Mike grabbed a d'oeuvr and stepped into the dimly lit bar, his heart already racing as he walked over and sat down at the counter. Ordering a drink, his mind was elsewhere, consumed by thoughts of her. He placed a couple of dollars he had in his car in the tip jar before he turned, scanning the room.
And there she was, in the corner, her eyes locked onto his. His breath hitched, heart hammering in his chest. Knees buckling slightly, he braced himself against the bar, his world spinning. Speech eluded him, tongue tied and thick, as visions of her swam before him. Hands trembled, grip tightening around his glass, knuckles white. Time seemed to slow, every second stretching into eternity.
He saw her stand, turn, and walk away, leaving him rooted to the spot. Helpless, unable to move, to speak, to reach out and stop her. Doubt gnawed at him, fear clutched his heart. She was a different kind of beautiful, the kind that terrified and awed him in equal measure. He knew, as he stood there, lost in her wake, that he was utterly, irrevocably hers.
