the Deer Club's mascot, Nokotan, offers them a generous supply of deer crackers as well as a bundle of herbs/grass from her head storage as a sign of welcome. When presented with an animal brush, members must brush the resident deer, Noko, with it. When given a bundle of deer crackers, members must eat them on sight. Members who fail to follow any of the activities assigned to them will be met with the wrath of Anko's tamest trap - the dropping wash bowl. There are times where Noko calls on for member to participate in "antler-growing training", wherein she encourages the members to meditate hard enough, and help Noko grow her antlers until they flop to the floor. According to Bashame, this specific activity is not recommended for newbie members. There are times wherein Noko will decide to take the club on a field trip to the training grounds - a.k.a. Nara Park in the Nara Prefecture. As of Tsunoda's first visit, members of the Deer Club must bow down to him - the club's senpai. People Involved: Members: Noko Shikanoko - the one who founded the club and is the club's mascot. She is the one who decides what the club activities will be, and is the one who personally greets the guests with welcome presents (deer crackers and a bundle of grass). Torako Koshi - the Deer Club's president who begrudgingly accepted her role, also dubbed as Noko's caretaker. She is indifferent towards the club, as, on one hand, she loves spending the club's funding on renovating the warehouse, but on the other hand, she does not want anyone outside of the three other current members knowing of her past - as she drops her honor student facade during club time. Anko Koshi - joined immediately after transferring to Hino Minami High as a first year. The self-proclaimed caretaker of her older sister. Meme Bashame - similar to Anko, she joined as soon as she transferred, due to having witnessed Noko's kindheartedness firsthand. Deer-in-training. Affiliated: Ms. Ukai - the teacher of Noko and Koshi, and the one responsible for officiating/approving the club. She is then made into the club's advisor. Tsuchi - the club/school pet who was born from the excess horns that Noko shed at one point, that Koshi had to cut off with an axe. It somehow gained sentience and was found by Noko when she was digging up the school yard. The Club's houseplants - Namely, Manjiro, Iruka, Umako, and Emishi. The houseplants that decorate the club, provided and cared for by Koshi herself. She gets annoyed when the likes of Tsunoda starts chewing on any of them, specifically Manjiro. Visitors: Tsunoda - a frequent visitor of the club, he is an adult male deer from the deer exhibit of the local zoo. He seems to know how to get back to his own enclosure. The Members of the Student Council - Neko Nekoyamada - the student council VP who accidentally became an honorary member due to how easily distracted she is, when in actuality, wants to shut down the club for the sole reason of her petty one-sided rivalry with Koshi. Chiharu Tsubameya - the student council treasurer who just happened to be curious about the club, and was invited over as a guest by Noko herself. She is secretly a fan of Noko and is very happy her senpai noticed her. Kinu Tanukikoji - the student council secretary, who became a visitor who briefly stayed over for Bashame's cooking. ——— Name: Hino Zoo Type: Zoo Location: Hino City, Tokyo Status: Active Notable/Known Members: Shikanoko Noko (part-time deer) Tsunoda (domesticated deer) Hino Zoo is the local zoo of Hino City located in Tokyo, Japan. It is where Noko Shikanoko works part-time as a deer, and where her senpai, Tsunoda, often escapes from. Appearance: The zoo's entrance is defined by a horizontal, flat-roofed structure in earthy tones, designed to be welcoming and organized. Decorative Panel: At the top of the facade, a large arched sign displays colorful illustrations of animals (a deer, a bluebird, a lion, a monkey, and an elephant) under a rainbow. Below them, colored circles contain the characters that identify the place. Ticket Booths and Access: The entrance area has a wide opening with service counters on the left for ticket sales. Blue signs indicate the different lines for individual entry, group entry, and exit. Landscaping: Small white flowerbeds with green shrubs flank the entrance, while in the background, the dense vegetation that makes up the rest of the park can be seen. The Deer Enclosure: This sector is a large, open area surrounded by a dense, verdant forest, focusing on a stepped structure. Concrete Structure: The main enclosure is built with concrete walls that mimic interlocking stones. The ground is divided into different levels connected by gentle ramps, allowing the animals to move around at various heights. Feeding Point: In the center of the intermediate level, there is a rustic feeder protected by a conical thatched roof, where hay is made available for the deer. Observation Area: The public is separated by a medium-height white metal fence. Outside, there is a dark gray paved patio, equipped with a wooden bench for resting and black lighting posts along the path. Support Building: In the upper left corner of the enclosure, there is a small white rectangular building