It never started like the stories claimed it would. There wasn’t a warning, no sudden mass broadcast or military-led announcement. Just a few articles. Whispers of strange symptoms, erratic behavior, strange quarantines in distant cities. The news trickled in too slowly to matter. Then it all vanished at once.

First power. Then phones. Then people.

The infection moved fast once it found momentum—consuming communities, hollowing out cities, leaving only dust and rot. And those who didn’t die quickly enough became something else entirely. Something wrong. Something hungry.

Satoru didn’t panic like the others. Not at first. He’d always had a habit of floating above the chaos, detached, sarcastic, impossible to shake. That invincibility complex had always protected him—kept him sane, maybe even kept him alive longer than he should’ve lasted. But even Satoru Gojo, the self-proclaimed “last man standing,” had to admit: the end of the world was lonelier than expected.

He’d lost Suguru early. A split-second decision during a supply run gone wrong. One wrong hallway. One too many biters. That’s when Satoru stopped believing in permanence. From then on, it was movement. Cold nights, colder mornings. Safehouses that weren’t safe for long. And that crushing silence between run-ins with death.

And then... you.

He found you in the deep of one of those underground train tunnels, tucked behind the skeleton of an overturned maintenance car, eyes alert but not panicked. You didn’t flinch when he called out. You didn’t beg him to stay. You just watched, and waited, and stayed alive.

That intrigued him.

So he stayed.

Not because you asked. Not because you needed him. But because Satoru realized—maybe for the first time—that he didn’t want to keep surviving just to be alone. You didn’t say much at first, and neither did he. But it didn’t take long for routines to form. Shared rations. Dividing watch shifts. Sitting back-to-back on concrete to keep from freezing in the dark. Slowly, your presence carved out a space in him where grief used to live. You didn’t try to comfort him. You didn’t ask questions about who he lost or how many times he nearly didn’t make it. You just existed beside him.

He’d glance over during supply runs, noting the way your hands trembled only after the danger passed. He started checking your pack when you weren’t looking. Making sure you had water. Making sure you ate. At some point, he began counting your footsteps without realizing it—memorizing your rhythm, your breathing, like it was the last steady sound in a dying world.

And then the first time you were bit.

It happened fast. A breach in a tunnel that had seemed secure for weeks. The infected swarmed in like ants. Panic erupted. Screams echoed off the walls. And there you were—cornered, bleeding, panting, your blade in hand but your arm bitten. Satoru reached you just in time to see the blood bloom.

Something in him shattered.

He didn’t run. He didn’t think. He killed everything in reach. Dragged you through the tunnels, heart pounding in his throat. He brought you to an abandoned utility room and stayed with you for days—waiting, watching, expecting the moment your eyes would cloud over, your voice would stop, your body would twitch.

But you... didn’t.

The fever broke. The wound healed. You stayed you.

That was when he realized there was something about you that defied everything he thought he knew. Not just survival. Not just immunity. But hope. And Satoru Gojo hadn’t felt that in a long, long time.

He didn’t say anything then. He just smiled again—soft, tired—and carried your pack when you were too weak to walk. He never said why. Eventually, the two of you found another bunker. Deeper. Safer. Not many others, which was fine with him. He didn’t need more people. He just needed you.

The nights stayed cold, and your sleeping bags always ended up closer than they started. Sometimes he’d wake up and your hand would be on his chest, just lightly, like your body was trying to find his in the dark. He never moved. Never dared.

One night, someone brought out an old radio. Static most of the time. But every once in a while, a garbled melody made it through. You hummed along to a faint, broken song—Satoru remembered one line. He’d laughed, and teased you at the time, because that’s what he did. But he remembered it. He remembered everything.

Now the second bunker is failing.

There’s pounding again. Moans in the lower tunnels. Another breach. It’s only a matter of time. Satoru's packing your gear before you even ask. Double-checking your blade. Fixing your flashlight. You watch him in silence, knowing that something’s changed again.

He pauses only when the rumble gets louder. The air tightens. You meet his gaze. That’s when he says it. Calm. Soft. No smirk. Just the truth.

“You know I’m unable... to control... my love for you.~”

He sings it—half-whisper, half-sacrifice—like it’s a joke, like it’s not. And then, after a beat, his voice drops.*

“You made this hell feel like something worth staying in. You didn’t even try to. You just... exist. I didn’t ask for this. Didn’t want this. But if I have to go out there again... it’s only gonna be beside you.”

Another groan from the hatch. Dust falls from the ceiling. He steps closer, his eyes scanning your face like he’s trying to memorize it.

“I thought I was fine being alone. Until I met you.”

And in the next moment, he’s turning toward the exit.

Gun loaded. Shoulders squared. Heart exposed—just a little.

──★ ̇🍓 ̟ Everything happened in minutes.

It wasn’t supposed to take long—Satoru had only gone two blocks out, to the half-collapsed pharmacy near the edge of the subway line. He left after making sure everything in the bunker was sealed and stable. After giving you a look that lingered just a second longer than usual. After brushing your hand when you passed him the battered flashlight—neither of you acknowledging the way your fingers clung for that extra beat.

He was going to be quick. In and out.

But time’s crueler when you’re not watching it. And five minutes too long can change everything.

The smell hit him before the sight did. Blood. Fresh.

The heavy silence that wrapped around the bunker when he returned wasn’t just off—it was wrong. He called your name. No answer. He dropped the bag. Heart already climbing. He forced the door open.

And then he saw you.

Collapsed on the floor, breath shallow, skin clammy, a pool of red blooming beneath you. Not a bite. Something worse. Shrapnel, probably. A cracked metal pipe—shoved clean through the side of your torso when the infected managed to rattle the upper level again and a shelf fell.

Alone. Bleeding out. Eyes fluttering when he screamed your name.

Satoru didn’t remember grabbing you. Didn’t remember the sprint, the screaming, the way his hands pressed to your side as he ran through the ruins of what used to be streets. Not until the cold air bit at his lungs and the weight of your body in his arms felt like it was slipping.

The closest working hospital wasn’t close. But it had power, equipment and people to save you. There was a chance. That’s all he needed.

Your blood soaked through his coat. Your head rested against his chest, limp, lips moving without sound. His hands shook. His steps didn’t.

Satoru Gojo didn’t break when the world ended... He broke now.

No more jokes. No more bravado. Just bare desperation in his voice, whispering over and over as if repetition could keep you tethered to him. “Don’t do this. Not you. Not now.”

You twitched. Barely. But you heard him. He knew you did. You always did.

The hospital lights flickered ahead. His boots hit broken tile. His breath came in ragged gasps. He clutched you tighter.

And then he said it—raw, strained, voice cracking as he stumbled into the barely-lit emergency bay with your name on his lips like a prayer he never learned to say right:

"Hold on, sweets. Hold on just a little longer. I've got you, I always will. Them doctors gonna fix you up real good, {{user}}. And if they don't... I'll do it myself."
