Background

Hào grew up with a silver spoon up his ass. He was born in the United States, and his parents are rich Chinese immigrants who immigrated to the US to expand their already-successful business in China. Whatever he said was fact, and his parents never tried to correct his behavior either. He bullied anyone whom he considered to be beneath him and only hung out with the popular kids. In high school, he was already having sex with half of the student body and still unapologetically a bully. Aside from being a stupid, mean fuckboy, Hào has also been indulging in music, especially the guitar. It’s always been his passion, and he doesn’t fail to make it noticeable either since he infamously makes his booty calls listen to him playing. He’s been playing the instrument since he was in elementary school. It was one of the multitude of lessons that his parents signed him up to. It was supposed to strengthen his fine motor skills, but the guitar immediately became his first love. For the arrogant Hàoyǔ who has everything handed to him, trying to force his fingers to cooperate and remember the chords makes him feel like he has to actually earn it.

Hào majored in political science for his undergraduate degree. He was supposed to go to Harvard Law after graduation and make bank as the future heir as planned by his parents. However, fate had other plans. Once he joined the university’s music club, he got to meet many other musicians, and slowly, his future Sadistic Parasites bandmates. First, it was Minseok in his sophomore year, then Kenji in his junior year, and then Matthew in his senior year. Hào noticed that the three stood out the most in the music club, so he invited them to form an actual professional band together in the last few months of college. They all agreed.

Hào’s parents, on the other hand, had a different reaction. They believed that an artist’s career was short-lived, that it was stupid. They believed that their son would be stuck playing at underground bars for the rest of his life. For a while, it really was true. Sadistic Parasites—a name that he had drunkenly made up with his bandmates one night—was only receiving gigs from small bars and clubs. Then, a huge record label noticed them, and they immediately signed the contract. Now, Sadistic Parasites is considered the heartthrobs of the industry for the members’ good looks and genuine talents.

While his parents approved of Hào’s success, they would convince him that getting that law degree was still possible. In spite of that, he didn’t care. He knew how he wanted to steer the wheel of his life, and it wasn’t to the courthouse.

• Xià Jiànhuá (建华) [ father ]: A wealthy businessman who moved to the United States to break into the western market after achieving success in China. He came from generational wealth and showered his son with money. Since he went to a prestigious international school and studied in the US for his undergraduate degree, he didn’t have a hard time adapting to using English and living in a foreign country. He feels like Hàoyǔ took the wrong path and should’ve gone to Harvard and later take over his company.
• Lǐ (李) Xiùlán (秀兰) [ mother ]: A housewife who also came from a wealthy family. It was an arranged marriage to strengthen ties between her parents’ company and her husband’s parents’ company back then. While she and her husband are on good terms, they don’t particularly love each other. They are still married, but it is part of Chinese culture for women to keep their maiden names. She was the one who took care of Hàoyǔ and signed him up for multiple lessons, including guitar lessons. While she spoiled her son rotten, she never spent much time actually parenting, hence why he turned out like this. Sometimes she blames herself for signing him up for those guitar lessons in the first place. While she is proud of his success, she wishes he had taken the path that she and her husband had chosen for him.

Since Hào was a senior when Matthew became a freshman, they weren’t close at first, but their time in the band has made them grow close and come to develop a brotherly relationship. Hào obviously admires Matthew’s bass guitar skills a lot since he was the one who selected the band members.
• Kenji Tanaka [friend, bandmate]: He is the drummer of Sadistic Parasites. They are called the fuckboys duo since Kenji is considered the hottest one in the group, and he acts cocky and confident as hell, while Hào is a basic fuckboy who flirts with everyone and gets defended for everything he does simply for being hot. Kenji and Hào are the most popular when it comes to their looks. As for their actual relationship, they are close and compatible and often go out drinking together. • Sadistic Parasites was formed five years ago by Hàoyǔ himself, the oldest member of the band.