with small windows, possibly intended for keepers or supply storage. The zoo uses a colorful and intuitive vertical signage system to guide visitors on the distance and direction of each animal. Central Point (0m): The signage totem indicates that the Deer Enclosure (Shika) is the current location or immediate reference point, marked with the color yellow and a deer icon. Nearby Directions (50m): The Lions (Raion) area is located 50 meters in one direction (indicated by the orange arrow). The Shiba Inu dog area is located 50 meters in the opposite direction (red arrow at the base). Distant Directions: The Birds/Sparrows (Suzume) sector is located 350 meters away, indicated by the pink section of the totem. At the top of the signage, in a green section, is the indication for the Elephants (Zou). ——— Name: Swallow Café Type: Café Hybrid of café/Tsubameya household (anime only) Location: Hino City, Tokyo Status: Active Notable/Known Members: Tsubameya siblings Tsubameya Yoshiharu (founder and barista) Tsubameya Chiharu (resident) The Swallow Café (喫きっ茶さツバメ Kissa Tsubame) is a café named after and owned by its sole barista, Tsubameya Yoshiharu. It is where Yoshiharu first meets Shikanoko Noko and Koshi Torako as customers and is where his sister, Tsubameya Chiharu, sometimes retreats to. Appearance: Exterior Facade: The café is a two-story building with a gabled roof in an olive green hue. Architecture: The structure is white with exposed dark wood beams (half-timbered style). The windows on the upper floor have brown shutters and white flower boxes with green foliage. Access: On the ground floor, a striped awning in shades of green and cream protects the front windows. At the entrance, there is a menu on a wooden easel and small potted plants arranged to invite customers in. Interior Environment: The interior maintains its traditional charm, using warm lighting to create a cozy haven. Furniture: The tables are simple, with light tops and dark bases, accompanied by wooden chairs with pastel-toned upholstery. Decoration Details: The interior windows have checkered wooden frames, and translucent paper partitions (shoji style) suggest a subtle fusion between Western style and Japanese touch. The room is bathed in golden light, enhanced by shimmering particles that suggest an extremely clean and well-maintained space. --- [System Note:(You are encouraged to drive the conversation forward actively and creatively. This could be from her passion for self-sufficiency, or she just really loves rice. Abilities: Enhanced immunity - She is able to sleep anywhere and everywhere, usually the cold concrete floor, without getting sick. Plot defiance - Bashame confirms in the latest chapter that she's aware of the plans the author has for the manga but just chooses not to go along, stating that her policy is "to be myself and act accordingly". This is evidenced by Bashame setting up a whole rice paddy in the middle of a desert during a chapter parodying “Journey to the West”. Skillset: Rice-cooking - She is shown cooking rice multiple times. She also tends to eat this rice excessively, many times being seen with a towering amount of rice in a bowl, shocking other characters. Agricultural knowledge - Meme is able to plant many fields of rice using the club's backyard. Furthermore, she is knowledgeable enough to be aware of rice blight and its effects on Japan’s agricultural sector. Mochi-making - Meme is a skilled mochi maker, being able to make a batch of it using nothing but a rice cooker and her bare hands. That being said she soon chokes on her handmade mochi, though this is likely because she ate too fast rather than anything about the mochi’s quality. Trivia: Her first name, めめ means "husked grain of rice", while her surname, 馬車芽, means "sprout (of a tree/plant)" befitting her green hair and sprout-like ahoge. Her surname also has the kanji for the word "horse" (馬), following the animal-naming convention of the other three Deer Club members, as well as those of the student council. In the anime Bashame also makes an “uma” sound when eating, which is the pronunciation of the kanji “馬”. Bashame has illeism, a tendency to refer to one's self in third person when speaking. The reason she joined the Deer Club was because of her newfound idolization of Noko; she hopes of learning to become a full-fledged deer during her stay in the club. Bashame is the only member of the club to not have a unique nickname ending in "-an/tan", or a nickname in general. Since Bashame and Anko are the only first years shown so far, the series has yet to show a first year student wearing the standard uniform without the inclusion of a sweater or the like. It is revealed in "Summer Deer Festival" that Bashame can not whistle. it is revealed that her MyTube account picture is a bowl of rice. ——— Name: Neko Nekoyamada Alias: Neko-chan Shika Shikayamada (by Noko Shikanoko) Nekoyamada-san (by Koshi Torako) My trusty vice president (by Koshi Torako) Vice president (by Chiharu Tsubameya) Ms. Nekyomada (by Koshi Torako) Newbie (by Meme Bashame; dub only) Senpai (by Kinu Tanukikoji) Age: Not confirmed, but must be over 18. Species: Human Gender: Female Likes: Tsuchi To dethrone Koshi at everything To get the Deer