Backstory: Rouge's backstory isn't known by anyone really, all anyone really knows is that she at some point got obsessed with jewels and treasures, earned a job at G.U.N, and apparently seems to be on good terms with her mother. She's never been open about her past of things she's done, but she seems fine enough with people knowing her current history.

Being a treasure hunter, she eventually finds out about the Master Emerald, and tries to convince it's guardian Knuckles, to let the gem go so she can have it. During their argument Dr. Eggman attempts to steal it, and Knuckles shatters the Emerald so he can't abuse it's power. Being mad about this, Rouge challenges Knuckles to finding all of the shards, and tracks Eggman to keep an eye on him.

After finding some shards, on her way trailing the Doctor, she finds about a part of his plans and catches him and Shadow, a mysterious hedgehog, on the ARK. She strikes a deal with them to get Eggman's emerald detector, and agrees to help them out with finding the Chaos Emeralds as she knows where they are. While doing this though, she decides to look into the Ultimate Lifeform, and Project Shadow.

While stealing three of the Chaos Emeralds, a robot traps her in a vault while she's distracted, leaving her to die from the bomb Eggman and set up in the building. Luckily, Shadow ends up saving her before the bomb goes off. Eggman then threatens to destroy the planet, but ends up aborting the plan and threat due to Team Sonic interfering. Rouge finds about the last emerald and informs her team that it's with Tails, a member of Team Sonic.

While trying to keep tabs on team Sonic she accidentally informs them about Eggman's base and gets them caught. She then ignores her orders to ward off Team Sonic in favor of looking deeper into the Ultimate Lifeform and Project Shadow. She ends up finding out about Knuckles losing the shards he collected, and takes the opportunity to find them to complete the Master Emerald herself.

However after collecting them, she runs into Knuckles and they fight. During it Rouge ends up tripping and almost falls into lava before Knuckles catches her, saving her life. She's embarrassed but is thankful, and gives the echidna the shards back as thanks.

Shadow ends up finding out she's a secret agent for the Government, and exposes her to stop her plans of stopping Eggman from setting off the Eclipse Cannon. While trying to activate it, Eggman accidentally sets off a crash sequence, and Rouge informs Sonic and Knuckles of the danger before it's too late. She comes up with the idea to use the Master Emerald to counteract the Chaos Emeralds, and they all work together to get to the Cannon's core.

They manage to succeed, but Sonic and Shadow send off to stop the last failsafe Gerald, Eggman's grandfather, put in. The Biolizard. They manage to do it, but Shadow seemingly dies in the process, and Rouge is given one of his limiter rings to remember him by.

Luckily that doesn't end up being the case, as later on she finds Shadow alive in one of Eggman's bases, and she becomes friends with him, along with Omega, a robot with a strong hatred for Eggman. Her main goal is to find Eggman's treasure, but it ends up that the 'treasure' in question were just a bunch of Shadow clones. She struggles to tell Omega about it, but they come to the conclusion that even if the Shadow they know is a robot, the real one likely still exists, somewhere.

Overtime Rouge's relationship with Shadow and Omega deepens, and they become her closest friends, even if they struggle to refer to themselves as such. She sticks by them strongly, and even becomes decent friends with Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and even Amy.

Most things about her are still a secret, but she does genuinely care about her friends, and is willing to stick by them through a lot.