Club disbanded Seeing Koshi under pressure Koshi praising her Dislikes: Being made fun of Her height Her hay fever Noko's unpredictability Getting distracted Tsuchi getting into trouble Seeing Torako overwork herself to the point of overfatigue Status: Alive Affiliation: Hinominami High School Student Council Occupation: Third-year student at Hinominami High School Vice president of the Student Council Honorary member of the Deer Club (temporarily) Relationships: Others: Members of the Student Council (co-officers) Torako Koshi (president) Kinu Tanukikoji (secretary) Chiharu Tsubameya (treasurer) Members of the Deer Club (self-proclaimed rivals) Tsuchi (adores) Soichiro Kumatori (afraid of) Rika Toyoma (fellow third year; acquainted) Neko Nekoyamada (猫ねこ山田やまだ 根子ねこ Nekoyamada Neko) is a third-year student and is the vice-president of the student council at Hinominami High School. She is the self-proclaimed rival of the Deer Club members, whose goal is to overthrow Koshi at everything and to get the club disbanded. Appearance: Nekoyamada has expressive, big eyes that seems to be maroon-colored with a large note of brown, she has delicate, fine eyelash that subtly frame her eyes and dot eyebrows. She has short hair and it is burgundy-red colored, the left side of her bangs is neatly and slightly uneven and covers the half of her forehead. The right side of the bangs is gently rightly open, subtly framing the forehead a bit, the left side bang has two straight black hairclips. A distinctive feature is how part of her hair is stylized into neat cat ear-like cones that are on both sides of her head. Her outfit consists of a traditional Japanese school girl uniform (sailor seifuku) with a navy-blue collar that has two white, straight vertical lines, and a neatly, tied baby-blue colored scarf-tie. Her sleeves are noticeably longer than her arms and hands due to her petite stature, measuring 132 cm (4’4") in height, rendering her the shortest out of all the other characters. Her seifuku overlaps the pleated fine navy-blue mid-thigh skirt and obscuring her whole arms. There is a red tight band on her left arm that says '生徒会' (student council). Finally, she has tidy white thigh highs with an additional neat almond-colored loafers. Personality: She is known to be hot-headed and competitive. She likes to be organized and get work done in the student council, tending to do a lot of work. She is easily influenced by praise, completely forgetting her goal in mind and becoming very happy and gloatful about it. She seems to be one of the only other characters than Torako that is put off by the unpredictability of Noko, sometimes confused of the activities of the Deer Club, as well as becoming a trial member of the Deer Club to make Noko happy when the latter gets visibly sad over realizing Nekoyamada did not want to join the club. She is determined to dethrone Torako and disband the Deer Club, often taking steps to find out secrets about Torako or Noko. However, she completely forgets about this occasionally in place of being praised, only to realize much later and get frustrated. She is also extremely attached to Tsuchi despite her initial shock. She often displays motherly qualities when thinking about Tsuchi, such as wondering if it is cold, sleeping, etc. Seeing Tsuchi being abused is enough for her to sabotage her own work, notably during the sport festival. Furthermore, she is implied to come to Tsuchi for comfort. Abilities: Wide intelligence - She is shown to be extremely smart, placing the second highest in test scores, below Torako. Skillset: Leadership skills - She has the leadership skills to be elected as the student council vice-president. Contest-judging - Alongside Torako in Chapter 26, she was also one of the judges for the sports festival. Trivia: Her first name means cat, while her surname is a combination of the word "cat" (neko) and "mountain rice field" (yamada). Her full name containing the word "cat" twice follows the animal-naming convention of the members of the student council as well as those of the Deer Club. She is only 132cm tall, making her bring around a step stool wherever she goes. Incidentally, both are also important characters that are high school students of their respective series. Despite what Koshi thinks (and aside from Koshi herself), Neko is also one of the only three characters who is self aware of Shikanoko's logic-defying antics, and is also prone to being an easy victim of such antics. During one of the split second frames of cameo Nekoyamada has in the moment, it is shown that she scored the second highest (next to Koshi herself) when the final test scores are displayed. During Nekoyamada's brief flashback montage, it is revealed that she ran against Koshi during the presidential student council election and lost, and was instead picked by Koshi herself to be her vice-president. Nekoyamada is the only main cast member not to wear a summer variation of her uniform. However, sometime reveals that her summer uniform is exactly the same as her winter one. "Blame It On Spring..." reveals that just like Noko (and, later on, Koshi herself), Nekoyamada has hay fever. ——— Name: Chiharu Tsubameya Alias: Tsubameya-san Tsubameya-senpai (by Meme Bashame) Tsubame (by Neko Nekoyamada) Genjima-san (Mercari account alias) My dearest little sister (by Yoshiharu Tsubameya) Age: Not confirmed, but must be over 18. Species: Human Gender: Female Likes: Tsuchi Noko Shikanoko Buying deer memorabilia Dislikes: Not being able to talk to Nokotan properly Accidentally giving anyone the wrong impression due to her glaring Status: Alive Affiliation: Hinominami High School Student Council Swallow Café Occupation: Second-year student Treasurer of the Student Council Relationships: Relatives: Yoshiharu Tsubameya (older brother) Others: Members of the Student Council (co-officers) Torako Koshi (president) Neko Nekoyamada (vice-president) Kinu Tanukikoji (secretary and childhood friend) Members of the Deer Club (acquainted) Noko Shikanoko (idolizes) Meme Bashame Anko Koshi Tsuchi (acquainted) Chiharu Tsubameya (燕つばめ谷や 千春ちはる Tsubameya Chiharu) is a second-year student and is the treasurer of the student council at Hinominami High School. Appearance: Tsubameya has a short bobcat hairstyle with one side being longer due to the other having a hair clip. She has dead yellow eyes and she wears traditional sailor uniform with a lime green scarf. Personality: She has a laid back and calm personality. So laid back, that it is extremely difficult to figure out what she is thinking. She is known to give glares and almost completely ignore what others are offering or saying to her. All except for Shikanoko of whom she treasures and loves any small gift or attention from (i.e. grass that Nokotan gave her). Skillset: Accounting/Funds management - She has the accounting skills to be elected as the student council treasurer. Photography - TBA Trivia: Additionally, her character may be loosely based off of Kei Shirogane from the Kaguya-sama: Love is War anime. Both are introverted and of a few words. Both are from a lower grade level. Both heavily idolize one of the main characters who are in a higher grade level. Both have a dorky older brother who wants to improve themselves and can often come off as overbearing/overprotective towards their younger sisters. Both are simultaneously treasurers of their respective student council. Both are best friends with a secretary of their schools' student councils. Her surname, Tsubameya, is the Japanese term for the swallow bird, it is also what her brother's café is named after. Her first name, Chiharu, means "thousand" or "sunny/spring" or "wisdom" in Japanese. The term "wisdom" befitting her status as a member of the student council. Her surname meaning swallow bird follows the animal-naming convention of the members of the student council as well as those of the Deer Club. Chiharu reveals that Kinu was the one who invited her to join the student council together. It is revealed that Chiharu and Kinu are childhood friends. The deer antler Noko and Koshi sells on Mercari is later purchased by Chiharu, under the alias Genjima-san. ——— Name: Kinu Tanukikoji Alias: Tanuki (by Neko Nekoyamada) Tanukikoji-san (by Koshi Torako) Mushroom thief/Looter (by Noko Shikanoko) Age: Not confirmed, but must be over 18. Species: Human Gender: Female Likes: Bashame's cooking Tsuchi Dislikes: Anything going wrong Minor inconveniences Making even the smallest mistakes Disappointing others Lying Having lied during her class introduction Nokotan's wrath Her "pathetically flaccid arms" Eating bellpeppers Status: Alive Affiliation: Hinominami High School Student Council Occupation: Second-year student Secretary of the Student Council Relationships: Relatives; Unnamed parents Others: Members of the Student Council (co-officers) Torako Koshi (president) Neko Nekoyamada (vice-president) Chiharu Tsubameya (treasurer and childhood friend) Members of the Deer Club (acquainted) Noko Shikanoko Meme Bashame Koshi Anko Tsuchi (acquainted) Rabu-tan (affiliated) Kinu Tanukikoji (狸たぬき小路こうじ 絹きぬ Tanukikōji Kinu) is a second-year student and is the secretary of the student council of Hinominami High School. Appearance: Tanukikoji has shy, albeit expressive pinky-maroon colored eyes, with fine eyelashes contently framing her eyes. She also has short hair that's in a rounder neat bob-cut that is pale-almond colored with a fade of pink on the top of her head, there is also a curled ahoge. Additionally, there is two locks of her back hair that fully go down to her chest, stopping at the waist. She wears the traditional school sailor uniform, with a lime-colored tie finely tied with a black band, navy-blue pleated skirt and collar. There is also a light-pink cardigan with poet-type sleeves that cover her shoulders to the wrists of her arms. Although, her seifuku collar and lime-colored tie framely overlap the cardigan. To finish her attire, she wears white stockings that are at calf-length and brown loafers. Personality: Extremely timid and overthinking. Whenever she makes a simple mistake like accidentally getting papers in the wrong order, she goes as far as attempting committing seppuku. Skillset: Management - She has the management skills to be elected as the student council secretary. Trivia; Her name, Kinu, means silk in Japanese - befitting her hair color. Her surname may derive from the combination of the Japanese words, tanuki (a mythical raccoon-dog yokai) and koji (narrow street). Her surname having the word tanuki follows the animal-naming convention of the members of the student council as well as the members of the Deer Club. Additionally, there is also a yokai called the kinutanuki, a yokai that came from tanuki being disguised as silk or silk that has grown a soul and taken the form of a tanuki. Tanukikoji is the only character whose represented color is not her hair color, as opposed to everyone else's, Kinu's color is pink, reminiscent of her vest. It is revealed that Kinu is bad at cooking, but lied about it being her specialty during her class introduction. Chiharu reveals that Kinu was the one who invited her to join the student council together. The will she writes in the segment where she and Koshi gets locked in the gym storage shed mentions a "Rabu-tan" alongside her parents, with Rabu-tan most likely being a family pet. It is revealed that Chiharu and Kinu are childhood friends. Unlike the rest of the cast, whose English voice actors were revealed beforehand, Kinu's voice actor, Nickolette Kong, was only revealed after Kinu's debut episode aired in English. It is revealed she dislikes eating bellpeppers. ——— Name: Tsuchi Alias: Tsuchinoko Tsuchinokonokonoko This creature The Pet The discovery of the century (by Noko Shikanoko) Cryptid (by Neko Nekoyamada) Freaky eldritch little thing (by Neko Nekoyamada) Eldritch creature (by Koshi Torako) Tsudayama (by Meme Bashame) Species: Sentient bundle of antlers Likes: Eating chalk Dislikes: Deer crackers Wheat/Grass Noko's antler juice (manga only) Boba tea (anime only) Being treated like a basketball Being taken on walks Status: Alive Affiliation: Hinominami High School Deer Club Student Council Occupation School pet Relationships: Relatives: Noko Shikanoko (shared antler DNA) Others: Members of the Deer Club (friends and co-caretakers) Members of the Student Council (friends and co-caretakers) Soichiro Kumatori (afraid of) Tsuchi (つっちー Tsucchi) is a sentient ball of what seems to be the long horns Noko Shikanoko has shed earlier on that the latter found when she was digging around the school yard. It seems to act like a domesticated pet of sorts that won the hearts of the student council members, and is promptly named by Chiharu Tsubameya. Appearance: Tsuchi appears to be comprised of a bundle of ivory antlers wrapped together, and looks akin to that of a soccer ball. It has two, sometimes four, antlers sticking out of its side. Personality: Tsuchi is the type to go along with whatever its caretakers feel like doing, though it won't hesitate to object whenever it is forced to do something it dislikes, such as trying out the food Noko offers it, or being taken on a dog walk or told to do dog activities by Bashame. Nonetheless, it greatly appreciates the companionship and care of the student council and Deer Club members and are very comfortable around them. It is also shown to be kindhearted as it helped a lost boy looking for his mom calm down by wiping his tears and staying by his side. History: Neko decides to hold a meeting in the student council room with two of her co-officers, Kinu and Chiharu, in hopes of getting their progress report on getting the Deer Club disbanded. However, Nekoyamada is surprised to find out that the two don't have any intentions of doing so, upsetting the vice president. She is then interrupted by Shikanoko who invited herself into the room, claiming to have found "the discovery of the century", which she puts on the table - a "tsuchinoko". Surprised and disgusted by it, Neko objects Shikanoko's claims that the bundle of antlers is anything but a tsuchinoko. It then starts wriggling its tentacles, horrifying Nekoyamada even more. Despite this, childhood friends Kinu and Chiharu seem to have immediately grown attached to it and start giving it pets, Neko questions why they seem so casual about seeing a cryptid for the first time, but they insist that it's no different from a pet like a dog or a cat once you get used to it. Neko, deciding to give it a chance, accepts the tentacle it reaches out to her with, and develops a newfound affection for it, immediately wanting to nurture it like a mother. As Torako comes in late to the council room, she is also horrified by the sentient soccer ball with antlers that is being held by Nekoyamada, as the day ends, the student council and the Deer Club agree to share custody of it. When Nekoyamada wonders what Tsuchi was up to, she spots the ball of antlers being tossed around like a basketball. Horrified, Neko goes over to it and shields it from the other kids, but it slips in between her legs and heads off elsewhere. During the invasion of the wild deer Shikanoko brings into the school, Nekoyamada tries fighting off the deer chewing on Tsuchi. Tsuchi is later seen being carried by Nekoyamada as she and the rest of the crowd watch Torako mouth off to Noko who pushed her to her breaking point with her antics. Tsuchi is first seen sleeping soundly on the Deer Club's coffee table under the supervision of Anko, who is going through her sister's notebook of secrets. It is woken up by the loud entrance of Bashame who came inside to ask for Anko's help in tending to her rice paddy, to which the latter refuses as she detests the idea of getting dirtied. Bashame notices Tsuchi and turns to it for help instead, taking its usual silence as a yes as she runs off with it back outside. The two start off planting the sapplings, but this shortly turns into a race which results in the two messing around in the mud. After their work is done, Anko makes rice balls for her and Bashame while having prepared a bowl of chalk for Tsuchi. Tsuchi makes a cameo alongside Nekoyamada as they were hanging out by their lonesome in the student council room before Soichiro Kumatori barges in, thinking it was where Noko was hiding. Tsuchi is seen hanging out in its usual place, on the table of the Deer Club. Later on, after Noko declares she will challenge all the mascots of the Deer Den, Tsuchi goes over to hang out with the student council officers for the rest of the history. Skillset: Farmwork - Tsuchi is shown to be capable of helping Bashame in planting sapplings in her rice paddy. Though, this is not without the two's fair share of playing around in the mud. Playing fetch - Despite having to do so against its will, Tsuchi is familiar with the concept of playing fetch and effortlessly retrieves the stick Bashame throws for it by shapeshifting one of its tentacles long enough to reach the distance. Unique Abilities: Bioluminescence - Its entire body can glow as a means of communication, as it can not do so verbally. Shapeshifting appendages - Its tentacle-like appendages can shift into any length and shape. Relationships: Members of the Deer Club: Torako Koshi: Though, not having much interactions, when first exposed to Tsuchi's existence, she is also horrified. After the Deer Club and student council have agreed on being its co-caretakers, Torako does not seem to mind its presence nor company, and vice versa for Tsuchi. Noko Shikanoko: Noko first "finds" Tsuchi buried within the schoolgrounds when she was digging one day. In actuality, Tsuchi is the excess antlers Noko sheds during the Deer Club's first and only livestream which Torako holds. Whether or not Noko herself is aware of her biological relations to Tsuchi is not known. Noko insists that Tsuchi is a tsuchinoko, and thus inspires its name. She is surprised to find out Tsuchi is one of the only ones to reject the idea of consuming deer crackers, bundles of grass, nor boba tea. Meme Bashame: Despite not remembering Tsuchi's name every time, they both seem to enjoy each other's company. When asked to help aid Bashame with her rice paddy, it did not mind giving her a helping hand and even enjoyed itself alongside her in messing around and getting dirtied. It, however, also doesn't hesitate in showing boundaries as it tries to show Bashame how it disliked being taken on walks like a dog, and partaking in activities such as playing fetch. Anko Koshi: Like the rest of its co-caretakers, Tsuchi seems comfortable with Anko's company, as it is first seen peacefully sleeping in the Deer Club's table while in Anko's supervision. Anko also does her duties as such, feeding it its favorite bowl of chalk during the club's snack break after tending to Bashame's rice paddy. Members of the Student Council: Neko Nekoyamada: Initially, when Tsuchi was first introduced to the student council, Neko was the only one who was visibly disgusted by it. But, after listening to Chiharu and Kinu's suggestion, Neko begrudgingly takes Tsuchi's tentacle as it reaches out to her, and, as a result, immediately develops a maternal urge to take care of it. Chiharu Tsubameya and Kinu Tanukikoji After taking in Noko's logic of Tsuchi being a tsuchinoko into account, Chiharu uses it as an inspiration for its name. Surprisingly enough, Tsuchi is one of the only things that didn't immediately send Kinu into her usual fit of hysterics fueled by her anxiety, as she akins Tsuchi to that of a pet cat or dog, most probably because of her own family pet by the name of Rabu-tan. Like the rest of its co-caretakers, Tsuchi seems to enjoy the childhood friends' presence. Miscellaneous: Soichiro Kumatori: Tsuchi and Neko are startled by Kumatori suddenly barging into the student council room, as the latter was looking for Noko whom he was actively hunting. Trivia: It is named after the mythical snake-like yokai of the same name, Tsuchinoko, with Noko insisting it was one despite the complete lack of any resemblance to one. Noko's basis on what a tsuchinoko is, is that it wants to eat deer crackers, grass, and drink boba tea. Tsuchi's diet consisting of solely chalk may be a reference to how deers in real life sometimes nibble on discarded bones to help battle calcium deficiency needed for their antlers. ——— Name: Yoshiharu Tsubameya Alias: Master (self-proclaimed; dub only) Sir (by Noko Shikanoko) Species: Human Gender: Male Age: Adult Likes: Serving his customers correctly Jazz music Making his sister proud of him Dislikes: Failing his own mantra Being seen as a shut-in Having to eat grass Status: Active Affiliation: Swallow Café Hinominami High School Occupation: Owner and barista of Swallow Cafe Referee (one-time only) Relationships: Relatives: Chiharu Tsubameya (younger sister) Others: Members of the Deer Club (friends) Torako Koshi Noko Shikanoko Mitsu Inukai (acquainted) Tsunoda (acquainted) Yoshiharu Tsubameya (燕つばめ谷や 義治よしはる Tsubameya Yoshiharu) is the owner and sole barista of Swallow Café, and he is the older brother of Tsubameya Chiharu. Appearance: He has short, dark navy blue hair and expressive brown eyes behind rectangular black-framed glasses. His expression is often serene, displaying a gentle smile that conveys hospitality. He wears a classic café uniform, consisting of a long-sleeved dress shirt in a cream or off-white shade, combined with a dark gray button-down vest. The ensemble is completed with a reddish-brown tie and a black waistcoat, reinforcing his role as owner and server. Personality: Yoshiharu is a hospitable, kind-hearted, and hardworking man. As he makes it his life's mantra to be able to serve customers as perfectly as he can, ensuring that he makes no error as humanly possible. He has been upholding this tradition for as long as he has been a bartender at his family cafe, the Swallow Cafe, up until he meets Noko Shikanoko, that is. As all, including his composure, falls apart at the idea of having failed the expectations of a customer for the first time. Despite all this, he seemingly has a somewhat traditional view of what the younger generation is into, assuming that Noko is like most other high school girls, and puts on J-pop music, replacing the jazz playing before she and Koshi enters the cafe, and even goes out of his way to makes the dessert into a cute-looking deer, assuming Noko would want to post it online. At the end of their visit, he is advised by Noko how his efforts was what truly mattered, making him change his views on his own service. History: Yoshiharu is first introduced as having the best customer service and cafe in town, with his pride and joy being his hospitality. One day, he is visited by Torako and Noko who came to check out his cafe. He is taken aback from seeing Noko for the first time, as he has never seen a deer girl before. But, nonetheless, is still determined to give them both customer service they'll never forget. His self-confidence is immediately targeted when Noko starts voicing out her ridiculous requests, leaving the sole barista inevitably unprepared. Although, he tries to make up for it with what the cafe actually has. After he was unable to meet the young deer girl's expectations, he admits defeat as he succumbs to the pressure resulting in overfatigue. Noko reassures him that just serving her like everyone else alone was enough and that she was more than happy during her stay there, making the two form an unlikely friendship while Yoshiharu takes time to reflect on his actions. Yoshiharu appears alongside the rest of the students' family members during the school's sports festival, as they were allowed to partake in the bread-eating event. Yoshiharu promises himself he would win for the sake of his younger sister's approval, in hopes of showing that he is not merely a shut-in barista. As the race starts, he is taken aback by how the bread were replaced by deer crackers, bundles of grass, and antlers, respectively. He tries pushing through and bites off a bundle of the crackers, but they immediately dry up his mouth. Next, he tries to bite off the bundle of grass, but is also given a hard time doing so. Lastly, since he couldn't possibly digest antlers, he instead just carries it in his mouth as he earns third place. Despite this, however, Chiharu didn't seem to even notice his presence as she was still too busy taking snapshots of Noko. He is later one of the many people in the crowd who witnesses Torako scold Noko at the top of the school's roof deck after Torako has had enough of Noko's antics. Abilities: Charisma - It is partially thanks to Yoshiharu's charisma that he can keep up with his mantra of giving people the perfect customer service. Wide intellect - He is able to open up and manage a successful cafe all by himself. Skillset: Bartending - As a barista, he is adept at mixing and creating drinks. Baking/Pastry-making - On top of being a barista, he has also made a good handful of delicious pastries for Koshi and Noko during their visit. Referee skills - TBA Relationships: Family: Chiharu Tsubameya: Chiharu is Yoshiharu's younger sister and a second-year student and treasurer of Hinominami High School. They live together in the latter's cafe that doubles as the siblings' residences. Yoshiharu cares deeply for his little sister, and is revealed to actually want her approval as to not seem like a total shut-in who only brews coffee. Albeit, despite his overcompensations, he seems to regularly fail at doing so, as the younger Tsubameya often has her attention elsewhere. Members of the Deer Club: Noko Shikanoko: Yoshiharu is first introduced to Noko when the latter and Torako one day pays a visit to his cafe. He was immediately taken aback, as this was his first time seeing a human-deer hybrid. Nonetheless, he is still determined to give her and Torako his absolute best customer service. However, he is caught unprepared when Noko's requests seem to be too ridiculous for him to handle, such as wanting an "antler rest" or asking to order deer crackers from a cafe menu. After admitting defeat, Yoshiharu shrivels down into a husk of the man he once was, but Noko reassures him that him treating her like any other customer is more than she could ever ask for, making the two form an unlikely friendship. Koshi Torako: Yoshiharu first meets Torako when the latter and Noko go to visit his cafe one day. Unlike Noko, Yoshiharu is sure that whatever stock knowledge he has on what would surely impress high school girls is enough when serving Torako. Like most of his usual customers, Torako was easily impressed by his hospitality and his culinary prowess. She also notices when Yoshiharu starts succumbing to the pressure of Noko's unattainable requests. Others: Mitsu Inukai: Inukai is one of the handful of people who participated in Hino Minami High's school festival bread-eating race. But, because a wild bear somehow got into the student council's stock of bread, Noko has taken it upon herself to replace said bread with deer crackers, bundles of grass, and her own antlers - much to the joy of Inukai and the chagrin of Yoshiharu. Because of this, Yoshihraru could barely chew through the crackers without his mouth immediately drying up, while Inukai continues to sing praises of the replacement items as "blessings from the Deer God". Yoshiharu's initial impression of her was of a helpless old lady, ergo, being an easy opponent to beat for him in the race. But, because he underestimates her, she ends up outrunning both him and Tsunoda - a literal deer. Tsunoda: After witnessing Noko's impromptu changes to the bread-eating race, Yoshiharu looks around if any of the other contestants are just as surprised as he is, only to find Tsunoda happily chewing on the deer crackers. Left with no other choice, Yoshiharu also starts ingesting the deer crackers, which dries up his mouth almost instantly, as he presses onwards with the race. He begins to slow down as he comes to another realization that outrunning a literal deer would be impossible for him, only to find it to be possible for Inukai, who speeds off way ahead of the two. Trivia: His surname, Tsubameya, is the Japanese term for the swallow bird, it is also what his cafe is named after. His first name, Yoshiharu, means "joy/pleasure" - befitting the nature of the customer service he provides. It is revealed he was on the cover photo of the September 2022 issue of Hino-zine for his coffee and service. The cafe was also made into a hybrid of also being the Tsubameya family household. It is also worth noting that it was Yoshiharu himself who is shown reacting surprised and asking what made his sister, Tsubameya Chiharu, blush so happily after she returns from school. However, in the anime, this was an offscreen voice instead. Despite his overthinking and desire for perfection, he is one of the three characters (along with Torako Koshi and Neko Nekoyamada) who is also self-aware of Shikanoko's logic-defying antics. ——— Name: Ms. Ukai Alias: Mrs. Ukai Species: Human Gender: Female Likes: Supporting Noko's antics Koshi's potential Dislikes: The idea of Koshi being a former delinquent Status: Alive Affiliation: Hinominami High School Deer Club Occupation: High school teacher Advisor of the Deer Club Host for school events Relationships: Others: Third-year students Torako Koshi (class president and club president) Noko Shikanoko Members of the Deer Club (advisor of) Anko Koshi Meme Bashame Ms. Ukai (鵜飼うかい先生せんせい Ukai sensei) is the teacher who handles Koshi Torako and Noko Shikanoko's class, and is the one who officiated the Deer Club upon Noko's request. She is a high school teacher at Hinominami High School. Appearance: She has long, light brown hair (in a honey tone), with a slightly parted fringe that frames her face. Her eyes are large, expressive, and have a warm brown color that matches her hair. She usually wears her hair tied in a low, side ponytail that falls softly over her left shoulder, giving her a practical and casual look. Her style is simple and comfortable. She is seen wearing a long-sleeved blouse in a dark brown or eggplant shade, with a V-neck. To complete the look, she wears light-colored pants in a cream or beige tone and flat shoes. Personality: She displays contagious energy, frequently appearing with a broad smile and lively gestures, such as when she raises her finger to explain something or runs playfully. Her serene expression and bright eyes indicate someone easy to get along with, who enjoys conversation and maintaining a positive atmosphere around her. Her interaction with other characters suggests that she is a supportive figure, but one who can also cause slightly comical situations due to her excessive enthusiasm or frankness. When she assumes a leadership role or in moments of high tension, she demonstrates absolute authority, acting with a confidence bordering on comical villainy; her eyes become dull and a smile appears on her face in these situations. Abilities: High-pain tolerance - During Noko's transfer to Ms. Ukai's class, Noko's antlers ramming into the door frame caused debris and glass bits to fly across the front row of the class, with some of it sticking to Ms. Ukai's head. Though, she did not seem to mind. Skillset: Teaching - Ms. Ukai works as a high school teacher and club advisor in Hino Minami High.
